New Crosswalks Make Hell’s Kitchen More Accessible for Visually Impaired
August 2, 2024 | Source: W42ST
Walking down 9th Avenue in the past month in the West 40s, you might have noticed construction workers busy installing a series of short poles with orange buttons on them on every corner at multiple crosswalks. They are Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS), and have been installed by the Department of Transportation. DOT records show that seven crosswalks along 9th Avenue contained APS as of June. Yesterday, W42ST counted them at 15 intersections, largely in the West 40s, with many more dotted throughout the neighborhood…

The city, CHN Housing Partners and Detroit Housing Network are offering various home upgrades to ease accessibility among residents with disabilities using $6.6 million of American Rescue Plan Act funding. Improvements include the installation of ramps, lifts and grab bars; improvements to doors, thresholds and lighting, and “specialized” modifications such as adjustments for mobility devices, vision impairments and more, according to the city…

August 6, 2024 | Source: KX News
Many North Dakotans rely on public transportation as their only way of getting around, but accessibility can often feel like an overwhelming issue for those dealing with disabilities. According to the Bureau of Transportation, over 18 million disabled Americans have no access to public transportation, and Minot Public Transit bridges that gap in the community. The transit system has over eight bus routes that are all wheelchair accessible. They include ramps and chair lifts to accommodate those with walking impairments…
Wheelchair users’ wait for elevator at some CTA stations could take a while — nearly 14 years
August 8, 2024 | Source: Chicago Sun-Times
Mike Irvin uses a wheelchair to get to and from his Printers Row home, but he always gives himself more time to take public transit because his closest L stop at Harrison Street doesn’t have an elevator. He is disappointed that the Chicago Transit Authority doesn’t plan to add an elevator to that station until nearly 2038, the CTA’s own deadline for upgrading the remaining 30% of its stations that are not accessible for people with disabilities. “I was never a fan of the plan in the first place…

July 31, 2024 | Source: HuffPost
Donald Trump’s nephew Fred Trump III alleges in a new book, excerpted for Time magazine, that in a private conversation about people with disabilities who require expensive care, his uncle said, “Maybe those kinds of people should just die.” Donald Trump allegedly made a similar statement when discussing Fred Trump III’s own son, who has a KCNQ2 gene mutation that resulted in intellectual and developmental disabilities. The nephew writes that he was appalled by his uncle’s remarks and the implication that there is a whole group of people whose lives don’t matter…

August 2, 2024 | Source: Mother Jones
In 2020, Sharon Giovinazzo, who is blind as a complication of multiple sclerosis, wanted to vote independently—and in person. She knew that electronic voting machines in Little Rock, Arkansas, then her home, were her only option. Giovinazzo called an Uber to take her and her guide dog to the polls. The first three canceled on her. Giovinazzo, now CEO of LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired in San Francisco, knew that was a possibility…

August 2, 2024 | Source: Disability Scoop
Millions more workers will soon qualify for overtime pay and advocates are warning that the changes are likely to further erode the availability of developmental disability services. The U.S. Department of Labor started incrementally increasing the salary threshold at which employees are eligible for overtime pay under a new rule that took effect this summer. As of July 1, most salaried workers earning less than $43,888 qualify for overtime if they work more than 40 hours in a week…

Republicans asked the judge to not enforce his ruling while their appeal is pending. Including People With Disabilities in Data Collection
August 8, 2024 | Source: GovTech
When implementing disability-inclusive practices, governments should consider several key factors, as illustrated through a federal request for information (RFI), and in a new local data standard. Governments are focused on accessibility for numerous reasons, one being the new accessibility mandate for digital government content. However, access can and should go beyond compliance; and as artificial intelligence continues advancing, high-quality data should be the foundation…

To help this mobile population, it is critical to build supportive relationships for the families…
