Making the Most of the Holidays: Travel Tips for People Living with ALS
November 26, 2024 | Source: ALS Association
With Christmas approaching, people living with disabilities aren’t always considered. With the rise of Holiday and Office parties, access remains the biggest issue for those who are disabled. WMDT spoke with officials from the MAC Area Agency on Aging and the ADA Mid-Atlantic Center. These groups consistently work to provide elderly individuals with the resources they need. “According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 4 people have a disability. 1 in 4 which is huge.” Said ADA Center Director Ann Deschamps, who wants people to be more mindful and inclusive…

November 21, 2024 | Source: WBUR
There were 50 incidents on Election Day that hampered the ability of people with disabilities to vote in Massachusetts, according to a report issued Wednesday by a commission of several voting rights groups. Voting assistance machines for those with disabilities broke down, while main entrances and exits to some precincts could only be accessed by stairs, according to the report issued by the Massachusetts Election Protection Coalition. Four polling places in Boston had a shortage of ballots…
A disability policy champion’s time in Congress has come to an end
November 22, 2024 | Source: The 19th
Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey Jr., considered one of the chamber’s leading champions of disability policy, conceded in his Senate race last night, ending the Democrat’s decades-long career in Congress. Republican Dave McCormick, a former hedge fund manager, won by less than 0.5 percent, a margin that had led to an automatic recount. Casey was best known as a “mild mannered,” even “boring” moderate. (A Philadelphia Inquirer columnist once compared him to a bowl of oatmeal.)…
Adapting outdoors: accessibility extends into nature
November 22, 2024 | Source: Concord Monitor
Bodhi Bhattarai’s fifth-grade field trip to Sewalls Falls to observe ecosystems aimed to bring students into nature to see firsthand the organisms they had discussed in class. For Bhattarai, however, his focus remained on the ground below him. The 10-year-old, who has spinal muscular atrophy, uses a motorized wheelchair to get around. “I didn’t like it because it was a trail and it had many roots and rocks, and it was so bumpy that I almost tipped over five times,” he said of the October trip…
Shapiro needs to commit to disability funding
November 24, 2024 | Source: Times Observer
As the dust settles from the 2024 election, Pennsylvania’s leaders must now prepare for the 2025 Legislative Session and the forthcoming Fiscal Year 24/25 budget debate, as families, caregivers, and individuals in the Intellectual Disabilities and Autism (ID/A) community look to Gov. Josh Shapiro to champion crucial funding needs. Last year’s budget delivered a historic funding boost for ID/A services, reflecting Governor Shapiro’s deep commitment to this essential community…
Not Accessible: Federal Policies Unnecessarily Complicate Funding to Support Differently Abled Researchers. We Can Change That
November 25, 2024 | Source: Federation of American Scientists
Persons with disabilities (PWDs) are considered the largest minority in the nation and in the world. There are existing policies and procedures from agencies, directorates, or funding programs that provide support for Accessibility and Accommodations (A&A) in federally funded research efforts. Unfortunately, these policies and procedures all have different requirements, processes, deadlines, and restrictions. This lack of standardization can make it difficult to acquire the necessary support for PWDs by placing the onus on them or their Principal Investigators (PIs) to navigate complex and unique application processes for the same types of support…
Disabled Catholics deserve more than parish accessibility

To make the church more accessible and welcoming, begin with awareness, says formation leader
November 26, 2024 | Source: The Record Newspaper
The year I started high school, my family moved to a small town that had one Catholic community. The old parish church had a ramp out front, but once we got inside, my younger brother’s wheelchair couldn’t fit down the aisles. Our problem was solved, however, when we learned the parish had just built a brand-new complex on the outskirts of town. Its double doors were wide, there were no stairs, and the gathering space had rows of folding chairs that could easily be moved to accommodate a wheelchair…
State websites don’t meet upcoming DOJ accessibility requirements
November 26, 2024 | Source: State Scoop
A report published this month by a cohort of web enthusiasts shows that no U.S. state website is completely compliant with accessibility standards set by the Department of Justice, like closed captions and compatibility with screen readers. The findings were published in the Web Almanac, an annual “state of the web” report compiled by web industry professionals who participate in a community web development tracking project called the HTTP Archive…

Finley is a Boy Scout and has a disability that impacts his ability to walk, but that doesn’t stop him when it comes to sports. Finley has scuba-dived and played rugby, basketball, tennis, and track field. He lives in Austin but travels across Texas to ensure he gets to explore and live his life to the fullest. “In Boy Scouts, he’s the only one with a physical disability,” Finley’s mother Dawn McKeag said. “At the same time, we don’t let that stop him.”…
‘Wicked’ Star Marissa Bode Condemns ‘Aggressive’ and ‘Very Gross’ Comments About Nessarose’s Disability: It Is ‘Low-Hanging Fruit That Too Many of You Are Comfortable Taking’
November 30, 2024 | Source: Variety and New Mobility
“Wicked” star Marissa Bode has spoken out against the negative comments and jokes about her character Nessarose’s disability, calling them “aggressive,” “very gross” and “harmful.” In a five-minute video posted on TikTok on Friday, Bode — who uses a wheelchair on screen and in real life — shared her thoughts on the insensitive comments circulating online about Nessarose, the younger sister of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo). “It is absolutely OK to not like a fictional character,” Bode said…
How Wheel the World is changing accessibility in Kalamazoo, one business at a time
November 30, 2024 | Source: Second Wave Media
When Tyler Houser was given the opportunity for Airway Fun Center to partner with Wheel the World, the decision was easy. The Portage family entertainment center had always prided itself on being welcoming and accessible, but Houser was eager to learn how they could do even better. When the initiative’s specialists reviewed their newly renovated bathrooms, they identified a missing key feature: vertical grab bars in the handicap-accessible stalls.

He got aboard the DEC’s mobile wheelchair and traversed Santanoni’s five miles of dirt and gravel trails…
Breaking Down Barriers for Travelers With Disabilities
December 2, 2024 | Source: Reasons to be Cheerful
On the edge of the idyllic coastal city of Yarmouth, Maine, a trail weaves through a dense strip of forest. There are no steep sections, just flat or gentle slopes. Hundreds of feet of boardwalk, with minimal gaps between the flush wooden planks, carry nature lovers over the top of marshy wetlands. This segment of the West Side Trail, which soon will extend to about 2.5 miles, was designed with accessibility in mind, explains trail coordinator Dan Ostrye, a member of the Rotary Club of Yarmouth, a partner in the project…
Companies Can Pay Disabled People Below Minimum Wage. The Department of Labor Wants to Change That
December 3, 2024 | Source: Mother Jones
On Tuesday, the Department of Labor filed a proposed rule that could end the subminimum wage for disabled people—beginning the process of closing a loophole that can let companies pay disabled employees less than a dollar per hour. When the federal minimum wage was established in 1938, it included a carveout that would permit companies to obtain certificates and pay disabled people less than non-disabled people. The argument for this subminimum wage is that disabled people bring less value to the workforce…
The Communications Battle For Accessible And Accurate Live Captions: Humans Versus AI
December 3, 2024 | Source: Forbes- Toby Wong
In live U.S. events and on TV, the speech-to-text battle is unfolding between human-generated captions versus captions by AI and automated speech recognition (ASR). This matters for stakeholders with disabilities who are legally entitled to access and effective communications equal to those without disabilities. Accurate, high-quality live captions provide real-time access in meetings, presentations, videoconferencing, courtrooms, classrooms, hospitals, live TV and events…
A Proclamation on International Day of Persons with Disabilities
December 3, 2024 | Source: White House- President Joseph Biden
The over one billion disabled people around the world have made incredible contributions — propelling us all forward in the pursuit of progress. This International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we recommit to ensuring that people with disabilities are treated with dignity and respect and have every opportunity to reach their full potential. I remain proud that one of my earliest acts as a United States Senator was co-sponsoring the Rehabilitation Act, banning discrimination on the basis of disability by any entity funded by the Federal Government…

On a larger scale, only around 1% of students in special education departments in California have an orthopedic impairment, according to the California Department of Education…

Ont. woman says accessible appliances next to impossible to buy
November 21, 2024 | Source: CTV News- Canada
Finding appliances with accessibility in mind is proving to be a not-so-simple task for a Kitchener, Ont. woman who is blind. Her search came up short for a new oven and stovetop that meets her needs, and has exposed what some say is a serious market gap by manufacturers. Alyssa Clelland loves to cook and bake. She knows the kitchen like the back of her hand. “If my fingers fit like that, then it’s right on centre,” the 26-year-old said, showing CTV News how she aligns the pots on the stove…
Dystonia: ‘I never thought I’d have kids due to my disability’
November 23, 2024 | Source: BBC- UK
“I thought I would never have kids, and now I have a son.” Those are the words of a sports coach who has lifted the lid on his “hidden disability”, after being named by a charity as one of the UK’s most influential disabled people. James Sutliff, 40, had been a picture of good health, playing semi-professional rugby and working as a fitness model and self-employed plumber, when in 2008 he woke up one morning feeling unwell. His speech was slurred, his movements were affected, and his mental health suffered as medics struggled to diagnose what was wrong…
Why accessibility shouldn’t compromise on aesthetic
November 26, 2024 | Source: Creative Boom- UK
Nowadays, there’s no excuse for brands and services to be inaccessible with so many tools at their disposal to ensure otherwise. Equally, there’s no reason to ‘play it safe’ and compromise on visual appeal. SomeOne has proved that accessibility and aesthetic can coexist in its latest work for The Motability Scheme, which has helped anyone with a qualifying mobility allowance in the UK to get moving for the last 45 years. The scheme is delivered by commercial organisation Motability Operations – the UK’s largest car leasing company – and offers everything from cars to Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs), scooters, and powered wheelchairs…

November 26, 2024 | Source: Rushcliffe Borough Council- UK
Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) has called on the Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner MP to end the postcode lottery of Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs) provision and stop the unfair distribution of the funding. The Council’s Portfolio Holder for Planning and Housing Cllr Roger Upton has written to her as the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. It outlines the Council’s ongoing concerns on the inequitable way funds are allocated which are critical for disabled individuals to have access to essential modifications in their homes that can aid mobility around their home and improve their quality of life…
The tram stop outside my office is wheelchair accessible but I can’t get on any of the trams
November 27, 2024 | Source: ABC- Australia
Right outside my office, there is a wheelchair-accessible tram stop that would be perfect to help me get home. It was upgraded a few years ago, but I have never been able to use it. That is because all the trams that run along Route 1 have steps and high doors, an automatic no-go zone for someone like myself who is in a wheelchair. This mismatch of stops and trams is a frustration that I share with hundreds of other wheelchair commuters in Melbourne, and despite promises that there would be change soon, it has taken forever for things to improve…
Rural Albertans with disabilities positioned to benefit from accessibility legislation, NDP says
November 27, 2024 | Source: CTV News- Canada
The UCP may be misreading the needs of rural Albertans with disabilities, said a shadow cabinet minister planning to introduce an accessibility bill this session. Accessibility limitations can be particularly acute in rural Alberta because of travel distances, limited infrastructure and the centralization of services in larger centres, said Marie Renaud, the NDP’s community and social services critic. She noted that delivery of government services often involves filling out online forms, which means a lack of reliable internet in some rural areas compounds obstacles for people with disabilities…
Disability advocates say province ‘not even close’ to reaching full accessibility by 2025 goal
November 28, 2024 | Source: The Trillium- Canada and Inside Halton
Disability advocates say Ontario is on track to miss its goal of a fully accessible province by 2025. Thirty years after the launch of a movement that eventually led to Ontario passing accessibility legislation, they also question whether provincewide accessibility will ever happen. “Ontario will not be accessible to Ontarians with disabilities … as the (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) AODA had promised, not even close,” David Lepofsky, chair of the AODA Alliance, said at Queen’s Park on Monday…

Right vs reality: India’s accessibility challenge
November 29, 2024 | Source: Deccan Herald- India
In a country where laws promise accessibility for all, particularly persons with disabilities, finding a truly ‘accessible’ public space feels like spotting a unicorn – rare and magical. Despite legal frameworks like the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, and initiatives such as the Accessible India Campaign, the reality on the ground often resembles an obstacle course rather than a step toward inclusivity. A recent judgement by the Supreme Court has recognised accessibility for persons with disability as a fundamental right as well as a human right…
How these families have prepared their children with disability for life at mainstream schools
November 30, 2024 | Source: ABC- Australia
From the moment Fiona Gould’s son Archie was born, she was determined he would reach his potential. However, she knew she would have to be his biggest advocate — and the first major test was the transition to primary school. Archie, 7, is blind, hearing impaired, lives with a form of cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. Ms Gould wanted a school that would both support his needs and see him as more than just his medical conditions. “I wanted to be sure the school was the right fit for Archie.”…

When Celia Chartres-Aris was a teenager she was “constantly in pain” and had to give up her active and sporty life. The 27-year-old, from Hampshire, was born with the rare genetic Loeys-Dietz syndrome, which means she lives with multiple organ failure and is unable to eat or drink. After recent struggles to find a job for being “too disabled”, she now fights with “every breath I have” for improvement of disability and human rights. Earlier this month, she topped the list of the Shaw Trust Disability Power 100 that recognise the achievements of the UK’s most influential disabled people…

Ontario accessibility act lacks standards to solve housing crisis for people with disabilities
December 2, 2024 | Source: Caledon Enterprise- Canada
With less than a year to meet its 2025 accessibility deadline, Ontario faces mounting criticism over housing standards that advocates say fail seniors and people with disabilities. A few years ago, Kate Chung, co-founder of the Accessible Housing Network, and her partner Doug both had knee and hip replacement surgeries. They found their apartment no longer fit their needs as they transitioned to using mobility aids. Extensive, costly renovations to make their home safer and more manageable for their mobility needs still left many accessibility issues unresolved…

In 2023, 101 million people, or 27% of the European Union (EU) population over the age of 16, had some form of disability. Through enhancing access to information, education or the job market, technology has great potential to transform lives and create a more inclusive and accessible world for all.

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
