Under Trump, WhiteHouse.gov was a disaster. Biden’s team revamped it in 6 weeks
January 25, 2021 | Source: Fast Company
For a glimpse of how the Biden Administration plans to govern, look no further than the White House website. The new site has lots of negative white space and is designed to be accessible to everyone from Spanish speakers to citizens with vision impairments. “WhiteHouse.gov ends up being the front page of the federal government,” says White House director of digital strategy Rob Flaherty, whose team would like users to consider WhiteHouse.gov a digital front door…

Biden’s new sign language interpreter runs a right-wing Facebook group and has been pictured in a MAGA hat
January 28, 2021 | Source: Yahoo & Time
The Biden administration announced this week that it would include an American Sign Language interpreter in its daily press briefings, a step that the previous administration avoided taking until a court ordered it to do so late last year. The move is a “historical first,” according to Howard A. Rosenblum, the chief executive officer of the National Association of the Deaf. Past administrations have occasionally had A.S.L. briefers at some White House events and meetings, Mr. Rosenblum said, but President Biden is the first to make it a fixture…

Sallows, the owner of Baka’s Barber Shop inside of the WPAL Fitness Center in downtown DuBois, has designed a wheelchair accessible barber chair/apparatus, which was brought to fruition by UPMC’s rehabilitation science and technology team of engineers. They have developed the device that will help individuals with physical disabilities have a more tailored, comfortable, and safe experience at the salon…
COVID-19 pandemic boosts visibility of sign language, increases accessibility for deaf community
January 23, 2021 | Source: WBIR.com
The COVID-19 pandemic changed daily life for people across the world. With new safety guidelines requiring people to wear masks and practice social distancing and companies changing how they do business, people are having to adapt. However, some of those changes could increase accessibility for the deaf community in Tennessee. As a result of more events being held virtually, officials said that sign language’s visibility has increased. Sign language interpreters are featured during important announcements about the coronavirus, and during major events like the Inauguration of President Biden…
Black, Deaf and Extremely Online
January 23, 2021 | Source: New York Times
“I have to make sure my hands are not ashy before I sign,” Nakia Smith, who is deaf, explained to her nearly 400,000 followers. In one of the dozens of popular videos she posted to TikTok last year, Ms. Smith compared her habit of adding a quick dab of lotion to her hands before she starts signing to the sip of water a hearing person takes before beginning to speak. Since Ms. Smith created her account last April, the small ritual has caught millions of eyes, drawing attention to a corner of the internet steeped in the history and practice of a language that some scholars say is too frequently overlooked: Black American Sign Language, or BASL…
How All Wheels Up Is Working To Make Airplanes More Wheelchair Accessible
January 24, 2021 | Source: Travel Awaits
For people with disabilities, air travel can be inconvenient and difficult at best — and sometimes impossible. All Wheels Up — a disability advocacy group that works directly with the Federal Aviation Administration, Congress, and other air travel organizations — is working to make air travel a little easier for those with disabilities by giving away CARES harnesses and ADAPTS slings through its new Fly Safe Today program. “Keys to a safe flight for a person with a disability are a protected transfer and a secure positioning,” said Michele Erwin, founder and president of All Wheels Up…
ProPublica Uses Plain Language to Make Stories More Accessible
January 25, 2021 | Source: Editor And Publisher Magazine
It’s nice when a newsroom experiment pays off in unexpected ways. In Arizona, ProPublica teamed up with the Arizona Daily Star to sponsor a story by Amy Silverman that looked into why the state’s Division of Developmental Disabilities turned down thousands of people who sought assistance. The investigative piece has all the heft and rigor you’d expect from a ProPublica deep dive. But what could have simply ended as a robust and impactful piece of journalism transformed into something of an experiment in story forms (20 separate urls in total, including Spanish translations and audio versions)…

Through its Accessibility and Inclusion Lab, the organization is holding a virtual conversation series from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1 focusing on the intersection of filmmaking and disability-related topics. Panelists will include Troy Kotsur, Cheryl Bedford, Ashley Eakin and CJ Jones and each of the five conversation series will include ASL interpreters along with live captions…
Union Square Curves Add Accessibility Challenge to $100M Makeover
January 25, 2021 | Source: The City
A proposed $100 million overhaul of Union Square lays out a blueprint for making one of the city’s best-known public spaces more pedestrian friendly. But the new “Vision Plan” from the nonprofit organization that helps to beautify the city-owned green space also points to the limitations of making the sprawling subway complex beneath the park more accessible to riders with disabilities. The platforms along the 4, 5 and 6 lines at the 14th Street-Union Square station lack elevators, and a MTA-commissioned study last year made it seem the stop would never be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act…
Students Win In Federal Appeals Court – With Argument Partly Via Sign Language
January 25, 2021 | Source: UVA Today
A University of Virginia School of Law student using American Sign Language and her classmate successfully argued on behalf of a client before a Richmond-based federal appeals court. Appellate Litigation Clinic third-year law students Jehanne McCullough, who is Deaf, and Nina Oat presented oral argument virtually with interpreter Kate O’Regan before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit on Sept. 9. The court ruled in favor of their client Jan. 4. But in simply making her arguments the way she did, McCullough might have set a new milestone…
Tesla Win Over Wheelchair-Accessible ADA Suit Upheld on Appeal
January 25, 2021 | Source: Bloomberg Law
Tesla Inc. defeated claims it discriminated against a quadriplegic man by failing to make accommodations in its Sherman Oaks, Calif., showroom after the Ninth Circuit ruled Monday that the complaint was devoid of factual allegations. Brian Whitaker’s Americans With Disabilities Act claim fails because he merely recited legal conclusions, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said. The complaint alleged that Tesla “failed to provide accessible service counters,” that Whitaker “personally encountered” the inaccessible service counters, and that he was denied “full and equal access.”…
Behavioral Challenges Can Push Youth With Disabilities Into School-to-Prison Pipeline
January 25, 2021 | Source: Juvenile Justice Information Exchange
Who are youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)? The population of youth with IDD is vast. In 2018-19, the number of students ages 3–21 who received special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was 7.1 million or 14% of all public school students. You may know some better-known IDDs such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, to name a few…
After years of battling, Florida glass-bottom boat attraction will become wheelchair accessible
January 26, 2021 | Source: Florida Insider
One of Florida’s coolest nature attractions will soon be wheelchair accessible, granting access to one of Florida’s largest disabled travel demographics. Once only accessible for non-disabled patrons, the Silver Springs glass-bottom boat tours are in the process of launching a boat with a flat deck and proper aisle space for convenient wheelchair access. “They won’t have to separate from a boyfriend, husband, sister or family, which often happens to people with disabilities,” Florida State Parks Foundation volunteer Paula Russo said…
Gov. Abbott explains plan to make COVID vaccine accessible for residents with disabilities
January 26, 2021 | Source: FOX 29
Our station has been getting a number of complaints from some of your neighbors with disabilities. They tell us it’s too difficult to make it to one of the mass vaccination sites in Bexar County so it would be much easier to just go to their local pharmacy. So we went straight to Governor Greg Abbott to find out when your local pharmacy will be able to get you the COVID-19 vaccine. We asked if these mega sites were having people get vaccinated here in San Antonio there are a number of disabled people that have great difficulty getting there…
A Hashtag Invites Disabled People To Claim Their Disabilities With Pride
January 26, 2021 | Source: Forbes
In November 2020, disabled activists Karli Drew and Charis Hill started a new Twitter hashtag for and about disabled people: #BeingDisabledDoesDefineMe. Essentially, the hashtag’s creators meant it to invite disabled people to express the seemingly counterintuitive opposite of a more familiar saying about disability, one which can seem like simple common sense: “My disability doesn’t define me.” Statements like this are especially common in media stories about disabled people, in which “doesn’t let their disability define them” is shorthand for an interpretation of disability that is at the same time quite simple, yet also complex…
Website ADA Lawsuit Filed Against Golden State Warriors
January 27, 2021 | Source: Klein Moynihan Turco
The Golden State Warriors (the “Warriors”) are the latest high-profile company to have a website-related American with Disabilities Act (“ADA”) lawsuit filed against them. On January 21, 2021, a class action complaint was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, alleging that the Warriors website, https://shop.warriors.com/, violates the ADA and California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act (“UCRA”) because it is not fully accessible to blind and visually impaired consumers…
Molly Burke on the Best and Worst Beauty Packaging for Blind People
January 27, 2021 | Source: Allure Magazine
Molly Burke is well aware that there aren’t many people who can call themselves blind beauty influencers. But just because blind beauty influencers like her are few and far between on platforms like YouTube doesn’t mean there aren’t a huge number of blind beauty shoppers. And while Burke cannot speak for every blind person who shops for beauty products, she can speak to some of the general concerns, frustrations, and triumphs that come with finding products designed in such a way that elevates accessibility — and that’s exactly what she shared in a new Allure video about universal design…
As More Deaf People Are Seen on TV, Others Want to Be Heard
January 27, 2021 | Source: New York Times
While filming the reality series “Deaf U,” Rodney Burford wasn’t too focused on any effect he and his cochlear implants would have on viewers. “In my own mind I was like, ‘Yo, I’m really on Netflix,’” said the 22-year-old cast member of the show, which zooms in on a group of students at Gallaudet University, the nation’s only liberal arts university devoted to deaf people. Things changed after the show debuted last fall. Parents of cochlear-implant users started reaching out to say how seeing Burford on the screen had made an impact on their children…

Connections: Discussing the state of accessible housing for people with disabilities
January 27, 2021 | Source: WXXI News
When Erica Jones looks for a place to call home, her must-haves are non-negotiable. “Can I get through the front door? Are there steps? And can I get inside the bathroom and turn around?” she asked. Jones uses a wheelchair, so space is important. “If I can’t maneuver the bathroom, that deems the entire apartment unlivable,” she said. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 made public spaces more accessible, but many of the civil rights law’s regulations don’t apply to residential housing…
How business leaders can create true inclusion for people with disabilities
January 28, 2021 | Source: Human Resources Director
People with disabilities are some of the most under-represented individuals in the workplace. Gender is often touted as a more important priority for diversity and inclusion activity – because more than half the population is female. But people with disabilities make up the next largest group yet they are often overlooked. And even when organizations do seek to include people who are differently abled, they often start with an occupational health assessment – telling people what they already know about themselves at a cost to the business…
Marlee Matlin on Sundance opener ‘CODA’: ‘I hope it will create a tidal wave’
January 28, 2021 | Source: Los Angeles Times
Filmmaker Siân Heder tipped me off about Marlee Matlin, saying that the moment you meet her, she’ll ask 10 questions. Sure enough, when we connect via Zoom, she takes one look at the bookcases in the background and begins, asking through her sign language interpreter and confidante Jack Jason if I’ve read every book on those shelves. Noticing the Oscar in the background of her shot, I counter by asking Matlin if she frames all her video interviews just so, to spotlight the Academy Award and, yes, the Golden Globe (the Oscar’s “little cousin,” as she puts it) she won at age 21 for “Children of a Lesser God.”…

Thinking about students with disabilities in the pandemic

Now I’m also a class member…” Ayse had a genetic disorder called epidermolysis bullosa, a rare and serious skin disorder. Getting the right environment for her to do a two-year computer programming course was a challenge. The director of her vocational school and the rector of the university had to work on bureaucratic issues to solve the addition of an online individual to a formal class. Once she was the only one to get distance or hybrid education in her class…

With the help of my family, I swam in the sea for the first time in years
January 26, 2021 | Source: The Guardian- Australia
Just after Christmas, I swam in the ocean for the first time since, well, I actually can’t remember when. For most people, swimming in the sea is a rite of the Australian summer. We pad barefoot along the sand, sea breeze fanning our cheeks, with a knowing grin that it’s finally time: summertime. Feeling the glory of waves splashing and soothing our hot skin, cooling the sun’s bite. It’s a delightful homecoming. So I have found out. For many years I stared into the big blue and wondered what it’d be like to slide into the ocean…

Thanks to technology advances, healthcare services are more accessible than ever. The NHS has committed to digitally enabled care going mainstream. And during the COVID-19 pandemic more services have gone online than ever before. But are older people who don’t feel confident with the internet being left behind? Whilst older people are increasingly using the internet and owning smartphones, many still avoid online life completely or use it only on occasion. According to Ofcom, just under one in five over-75s personally use a smartphone, although they are more likely to use larger devices like tablets or computers as their main gateway to the internet…

Research from University College London (UCL) found those who live in highly polluted areas are eight percent more likely to suffer from irreversible sight loss, known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD)…
Voters perceive political candidates with a disability as qualified for elected office
January 28, 2021 | Source: Eureka Alert- UK
Worldwide, over one billion people live with a disability. Historically, they have been discriminated against and stigmatized by society. To improve their rights, they should be included in political decision-making, yet there is a lack of political representatives who are known to have a disability. This under-representation may be due to several factors, including how voters perceive a political candidate with a disability. However, a new study published in Frontiers in Political Science, found for the first time that voters do not apply negative stereotypes when evaluating candidates with a disability…
What are cataracts? How to prepare for cataract surgery?
January 28, 2021 | Source: Times Now News- India
The human eye is made up of a complex set of things which use the science of light, refraction, and nerve sensitivity – among other principles – to help us see. Inside our eyes, we have a natural lens. The lens bends or refracts light rays that come into the eye to help us see. But for us to be able to see clearly, the lens should be clear. A cataract is when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy due to any factor – be it ageing, or because the proteins in your lens break down and cause things to look blurry, hazy or less colourful…

Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
