Accessibility in the News — 1/19/2024.
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness and emphasis on creating an inclusive society that accommodates the diverse needs of all individuals. One significant aspect of this inclusivity is the establishment of businesses that cater specifically to people with disabilities. These enterprises not only provide valuable products and services but also play a crucial role in fostering a more accessible and equitable economic landscape.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 16% of the global population lives with some form of disability. Despite the significant number of people with disabilities worldwide, there has historically been a lack of attention given to their specific needs in the business world. However, the tide is turning, and an increasing number of entrepreneurs and organizations are recognizing the potential of businesses tailored to this demographic.
Businesses catering to people with disabilities not only address the unique needs of this market but also create employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. These enterprises often prioritize hiring individuals with diverse abilities, offering a supportive and inclusive work environment that values each employee’s contributions. By doing so, these businesses contribute to reducing unemployment rates among people with disabilities and breaking down societal barriers.

Don’t laugh: boomers still rule the world – for now
January 14, 2024 | Source: The Guardian
I still pay for cable TV, print out plane tickets, read the newspaper and watch Jeopardy. Yes, I like wallpaper in a bathroom and shag carpet in a bedroom. Yes, I use emojis too much. I leave too many voicemails. I know these are the things that boomers do and I know that younger people find them hilarious. Please don’t ridicule me, it’ll be your turn one day. Technically, I’m not a boomer. I was born in 1965, one year past the official deadline…

A modern era of wheelchair-accessible time travel is finally here
January 12, 2024 | Source: SMA Today
When rumors began circulating years ago that a certain blue police box time machine might be getting an accessible makeover, my interest was more than piqued. Would a ramp truly be added to the TARDIS when the British sci-fi show “Doctor Who” returned to the air late last year for three 60th anniversary special episodes? That would mean people like me with SMA and other disabilities could become The Doctor’s companions…

Prioritizing rights — Challenging the case for delayed ADA compliance
January 12, 2024 | Source: San Jose Spotlight
In a recent op-ed by San Jose Downtown Association CEO Alex Stettinski, he expressed concerns about the impact of Americans with Disabilities Act-related lawsuits on small businesses. He advocated for a “time to fix” period, as proposed in Senate Bill 585. Recognizing the challenges faced by small businesses, it is vital to check the wisdom of extending Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance timelines. This is especially important given the legislation’s extensive history…

Kim Kirkwood-Boulter will get to take her two sons to the Columbus Arts Festival for the first time this year, thanks to a partnership the festival has with the state of Ohio. Her whole family has often stayed home rather than risk having to leave after a few hours or change her 10-year-old son Aiden — who has developmental disabilities that necessitate protective undergarments — in an undignified setting. But planned additions for the 2024 festival, which runs June 7-9, include a mobile adaptive restroom with an adult-sized changing table, picnic tables that can accommodate wheelchairs, a cooling tent and wheelchair charging stations…

Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said constituents have reached out to their offices with concerns that the agency’s service animal form is “poorly designed and needlessly difficult to complete.”…

Building a barrier-free environment for PWDs
January 11, 2024 | Source: Manila Bulletin- Philippines
How can we create a barrier-free environment? One that is accessible to anyone, regardless of age, ability or other mobility factors. Oftentimes, a place is seen as accessible to persons with disabilities (PWD) when there is presence of ramps, handrails, and elevators. But there are many other ways, and a lot of other factors to consider in order to make a place barrier-free. It is not as easy as putting solutions on existing infrastructure, because in the first place, the needs of PWDs must already be considered in planning our infrastructure, buildings, and overall urban design…

Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
