Why does Trump hate people with disabilities so much?
August 19, 2024 | Source: The Boston Globe
Rarely a day passes without a sneering screed from Donald Trump that casts America as a land of stupid, deranged, weak, and ugly people. It’s such a tired litany that only the most absurdly vicious comments make their way into the press anymore. Most recently, it was his remark that the civilian Medal of Freedom was superior to the military’s Medal of Honor. The Medal of Freedom is “much better,” Trump said last week, than the Medal of Honor, whose recipients, who stepped in front of grenades and ran into burning buildings to save other human beings, and are now, in his words, “in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead.”…
Project 2025 Would Make Workplace Discrimination a Lot Easier
August 19, 2024 | Source: Mother Jones
Only some 40 percent of disabled people are employed. But even that low figure is buoyed by federal laws against employment discrimination—a target of Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s roadmap for a right-wing transformation of government by a second Trump White House. A key institution for the just treatment of disabled workers is the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which enforces federal bans on workplace discrimination…

A visionary approach: How a team developed accessible maps for colorblind scientists
August 16, 2024 | Source: Phys.org
Imagine having to do your job, but not being able to visually process the data right in front of you. Nearly 8% of genetic males and 0.5% of genetic females have some form of Color Vision Deficiency (CVD), or the decreased ability to discern between particular colors. CVD is commonly referred to as color blindness. Scientists use colors to convey information. Many scientists in the weather radar community have CVD and the use and interpretation of color is an important aspect of their work. Most colormaps don’t take into account those with CVD; for instance, the maps show green next to red…

As climate changes, scorching summers bring deadly heat for people with disabilities
August 16, 2024 | Source: STAT
Degree by degree, the earth’s temperature ticks up. Heat records fall as reliably as the sun sets. In July, the East Coast broiled. This week, Texas and its neighbors are feeling the burn. It’s been an absolute scorcher in the United States, the hottest summer on record. Fossil fuel-induced climate change has transformed heat from a problem into a threat. Extreme heat kills more people than all other weather-related disasters combined. People with disabilities face even higher risk of injury or death during heat waves, especially since they are more likely to have less income and no air conditioning…

OCR says Michigan seeking to ‘shield itself’ from scrutiny for Section 504 noncompliance
August 20, 2024 | Source: K-12 Dive
The Michigan Department of Education has “fundamental misunderstandings about the scope of Section 504” that raise concerns about the state’s past and future ability to comply with the disability civil rights law, said the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights in a filing this month. The accusations came in response to MDE’s motion to dismiss OCR’s findings that the state harmed students with disabilities by sending incorrect guidance to school districts about make-up services for instructional time lost during pandemic school closures…
Inclusion at the Missouri State Fair: making fun ‘accessible to all’
August 20, 2024 | Source: KBIA
It’s a hot and humid Thursday toward the end of the Missouri State Fair, and the smells of fried food and the sounds of livestock fill the air. Walking onto the carnival midway though, some things are noticeably absent – the lights on the rides are off, no loud music is playing, and the carnival game and ride operators aren’t calling out to patrons. For the second year, the fair provided “sensory friendly” carnival hours – where they turned down the intensity of the offerings…
Inside VITAC’s Role In Making The Democratic National Convention ‘The Most Accessible’ In History
August 20, 2024 | Source: Forbes
This year’s Democratic National Convention (DNC) is happening at Chicago’s United Center this week. The opening night festivities included speeches from Golden State Warriors and Team USA men’s basketball head coach Steve Kerr, Hillary Clinton, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and President Biden. I saw bits and pieces of every speech last night; as a disabled American voter, I’m keenly interested in finding out how the Harris-Walz ticket plans to support the disability community should they win the White House over Donald Trump come early November…
What anxious parents of neurodivergent children can learn from Tim and Gwen Walz
August 21, 2024 | Source: MSNBC
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s open acknowledgement that he and his wife used fertility treatments to conceive their two children and his candid discussions about that generated one of the most moving moments during a rally in Glendale, Arizona, when people chanted the name of his firstborn daughter, Hope. The positive reaction to the candidate’s discussion of the topic confirms the thumbs-up that Vice President Kamala Harris got for choosing her running mate from every faction of the Democratic Party…
Forbes says Fresno is worst place for people who use wheelchairs. How does it figure that?
August 21, 2024 | Source: Fresno Bee and KSEE/KGPE
Fresno is the least accessible city in the nation for people with mobility disabilities, according to a new study by Forbes Health. The personal health website came up a list of the best — and worst — cities for accessibility in the United States based on factors such as the percentage of wheelchair-friendly rental properties and the number of accessible restaurants and attractions. About 12.2% of adults in the United States have a mobility disability, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention…

Families sprawled across Jetty Beach in Oak Bluffs Tuesday to celebrate efforts to make Island beaches more accessible. The group issued a report early this year on its findings and held a party Tuesday to cheer the addition of beach mats, floating wheelchairs and other aids that have become fixtures at places such as Jetty Beach…
Airbus eyes cabin accessibility solutions; says industry not there yet
August 22, 2024 | Source: Runway Girl
Several aviation stakeholders are doing admirable and important work to address a glaring cabin accessibility problem: wheelchair users cannot currently remain in their own mobility devices onboard aircraft. And the threat of seeing their chair damaged in the cargo hold is all too real. But in Airbus’ view, cabin concepts that would simply accommodate one or two wheelchair users in-flight via wheelchair securement systems will not adequately address the issue…
They Tried to Evict Her Emotional Support Parrots. She Won $165,000
August 22, 2024 | Source: The New York Times
For almost 20 years, a group of parrots and their owner lived at the Rutherford, a co-op apartment building in the ritzy Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan. For almost as many years, the neighbors complained. The parrots shrieked and squawked, they said. The parrots shouted human words, but not clearly enough for the neighbors to follow their conversations. The parrots seemed to generally drive everyone mad. After years of complaints, the chorus of caws and cries became unbearable…

Guernsey mobility scooter user slams lack of improvements
August 15, 2024 | Source: BBC- UK
A mobility scooter user is calling on the States of Guernsey to speed up accessibility improvements around St Peter Port. Accountant Anna Taylor said despite new anti-discrimination legislation coming into force in October there had been little practical progress. She said it meant many islanders remained reluctant to leave their homes because they did not feel safe travelling along roads and pavements. Colin Le Page, from Traffic and Highways, said: “We fully appreciate the difference it makes to people’s lives when roads and footpaths are accessible and we will continue to make these improvements.”…

Chennai’s low-floor buses offer greater accessibility for disabled passengers, but infrastructure shortcomings at bus stops persist
August 16, 2024 | Source: The Hindu- India
Chennai’s new low-floor buses by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) are a positive step toward accessible public transportation. However, R. Sathish Kumar, a member of the Disability Rights Alliance, feels that further development is needed. Despite the progress, he emphasised that further improvements in infrastructure are necessary. “Ramps at bus stops are crucial. Without them, wheelchair users can’t even access the bus shelters. As it stands, most bus stops in Chennai lack ramps, forcing wheelchair users to wait on the carriageway, which is not only difficult but also dangerous,” he said…

Most disabled Canadians won’t qualify for national dental care plan, advocates say
August 16, 2024 | Source: CBC- Canada
Kevin Konnyu spent a decade navigating the health-care system before he was approved recently for financial assistance through Ontario’s disability support program. But even though his province recognizes his disability, that’s not enough on its own to qualify him for coverage under Canada’s new national public dental insurance program. Instead, he has to prove to Ottawa he’s disabled through several more applications. “What more proof does the government need?” he said…

Totton: Disabled access issue tackled at railway station
August 17, 2024 | Source: BBC- UK
Accessibility at a Hampshire railway station, where disabled passengers were unable to leave trains due to steps, has been improved. Previously, those traveling from Southampton to Totton had to carry on to Brockenhurst and then return to Totton to access its step-free north platform. But a new footpath, connecting the station to Totton High Street, means people using wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs can now get off on the south side.
Lulu Bowerman, Hampshire County Council’s member for highways, said it was a “much-needed scheme”…
Supreme Court’s direction on special news bulletins for the disabled is welcome, but a lot more needs to be done
August 18, 2024 | Source: Hindustan Times- India
Continued legal pressure and timely notification of accessibility standards are essential for meaningful progress in making media content accessible to all. Many Indians will remember growing up watching DD News with a portion of the screen dedicated to sign language interpretation for the benefit of the country’s hearing-impaired population. Sadly, why and how this practice stopped, nobody knows. Against this backdrop, the Supreme Court’s recent request to the additional solicitor general, Aishwarya Bhati, to take instructions from public broadcaster Prasar Bharati, as to whether a special news broadcast for persons with visual and hearing impairment can be televised is a welcome development…

Bus accessibility: Brighton and Hove and Metrobus leading the way
August 19, 2024 | Source: Route One- UK
Giving equal access for disabled customers and enabling them to feel comfortable using buses has already improved greatly, and it will advance further in October with the accessible information regulations. ‘We are expected to be dead … or hidden away’: Resident raises concerns with accessibility in downtown Peterborough
August 20, 2024 | Source: The Peterborough Examiner- Canada
As road work downtown continues to increase traffic and businesses express their concerns about the impact this work will have on their busy season heading into the end of summer and beginning of the new school year, it’s all too easy to forget that for many members of the community questions around roadwork go far beyond convenience and bottom lines. For many able-bodied people, the question of accessibility does not enter into conversations, and according to Derek Newman-Stille, an instructor and PhD candidate at Trent University specializing in disability justice, ableism and accessibility comes in both physical and what they call “attitudinal” forms…
According to the UN, Canadians with intellectual disabilities are being exploited
August 20, 2024 | Source: The Conversation- Canada
Canada was recently criticized by Tomoya Obokata, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Slavery, in relation to the shortcomings of the temporary foreign worker program. However, this was not the Special Rapporteur’s only criticism. The working conditions of persons with intellectual disabilities also drew his attention. As a researcher on issues related to the financial security and employment of persons with disabilities, and as someone who works in the field of public policy, I would like to shed some light on a controversial practice that is still widespread in Canada: sheltered work programs…

Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
