San Antonio nonprofit builds accessible playground, outdoor space for hard-of-hearing kids
October 27, 2023 | Source:KSAT
Emma Faye Rudkin said the new playground at her nonprofit, Aid the Silent, has no simple design. “We designed it where it has limited static electricity,” Rudkin said. “When I was growing up, I always felt lonely on the playground. That’s where I felt like I couldn’t belong or understand. I played by myself a lot.” Aid the Silent is a San Antonio nonprofit that advocates and supports the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Rudkin said she first started the organization when she was 18, but she had longed for a sense of belonging since the age of 3 when she went profoundly deaf…
Women from across Maryland’s Eastern Shore came together to give the gift of accessibility
October 27, 2023 | Source:WMDT
What started as a mission for better mobility turned into something bigger than just that. Women from across Maryland’s Eastern Shore came to Princess Anne, to give a resident the gift of accessibility. “Chesapeake housing is a nonprofit, faith-based organization, that builds wheelchair ramps, for those critically in need,” executive director of Chesapeake Housing Mission, Lachelle Scarlato, said. The idea is for women to support other women. Scarlato said for the volunteers, they’re simply doing a good deed. But to the people they serve, the new addition to their homes makes a world of a difference…

The Cost of Being Disabled in New York City Housing
October 31, 2023 | Source:The New York Times
As a wheelchair user, I have always had to pay a premium to live in an apartment independently. In my nine years living in New York City, I have spent more than $18,500 on automatic door openers, amenities just to make the places I’ve lived in accessible. I shouldn’t have had to do this; in almost every case, it was legally the landlord’s responsibility, experts have told me. But in the early years, I didn’t know better, and more recently, my landlords have refused to pay. I was worried that I would lose the apartment if I put up a fuss…
‘I can finally vote by myself’: Disability advocate works to improve accessibility at the polls
October 31, 2023 | Source:The Lakeshore
Since she turned 18, Miranda Grunwell has voted in every election for the past 22 years. But it hasn’t been easy because of a severe learning disability. “I can’t read well on my own, and so a ballot was hard to read,” Grunwell says. Early on, she was assisted by her mother, and then her college roommate. But she soon wanted to do it independently. Fortunately, a ballot marking device called AutoMark was introduced in 2003. Voters could use the device to mark their ballot through the use of a large-font touch screen, braille keypad and audio headset, or with the aid of their own personal sip/puff device or foot pedal…

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, making it the seventh leading cause of death globally. While myriad factors, including genetics and environment, can cause dementia, it can also present as a result of certain lifestyle choices and general health. Some involve making big changes, but consistent, more minor shifts can be helpful, too, according to Jessica Caldwell, director of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement Prevention Center at Cleveland Clinic…

Former NYC deputy mayor raises millions for ALS research while facing his own mortality
November 1, 2023 | Source:PBS
The High Line was an abandoned freight line. That sat dormant for decades before the city’s former deputy mayor, Dan Doctoroff, led a project to transform the area into a six-acre park and green space. It is one of the hundreds of projects across New York that bears Doctoroff’s fingerprints, from the Hudson Yards neighborhood, to the new Yankee Stadium, and the World Trade Center. I have always been a pretty good juggler, doing multiple things at the same time…
Advocates demanded $1.25 billion to make NYC schools more accessible. They got $800 million
November 1, 2023 | Source:Chalkbeat New York
New York City plans to spend $800 million over the next five years to boost school building accessibility for people with physical disabilities, officials revealed Wednesday. That figure is far short of what advocates had demanded. Fewer than 1 in 3 of the city’s public schools are fully accessible to students and staff with mobility impairments, according to a recent report from the group Advocates for Children. The organization previously called on the city to dramatically ramp up spending to $1.25 billion to ensure that at least half of buildings would become fully accessible over the term of the new capital plan, which runs from 2025 through 2029…

Just 29% of New York City Subway and Staten Island Railway stations are accessible via elevators, according to the report released by the Public Advocate on Wednesday. The MTA has significantly picked up the pace of accessibility work at subway stations in recent years, but New York remains a laggard compared to many of its peer cities in the United States and around the world…
Beyond Barriers: the man making luxury hotels wheelchair-accessible
November 1, 2023 | Source:CN Traveller
In the world of Disability, each life story – and each impairment – is as unique and individual as a fingerprint. Yet, within our diverse intersectional community, smaller groups who share more than just a common identity exist. Take, for instance, the community of wheelchair users and, within us, the group to whom I belong: the spinal cord injured. When individuals within specific subsets get the chance to connect, all small talk instantly goes out the window. You get straight to the heart of the matter, especially when you speak of parallels in both the cause and effect of your Disability…

‘Get comfortable with failure’: How the industry can tackle accessibility
October 30, 2023 | Source:Mumbrella- Australia
Diversity and inclusion is an ongoing conversation in this industry, but according to Guide Dogs NSW CMO, Michael Apte, there is work to be done when it comes to accessibility. The question of accessibility is broad, and understandably intimidating for much of the media and marketing industry who bare no real lived experience when it comes to disability. However, Apte feels it’s an issue that doesn’t need to be hard, at least not when it comes to access of Australians with low vision and blindness – a group set to reach more than one million by 2030, according to 2020 Vision Australia…

Officials say funding a barrier to accessibility in Cape Breton Regional Municipality
October 30, 2023 | Source:CBC- Canada
Funding is one of the main barriers to accessibility in Cape Breton Regional Municipality and it’s creating an uphill battle for the municipality to meet the Nova Scotia government’s goal of having all municipalities fully accessible by 2030, officials say. Last week, CBRM adopted a plan to reach that goal. Coun. Cyril MacDonald, who chaired the municipality’s now-expired accessibility committee, said the plan is a good first step, but figuring out what can be done will start in earnest next spring during planning talks for the new fiscal year that starts in May…
