The branch, referred to as Penn-North since it sits at the intersection of Pennsylvania and North avenues, underwent renovations in 2023, and although these changes provided new equipment and spaces for members of the community to enjoy, the building’s elevator was removed, making the space inaccessible for disabled and certain elderly patrons…

Bellingham’s elderly and disabled face challenges navigating WTA public transportation
February 9, 2025 | Source: The Front
Some elderly and disabled Bellingham residents struggle to use the Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) bus system due to limited features and accessibility issues. WTA allows riders to apply for paratransit eligibility based on criteria set by the Americans with Disabilities Act, with approval granted by the transit center. Paratransit is meant to provide transportation for individuals who are unable to ride fixed-route buses. Eligibility on who can ride paratransit is not solely based on having a disability or medical diagnosis but rather on whether those conditions prevent riders from using fixed-route buses…
Maryland disability advocates warn proposed $200 million budget cut imperils vital work
February 9, 2025 | Source: CBS News
Programs that serve Marylanders with disabilities could lose $200 million in state funding amid a nearly $3 billion budget deficit. Advocates for those with disabilities say these cuts will impact more than 18,000 Marylanders and their families. Gov. Wes Moore says it will take both increased revenues and reduced spending to make up the gap. In his presentation of the budget last month, Moore committed to generating new revenue while also cutting $2 billion from the budget…
City’s homeless shelters fail on accessibility for people with disabilities
February 10, 2025 | Source: Chicago Sun-Times
The city of Chicago’s shelter system is failing homeless disabled people it is meant to support, leaving them out in the freezing winter weather. Two homeless senior adults we have been working with for the last few months, one with a mobility disability requiring personal assistance from the other, have now been waiting for an accessible shelter bed for 47 days. In that time, they have been living in their truck and desperately seeking housing after an unexpected eviction from their apartment of eight years…

Disabled Army Veteran Kenneth Speaker and daughter Stephanie, who has epilepsy and asthma, have been advocates for 11 years. Bus fares around Buffalo are too expensive, and not accessible enough for those with disabilities, said Stephanie Speaker, a resident of Depew. “I’m trying to get this whole thing fixed, that paratransit will go further,” she said…

February 11, 2025 | Source: WVXU
Cincinnati is requiring public events to be more accessible. The changes come after several people supported by LADD — an organization that helps adults with developmental disabilities live independently — contacted Council member Victoria Parks following one of the city’s biggest annual events last year. “They went to the Flying Pig Marathon and could not find a bathroom where somebody in a wheelchair would find accessibility,” Parks explains…
Ditch vote-by-mail for drop boxes? Most aren’t accessible to Utahns with disabilities
February 11, 2025 | Source: The Salt Lake Tribune
Many of Utah’s ballot drop boxes are installed on curbs, making them too high for people with disabilities to reach. Others are placed outdoors in an area without a level surface area to approach the box. Some are stowed inside buildings without accommodations like ramps, where accessible entrances are locked or there is no accessible parking. More than half of 291 ballot drop boxes assessed by Utah’s Disability Law Center during the 2022 election cycle were not accessible to people with disabilities…

His genes forecast Alzheimer’s. His brain had other plans
February 12, 2025 | Source: NPR
People who inherit one very rare gene mutation are virtually guaranteed to develop Alzheimer’s before they turn 50. Except for Doug Whitney. “I’m 75 years old, and I think I’m functioning fairly well,” says Whitney, who lives near Seattle. “I’m still not showing any of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.” Now a team of scientists is trying to understand how Whitney’s brain has defied his genetic destiny. “If we are able to learn what is causing the protection here, then we could translate that to therapeutic approaches and apply that to the more common forms of the disease,” says Dr. Jorge Llibre-Guerra…

SF supervisors might axe accessibility program penalties
February 12, 2025 | Source: San Francisco Examiner
San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors will soon consider whether to defang a nearly 10-year-old program intended to make local businesses more accessible for handicapped people. Board President Rafael Mandelman has put forward a proposal to scrap long-delayed penalties set in place by the initiative. Under the program, code enforcement officials have pushed property owners to remodel the front entrances of public-facing businesses that are not easily accessible to those with disabilities — a common problem in a city in which many buildings are more than 100 years old…
The boomer housing crisis is pacing to get even worse: ‘We’ve never had a population pyramid that looks like this’
February 12, 2025 | Source: Fortune
A selection of lucky baby boomers seemingly have won the housing market, but they haven’t met their final boss just yet—the elusive retirement home. The generation is aging into worn infrastructure, and it appears that senior homes are ill-equipped to deal with the incoming class. What once was an excess of supply has become a dearth, as the Wall Street Journal warns of a shortage on the horizon. If the current rate of development stays the same, just 191,000 new housing units will be added by 2030—short of the 560,000 needed to usher in the aging population, data service NIC MAP tells the Journal…

As an editor at Lonely Planet, I’m always looking for ways to help travelers tailor their trips to their own needs, especially when it comes to accessibility…
‘This hurts everyone’: Advocates say Toronto failing to meet accessibility standards
February 7, 2025 | Source: Village Report- Canada
In the 23 years he’s been a wheelchair user, Luke Anderson can’t recall many days where he hasn’t encountered a barrier as a person living with a disability in Toronto. Whether it’s a Kensington Market storefront without an entry ramp, raised seating at a restaurant on Queen, or a Dundas Street café without an automatic door, obstacles come in many forms, he said. The issue, he argues, is that Toronto has failed to implement provincial legislation to make Ontario barrier-free by January 2025, known as the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
