AITN Quote of the Week
“I see one-third of a nation ill-housed, ill-clad, ill-nourished. The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.” ― Franklin Delano Roosevelt

October 4, 2024 | Source: Department of Justice and WEAU and Democracy Docket
The Justice Department announced today that a federal court in the Western District of Wisconsin has entered a preliminary injunction requiring the Town of Thornapple, Wisconsin, to comply with federal law by offering an accessible voting system at each of its polling places during the Nov. 5 federal general election. “This preliminary injunction affirms the right of voters with disabilities to participate on the same terms as every other voter,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division…
Voter accessibility at forefront of U.S. Sen. Brown visit in Mansfield
October 6, 2024 | Source: Richland Source
With the general election less than a month away, many Ohio voters might be feeling a bit of election information fatigue as candidates ramp up their campaigns. However, for a certain population of voters, it is difficult to access vital campaign information at all. Ohioans with visual or hearing impairments are often overlooked in the political process due to a lack of resources — a topic discussed with U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) during a campaign visit to Mansfield on Sunday morning…
How accessible are Pennsylvania’s elections?
October 7, 2024 | Source: Spotlight PA
State and federal laws protect your right to cast a ballot regardless of race, ethnicity, language, or disability. However, voting access in Pennsylvania isn’t always equal. Voters here do not have equal opportunities to correct mail ballots if they make a technical mistake like forgetting to date the return envelope. At least 16 counties do not give voters a chance to “cure” their mail ballots, a recent analysis by the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania found. Spotlight PA and Votebeat found similar disparities last year…
How the Biden-Harris Administration Is Ensuring Voting Accessibility
October 9, 2024 | Source: Center for American Progress
Disabled Americans continue to experience barriers to the ballot box. These barriers can include polling places that are not physically accessible, failure of polling locations to provide auxiliary aids and services for individuals with vision or hearing loss, lack of accessible voting machines and staff trained in the use of such machines, and more. The good news is that during the last presidential election, in 2020, disabled people participated in record numbers. Nearly 62 percent of disabled voters participated in 2020 compared with nearly 56 percent in 2016…

This disabled woman built a career. A federal program that helped now penalizes her
October 2, 2024 | Source: NPR
Tabi Haly defies expectations. She’s a woman with a progressive muscular illness; she can’t move her body and she needs round-the-clock care from aides. She wasn’t expected to go to college, or to get a job — much less become a vice president at the banking giant JPMorgan Chase. Even staying alive and healthy defied expectations. “People with spinal muscular atrophy like myself, living to my age already is a huge win,” says Haly, who is 40…
When will the U.S. enact negotiated rulemaking for accessible IFE?
October 5, 2024 | Source: Runway Girl
Several airlines including Delta are leading the charge to bring accessible IFE to passengers — of their own volition. Outside of industry’s voluntary efforts, however, U.S. regulations governing adoption have largely languished. But why? In 2016, after industry and disability advocates convened as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s so-called ACCESS Advisory Committee, a rare agreement between both sides led to proposed regulations governing accessible IFE…

October 6, 2024 | Source: Greenwich Time
The updated Americans with Disabilities Act transition plan for Greenwich schools now says it will cost more than $44 million to make most of the district’s buildings ADA compliant. The ADA study, which was conducted by Silver Petrucelli and Associates, leaves out three of the district’s 15 schools including both Old Greenwich School and Central Middle School since they will become ADA compliant when their building projects are completed and New Lebanon School, which was built in 2019…
Feds investigate accessibility at Darien’s Ox Ridge School
October 6, 2024 | Source: Stamford Advocate
When Kate Haavik’s son was in kindergarten last school year, she started biking him to Ox Ridge Elementary School every day. By the end of the school year, he was able to ride a bike on his own, alongside her, but the commute to school didn’t come easily. Around November 2023, Haavik said she noticed the curbs at the intersection approaching the school didn’t have cuts. She was able to get over the humps, but her son, now a first grader, couldn’t…
Universal Modifies Disability Access At Theme Parks
October 7, 2024 | Source: Disability Scoop
Some of the nation’s most popular theme parks are quietly making changes to their procedures for accommodating visitors with disabilities. Universal recently stopped requiring visitors to get advance approval from a third party to access accommodations at parks in Florida and California. Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood offer individuals with disabilities who have difficulty waiting in lines the opportunity to schedule a return time for one ride at a time so that they can check out other areas of the park while they wait if they qualify for an Attractions Assistance Pass…

Accessible Aroostook: mother speaks on impact of inaccessibility
October 8, 2024 | Source: WAGM
Not every disability looks the same, and not every disability is visible. Regardless of a person’s age or abilities, they have a right to access community spaces. “We’ve only been in this for three years but we’ve run into a lot of issues with accessibility in the county, says Christina Dolan, a mother currently living in Van Buren. Dolan is a parent of four – including a three-year-old with cerebral palsy. “One of the twins – Matthew – he had a known heart condition but when he was born we ultimately ended up finding out he had a brain injury from birth, and that led to him having cerebral palsy,” Dolan tells WAGM…

LA Fitness is the largest chain of owner-operated gym and fitness clubs in the United States, with nearly 700 locations across the country. October 8, 2024 | Source: NPR and The New York Times and The Hill and HHS
Vice President Harris on Tuesday laid out a proposal to expand Medicare coverage to help cover the costs of home health care aides for seniors. Harris announced the plan — squarely aimed at “sandwich generation” women who take care of aging parents as well as their own kids — on ABC’s The View, a daytime television talk show popular with middle-aged and older women. “There are so many people in our country who are right in the middle. They’re taking care of their kids and they’re taking care of their aging parents, and it’s just almost impossible to do it all, especially if they work,” Harris said…

Accessible Aroostook: service and assistance animals in housing
October 9, 2024 | Source: WAGM
In 2016 the State of Maine made a distinction between service and assistance animals due to common confusion. As per state definition, a service animal must be a dog that is trained to work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability. These dogs are allowed in any place that’s open to the public. Differently, an assistance animal can be any kind of animal that helps mitigate the effects of a disability. They may also be known as “emotional support”, “therapy” or “companion” animals…

Julie Helen: ‘It is difficult to describe the dread I feel around wheelchair accessibility in new places’
October 5, 2024 | Source: The Echo- Ireland
Ricky got called for a hearing test by the HSE after I highlighted a family history of deafness over a year ago at one of his last developmental checks. I had noticed that sometimes he wouldn’t answer me if he was watching a screen. Of course, it could have been that he was purely distracted, but I figured that these standard checks are there for a reason and I’ll always do what I believe is best as a mum. Anyway, I forgot about it all and we got on with our lives till the appointment came in the door…
Why using ‘accessible’ washrooms leave me full of embarrassment, light on dignity
October 6, 2024 | Source: CBC- Canada
Going to the washroom is something that I cannot take for granted. There’s a lot that goes into the process. Because I have a physical disability, going out in public comes with a lot of different thoughts. Wide doors and a little extra personal space should be given to the areas that are supposed to be wheelchair accessible. While out and about, I have to use the washroom. After manoeuvring my way down to the washroom area, my helper and I reach the entrance and are faced with a moral dilemma: which washroom do we go into?…

He attributes these issues to a lack of effort to create an inclusive city…
NSW digital strategy targets accessibility and legacy bugbears
October 7, 2024 | Source: The Mandarin- UK
One of the big traps for almost all first-term governments that follow on from major reforms and renewals is being seen to be tinkering or up-ending widely popular services and programs just for the sake of politics. When it comes to New South Wales, the two big standouts for Premier Chris Minns in this regard are Transport for NSW and Service NSW — including the latter’s parent department, Customer Service and Digital, which is in charge of the state’s famed app, its digital driver’s licence, and its intuitive online transactions and interfaces…
