Rev. William Barber calls for accessibility reforms after being removed from NC theater
December 29, 2023 | Source: The News and Observer
A disabled civil rights leader was escorted out of an AMC theater in Greenville, North Carolina, by police over his disability accommodations earlier this week. On Tuesday, Rev. William J. Barber II, 60, and his 90-year-old mother went to see ‘The Color Purple.’ Barber brought his own chair to the theater because he has a rare form of arthritis known as ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammatory disease that makes it hard for him to sit in or rise from low chairs. Barber said he placed his chair in a section for guests with disabilities, but theater employees deemed it a “fire hazard,” he said during a press conference Friday…

December 22, 2023 | Source: WRVO Public Media
How to Dance in Ohio made its world premiere in Syracuse last year at Syracuse Stage. A year later it opened on Broadway. Before the show begins all seven autistic actors come out on stage and give the audience a primer on what they’re about to see. There’s music, there’s dancing, of course, and all seven autistic characters are played by autistic actors. “There’s this saying, ‘If you’ve met one autistic person… you’ve met one autistic person,'” Conor Tague, who plays Tommy, says at the top of the show…
All-electric push sparks concerns about for-hire vehicle accessibility
December 22, 2023 | Source: Spectrum
Amid the push to make the city’s taxi and rideshare fleet all-electric, disability advocates are concerned wheelchair-accessible vehicles, or WAVs, will be squeezed out. Eman Rimawi-Doster, a double amputee, was in a wheelchair over the summer, and said it was hard getting a for-hire WAV in the Bronx through the Access-a-Ride E-Hail pilot, which allows users to order an app-based car on-demand, instead of pre-arranging one. “This was before the Uber was added…

Harris said his “Creating Your Line” work is an invitation for people of all abilities to choose their own adventures…

December 25, 2023 | Source: CBS Colorado

That’s where Disruptive Ink is looking to make a change. Disruptive Ink, located in Lakewood, is a local female LGBTQ+-owned tattoo shop and they’re offering a welcoming space for everyone. Many of their clients are in the gay or trans community. Plus, they also support the deaf and hard-of-hearing community…

Justin Cooper: The Accessibility Advocate
December 26, 2023 | Source: Chicago Reader
I was born and raised in Chicago by my mother, who has taken care of me my whole life. Growing up, I had to deal with a lot of things—being disabled, but also being a Black person in Chicago. It’s been an interesting journey, having to navigate systems that often don’t benefit people with disabilities or people of color. I was really raised by my mom to have strong values, [and fight] for the rights of people who are often disenfranchised and who are often not paid attention to…

Most of the vehicles involved were accessible for seniors, wheelchair users and people with disabilities, including a 2017 Ford T150 van sold to 13 different people over 11 months. The Department of Justice alleges Rock’s non-delivery sales scheme occurred between 2019 and 2023…
Lego Braille Bricks review: An essential toy for the blind community
December 27, 2023 | Source: Maxwell Ivey at USA Today Reviewed
As a 57-year-old man who’s legally blind, when I was asked to review Braille Legos, I thought, maybe I’m too old to play with kids’ toys. But I was quickly reminded of something my dad used to say: “Adults are just kids over 48 inches tall.” With this assignment, I intend to channel my inner child as much as possible. As you’ll see from the photos below, I thought the great Fred Rogers would be a solid source for inspiration, though my red sweater is, admittedly, not nearly as suave as his…

Michigan state parks system leads the nation in accessible recreation
December 28, 2023 | Source: Bridge Detroit and WSJM
A steady push to expand off-road mobility chairs in state parks and recreation areas has made Michigan a national leader in accessible outdoor recreation. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources this month announced it now has more track chairs — rugged mobility devices that have tracks like a snowmobile instead of wheels — than any other state parks system in the nation. “You hate to think that making parks accessible is a luxury, because it shouldn’t be,” said Michelle O’Kelly, the DNR staffer in charge of expanding the track chair program…

December 28, 2023 | Source: Fed Scoop and FEDweek and ExecutiveGov
The General Services Administration on Thursday submitted its latest report on federal website accessibility to Congress, an analysis that represents the next step in the government’s long-running and often-beleaguered effort to ensure that everyone can use its digital resources. Section 508, which was established as a 1998 amendment to the Rehabilitation Act, remains the primary portion of federal law outlining agencies’ responsibilities for digital accessibility. Critically, compliance with Section 508 remains a major challenge for federal agencies…

Public spaces should be designed to be open, inclusive and inviting to everyone, whether those are outdoor gardens, indoor shopping malls or cultural institutions. Rich Donovan was tasked with writing the fourth review of the province’s progress on implementing the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) by its 2025 deadline. It’s going so well that he recommended the government declare a crisis. Instead, the government sat on his report for six months and released it quietly at the end of the legislative sitting. Disability advocates call for government investment to improve Australian beach accessibility
January 4, 2024 | Source: ABC- Australia
Sandy feet, splashing in the waves, fending off seagulls — visiting the beach is perhaps the most Australian day off there is. But this simple joy is not so simple for some. Victorian parents Colin and Charlene Elsum are among many Australians who live less than 50 kilometres from the beach. They have never had a family beach day, however, because their six-year-old daughter, Goldie, spends most of her time in a wheelchair. Goldie lives with a rare neurodevelopmental condition that causes epilepsy and daily seizures, making it challenging for the family to be out on the beach without accessible infrastructure…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
