You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” ― Maya Angelou

Why accessibility is missing from the DEI conversation
February 6, 2025 | Source: WYFF
Disability rights activists swiftly condemned President Donald Trump’s remarks on Thursday in which he blamed diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, efforts and, specifically, disabled people for the deadly American Airlines plane crash that took place in Washington, D.C. On Wednesday night, a commercial passenger jet and a military helicopter collided near Ronald Reagan National Airport. There were a total of 67 people on the flight, and no one is expected to have survived…

Proposed trims to Minnesota’s disability waiver program concern people reliant on service
January 29, 2025 | Source: MPR News
For the Perry family, Minnesota’s disability waiver program is a lifeline. “The waiver system has been amazing,” said David Perry. Perry’s 18-year-old son, Nico, is autistic and has Down syndrome. Through the waiver system, Nico has an aide that gives him support. “She’s just extraordinary. She works. She picks him up, she takes him to therapy, she works with him on her own. But also they get to play. They get to go to the pool, into the park, and to go shopping, to movies, and just do the things that teenagers get to do,” Perry said…
Northerners deserve accessible emergency services
January 30, 2025 | Source: NNSL Media- Canada
Nobody deserves to be alone without any way to ask for help during times of crisis. However, for many deaf, deafened, hard of hearing and speech-impaired (DHHSI) Northerners, this fear is a stark reality. In each of Canada’s provinces, text to 9-1-1 service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing call centres to communicate with DHHSI individuals during an emergency, ensuring immediate access to help when it’s needed most…
Disabled workers are getting screened out of digital hiring
January 30, 2025 | Source: NBC10 Philadelphia
Nearly 35 years after the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, President Donald Trump’s executive order targeting all federal diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility efforts — as well as the demand that all government workers return to offices — threatens to reverse fair access for people put on the margins, including disabled workers. The administration’s moves highlight that accommodations for disabled people in the workplace are as crucial as ever…
Disability advocates call on state representatives to loosen the Medicaid income cap
January 31, 2025 | Source: Iowa Public Radio
Iowans with disabilities are asking state lawmakers to loosen Medicaid income limits so they can advance their careers and get married without risking the loss of health care services they rely on. Employed people with disabilities can’t have more than $12,000 of available resources or make more than 250% of the federal poverty level — $37,650 per year for one person — if they want to keep their government-funded health insurance. At a news conference at the Statehouse Wednesday held by Allies in Advocacy, six Iowans talked about how changing those limits would change their lives…
Federal probe of Bridgeport bus service focused on accessibility, documents show
January 31, 2025 | Source: Connecticut Public Radio
An ongoing federal investigation of bus service in Bridgeport is centered on problems experienced by riders with disabilities, according to documents the local transit agency was ordered to release this month. Those records show officials from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Connecticut are assessing whether Greater Bridgeport Transit (GBT) provides adequate accommodations for passengers who are disabled. Connecticut Public reported previously that federal agencies flagged subpar performance on GBT’s paratransit bus program as cause for concern…
Widespread Accessibility Barriers Still Exist for Veterans, People with Disabilities
February 2, 2025 | Source: The Rochelle News-Leader and Paralyzed Veterans of America and News Channel 9
Despite the Americans with Disabilities Act being the law of the land for nearly 35 years, a startling new survey from Paralyzed Veterans of America shows accessibility remains an unfilled promise for millions of Americans. According to the survey, over 80% of people using a mobility device faced an accessibility barrier in the past 6 months. PVA members (Veterans with spinal cord injuries or diseases, like MS and ALS) cite sidewalks, restaurants, and retailers as common places with restricted access for wheelchair users and others with mobility devices…
Opinion: A lack of accessibility leaves disabled commuters behind
February 5, 2025 | Source: Washington Square News
Nearly 1 in 6 New York City residents have a disability, and for many, the subway system remains a source of exclusion rather than access. As of January, 336 subway stations in New York City, or 72%, are not accessible, meaning they do not have an elevator or ramp to enter through. This not only discriminates against disabled individuals, but also makes transportation harder for the elderly and those with strollers and luggage. Many of the 136 stations designated accessible by the MTA have inconsistencies: Some stations are only accessible on one side, for specific lines or only during rush hour…
House Passes Bill to Boost Building Accessibility for Coloradans with Disabilities
February 5, 2025 | Source: Colorado House Democrats
The House today passed legislation sponsored by Representatives Junie Joseph and Rebekah Stewart to improve accessibility in new and renovated buildings and facilities for Coloradans with disabilities. HB25-1030 passed by a vote of 41-22. “Coloradans with disabilities rely on certain accessibility features in going about their daily lives, and it’s important that new and renovated buildings such as schools and health facilities meet or exceed the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act,” said Rep. Junie Joseph, D-Boulder…
Straight to the Top: New Nonstop Elevators to Speed Subway Accessibility Coverage
February 5, 2025 | Source: THE CITY – NYC News
The MTA is ramping up installations of elevators that will move riders directly between streets and platforms — skipping mezzanine levels altogether. The elevated Woodhaven Boulevard station on the J/Z lines in Queens last month became the first stop where elevators bypass mezzanines to link riders directly with subway service in both directions. The shift, according to MTA officials, is designed to save the transit agency hundreds of millions of dollars in elevator installation and upkeep while also advancing toward a federal court-mandated goal of making 95% of stations accessible to people with disabilities by 2055…
VA’s new EHR is not accessibility compliant
February 6, 2025 | Source: Nextgov/FCW
The Department of Veterans Affairs’ new Oracle Cerner electronic health record system has never been in compliance with federal accessibility requirements, current and former VA officials, veteran service organizations and congressional staffers told Nextgov/FCW. VA contracted with Cerner — which was later acquired by Oracle — in 2018 to modernize its legacy health record system and make it interoperable with the Pentagon’s new electronic health record, which was also provided by Cerner…
Clearing snowy sidewalks critical for accessibility in winter months
February 6, 2025 | Source: KTVH
When the weather gets as cold as it’s been this week, getting out and shoveling snow may be the last thing on your mind, but scooping up piles of snow may be someone’s ticket to getting to work or saving a life. For Theresa Gardener, a receptionist at Ability Montana, her wheelchair is her main mode of transportation, putting hundreds of miles on it in the warmer months. “We are not doing it just to go and have some fun out in the cold, maybe we have to get groceries and we do not have a bus to get,” Gardner says…
At Omnium Circus, inclusion and accessibility take center stage
February 6, 2025 | Source: DC Theater Arts
The Omnium Circus made its debut in 2021, but for founder and executive director Lisa B. Lewis, the journey began more than three decades earlier. While performing as a clown, Lewis noticed an entire section of the arena sitting with their arms crossed and seemed angry. Despite being at the circus, they struggled to understand the acts going on around them. Lewis’ clown partner started telling jokes in sign language, and the group erupted in laughter. “It was the power of inclusion,” she said…
Uncertainty in Michigan looms over Trump promise to dismantle US Department of Education
February 6, 2025 | Source: Detroit Free Press
As President Donald Trump seeks to shutter the U.S. Department of Education, the potential closure of the federal agency — which, among other purposes, directs funding for the education of low-income children and investigates allegations of violations against students with disabilities — has raised questions and created anxiety for Michiganders. “The president’s proposal to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education is an unwise idea that fails to recognize the U.S. Department of Education’s role,” state Superintendent Michael Rice wrote in an emailed statement…

Canada’s population is aging rapidly, yet our built environment is not adapting quickly enough. By 2050, the number of seniors will be double that of today’s, reaching one-fourth of the population. The low compliance rates are despite Mayor Sadiq Khan setting out that all new housing should meet one of these standards…

February 3, 2025 | Source: Glam Adelaide- Australia
For music lovers around Adelaide, major festivals like WOMAD, Laneway, and Harvest Rock offer fans the opportunity to see some of their favourite musicians and bands in the same setting. Festivals like these are major events around the world, but too often, important factors like accessibility and inclusiveness are overlooked. This means that often, big bill festivals are challenging occasions for people living with physical or intellectual disabilities, as well as their family or carers, who often feel that music festivals are not catered to suit everybody’s needs…
Using technology to empower persons with disabilities
February 3, 2025 | Source: Kuensel Online- Bhutan
Technology can be a supertool, especially for persons with disabilities (PWD). A young Bhutanese woman with cerebral palsy, who cannot speak, relies on her thumb and smartphone to communicate, whether through text messages or by spelling words on the palms of her family and friends…

Hinksey Heights boardwalk makes Oxford ‘hidden gem’ accessible
February 3, 2025 | Source: BBC- UK
Volunteers say a rare “hidden gem” fen landscape has been made accessible thanks to work on a new boardwalk. Visitors to the Hinksey Heights Nature Reserve in Oxfordshire can now walk along a large section of trail via a 650m (2,132ft) continuous boardwalk that was previously “often too wet and muddy to navigate”. They can choose a 1.5-mile circular walk, or a longer route that connects Chilswell Valley with Harcourt Hill, the Hurst and Cumnor…
How universities can help make our cities more accessible for people with disabilities
February 3, 2025 | Source: The Conversation- Canada
People living with disabilities, ranging in severity, regularly face barriers. Oftentimes, built environments are designed in ways that fail to consider the needs of those in situations of disability. That can include improperly sized ramps for wheelchair users or public spaces that are not sensory friendly. One 2024 study found that most buildings in Canada are not accessible for people with disabilities. This lack of accommodation can have a serious impact on a person’s quality of life…
