Accessibility in the News- Knowledge is Power — 8/11/2023.
The U.S. Access Board has issued comprehensive accessibility guidelines for pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way, addressing the significant challenges faced by pedestrians with disabilities across the United States. These guidelines set forth essential requirements for federal, state, and local government agencies to make sidewalks, crosswalks, shared use paths, and more accessible to people with disabilities. The guidelines encompass a range of elements such as accessible pedestrian routes, signals, curb ramps, crosswalks, and street furniture, serving as a crucial step toward equitable access to transportation for individuals with disabilities. The guidelines will become mandatory upon adoption by relevant departments and agencies, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards and promoting inclusivity in pedestrian infrastructure.

August 8, 2023 | Source: U.S. Access Board
Pedestrians with disabilities throughout the United States continue to face major challenges in travel because many sidewalks, crosswalks, and other pedestrian facilities are inaccessible. These guidelines inform federal, state, and local government agencies on how to make their pedestrian facilities, such as sidewalks, crosswalks, shared use paths, and on-street parking, accessible to people with disabilities…

Accessible housing and sports for people living with disabilities
August 4, 2023 | Source: WTXL
One in three adults in Florida are living with a disability. That’s according to recent data from the Florida Department of Health. One recreational organization and a new affordable housing complex are working to create a more inclusive community for people with disabilities. David Jones had to relearn how to walk, talk and live again after a brain injury from a hunting accident in 1988. After realizing how few resources were available for people living with disabilities to get active, he started Sports Ability Alliance in 1990 to make sure people with all abilities could enjoy sports…

It’s become a lifestyle choice for me.” Now, over 20 years later, she is the president of the nonprofit and remains dedicated to providing an accessible theater experience for all…
How accessible playgrounds foster independence for kids with disabilities
August 4, 2023 | Source: STLPR
When Natalie Mackay’s son Zachary Blakemore was 3 years old, typical playgrounds were challenging for him to navigate in his wheelchair. Often, they were places of burden. “It would emphasize his limitations. He would start to ask questions why he couldn’t play,” she told St. Louis on the Air. “And I wanted to fix that problem.” Inspired by her son’s experience, Mackay founded Unlimited Play nearly 20 years ago. Her first project was Zachary’s Playground in Lake St. Louis, an accessible playground honoring him…

United Airlines recently announced it is in the process of adding Braille signage in the cabins of its mainline fleet, including for seat row numbers and within and around aircraft lavatories. As a blind traveler, I’m excited about the increased level of independence that the addition of this tactile reading system will provide while flying. United deserves a lot of credit for going above and beyond minimum compliance and finding innovative ways to improve air travel for passengers with disabilities…

But now I know that I’m dyslexic.”…
A boy on the autism spectrum struggled with a haircut. His barber saved the day
August 7, 2023 | Source: NPR
A few years ago, LaQuista Erinna’s seven-year-old son, Jackson, was diagnosed with autism. This wasn’t a surprise; ever since he was a baby, Erinna had noticed Jackson was sensitive to everyday things — textures in his clothes, light touches and loud sounds. But one of the most difficult things was getting a haircut. He’d get so anxious that he’d start kicking and screaming. It was really hard for Erinna to watch, so she decided to stop taking him to the barber…

The first day of school is just around the corner, so we’re taking the opportunity to share the story of one of Austin’s most treasured educational institutions: The Texas School for the Deaf. In addition to being the oldest continually operating public school in the state, the Texas School for the Deaf is one of the oldest sites in Austin. The 167-year-old institution is older than the Texas State Capitol building. The school’s origins can be traced back to a deaf man named Matthew Clark, who petitioned the state to open its first school for deaf residents in 1856…
Five reasons to get excited about governmentwide Section 508 assessment criteria
August 8, 2023 | Source: Federal News Network
In July 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, yet it is understandable that people are concerned about the lack of progress over the last 33 years. Far too often, accessibility has become just a checklist item that agencies cross off without understanding it. That said, under the Biden administration, there has been a renewed effort to address accessibility. Recently, I was impressed by the General information — Governmentwide section 508 assessment criteria pages published on Section508.gov…

The Vancouver Pride Parade and Festival, which began in 1978, historically had thousands of people wind through Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood and end up at a festival at Sunset Beach. In May, parade organizers announced that the parade would start in the West End at Davie and Denman streets before proceeding down Beach Avenue and Pacific Street…
Major sporting events are rarely accessible to disabled fans. This Women’s World Cup, FIFA is trying to reverse that trend
August 4, 2023 | Source: ABC- Australia
Going to cheer on your favourite sports team should be fun and easy to do, but when you have a disability it’s rarely that simple. At a recent sports event I attended my friend and I had our ‘accessible’ seats given away before we arrived. The couple sitting in them had mobility issues and had struggled to access their own seats, which were down several stairs. The usher’s solution was to grab two portable chairs and squish my friend and I next to the pair who had our ticketed seats…
