From the metro stop at Place d’Italie, the 2km journey should take around 15 minutes on metro line 6. But for Mabilly, who is in his 50s, it will take around 40 minutes – a wheelchair user, there is no way for him to navigate the maze of stairs at his nearest metro station. “Paris is like an obstacle course for people with reduced mobility,” said Mabilly, vice-president of the APF France handicap association…

Disability Progress Is Real, But So Is Intense Ableism
August 25, 2023 | Source: Forbes
Every July, during Disability Pride Month, disabled people and disability communities struggle with the same fundamental question. Are things really a lot better now for disabled people than they were 50 years ago? Or, is ableism just as bad now, or even worse than in the old days? At times it can be a hotly debated question among people with disabilities. And it implies two other related questions. First, is the conventional wisdom about inevitable progress and the power of positive education to change attitudes about disability correct?…

The money will also be used to perform a “monument audit” of statues that were toppled or preemptively removed during protests in 2020…

The baby, from Fayetteville, North Carolina, has atresia, which is the absence or underdevelopment of the ear canal and middle ear structures. She also has microtia, which is normally accompanied by atresia — meaning an ear deformity from birth which causes the ears to appear different, according to Texas Children’s Hospital, according to SWNS…
Bathroom Access Crucial for Workers with Disabilities
August 25, 2023 | Source: SHRM
Employees with disabilities sometimes struggle to use bathrooms at the workplace, even if the bathroom meets Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Common complaints about workplace bathrooms include stalls that are too small or narrow to allow a wheelchair to turn around, counters and sinks that are too high, missing grab bars, and toilet paper and flush handles being out of reach, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The ADA requires a workplace to have accessible bathrooms if it is open to the public, such as restaurants, hotels and doctor’s offices…

Just married and 28 years old, Deming loved going to the beach in Pensacola, Florida, where she’d moved for college. But after the accident left her a quadriplegic, she found herself relying on her husband to carry her to the water. “It was so humiliating, I said I would never go back,” she says. It took a few years, but she did go back—in a special wheelchair her husband Mike Deming designed for her using balloon-like tires that can easily roll on the sand…
An alt text guide to ensure everyone can enjoy your memes
August 26, 2023 | Source: Mashable
The meme economy rarely falters, and as the impetus for much of our social posting, memes have become the common vernacular and social currency of generations of users. But a huge portion of those digital consumers are frequently left out of the loop, the product of failed website accessibility, user error, or even misinformation. Meme inaccessibility isn’t simply a technological or communicative gap: “Barriers to participating in meme culture can also directly affect social lives,” TIME reported in a 2020 story with researchers from Carnegie Mellon University…

August 28, 2023 | Source: Government Technology

The pandemic accelerated the shift from print-based learning to digital content, necessitating the creation of accessible learning materials for students who have visual, hearing, motor and cognitive impairments, according to a September 2022 report from Codemantra…

By 6:40 a.m., just in case she was wrong, she made sure her 12-year-old son, Henry, who attends a school for children and young adults with intellectual disabilities, was dressed and ready. By 6:52, a.m., to her surprise, she watched a bus pull in front of the family’s D.C. home. In that moment, it seemed, her worry had been unwarranted. Disabled fans decry no-show accessible festival toilets
August 26, 2023 | Source: BBC- UK
What’s on your UK summer festival season checklist? Probably a mix of top bands, warm hazy days with friends and answered prayers for at least a little sun (as well as a sturdy tent). But for many disabled festival-goers, simply knowing whether they’ll be able to access the toilet can often top the bill before any headline act. Festivals have long included accessible portaloos by disabled viewing platforms as part of “reasonable adjustment” provisions under equality law…
