Accessibility in the News — 4/21/2023.
Accessibility in the arts is crucial for creating a more inclusive and diverse society. By making the arts accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities, we allow people to fully participate in and enjoy the cultural experiences that are so integral to our society. Accessibility means providing options for people with different types of disabilities, such as hearing or visual impairments, mobility issues, or cognitive challenges. It also means considering other barriers that may prevent people from accessing the arts, such as language barriers or economic limitations. By prioritizing accessibility in the arts, we create a more equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to engage with and contribute to our cultural heritage.

As Presenters Cut Back on Streams, Some Disabled Arts Lovers Feel Left Out
April 14, 2023 | Source: The New York Times
For Mollie Gathro, live theater was a once-a-year indulgence if the stars aligned perfectly. Gathro has degenerative disc disease and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, resulting in joint pain, weakness and loss of mobility. Because of her disabilities, going to a show meant having to secure accessible seating after hourslong phone calls with her “nemesis,” Ticketmaster; finding a friend to drive her or arranging other transportation; and hoping her body would cooperate enough for her to actually go out…

April 13, 2023 | Source: Radio West
In 2019, “Atlantic” writer and editor John Hendrickson wrote a piece about then-presidential candidate Joe Biden’s struggle with stuttering. It forced Hendrickson to reconcile with his own stutter, too. After his article came out, other people who stutter began reaching out to Hendrickson and share their stories with him, prompting him to begin writing about his own experiences with stuttering. In “Life on Delay,” Hendrickson allows readers deep inside his life — reflecting on his battles with depression, bullying, substance abuse and more…
In ‘major breakthrough,’ new test can detect Parkinson’s disease before symptoms appear
April 14, 2023 | Source: USA TODAY
A test of spinal fluid may be able to predict who is likely to develop Parkinson’s disease years before symptoms appear, according to a new study. Parkinson’s is a degenerative syndrome that results in the gradual loss of brain circuitry involved in movement, thinking and behavior. It’s the fastest-growing neurodegenerative condition in the U.S. and is diagnosed in about 90,000 Americans every year, according to a 2022 study. There is no blood or laboratory testing that diagnoses Parkinson’s disease, said Michael Henderson, a neuroscientist at the Van Andel Institute, a biomedical nonprofit dedicated to researching Parkinson’s and other diseases…

April 14, 2023 | Source: WUSA9
Mario Bonds is a visually impaired singer and songwriter who you may recognize from season 15 of “American Idol” or season two of “The Glee Project.” Bonds now has people talking, not because of his talent, but because of a video he posted to TikTok. While on a trip to Atlanta, the D.C. native was stuck on an elevator for 10 minutes because the digital control panel had no buttons in Braille. “I don’t feel blind when I walk with my cane, I don’t feel disabled when I have to feel around for stuff, but when things are inaccessible, I’m forced to live in my disability,” Bonds says in the video…

April 16, 2023 | Source: Women’s eNews
With the summer months fast approaching in the Northern Hemisphere, it is again time to plan vacation travel. But for people with disabilities, this is no easy task. We are often met with numerous challenges, starting upon arrival at the airport. Four out of 10 travelers with disabilities have had their mobility aid lost or damaged by an airline, while six in 10 have experienced extended wait times for mobility assistance at the airport before and after a flight. In fact, during the first quarter of 2021, airlines reported 712 mishandled wheelchairs or scooters — which amounts to almost eight per day…

Shane Burcaw and his wife Hannah are known as “Squirmy and Grubs” on their YouTube channel and other social media platforms. Travis Jecker’s life changed in the blink of an eye. “I was injured on a motorcycle 18 years ago, just simply went over the bars, casual accident,” said Jecker. This didn’t stop his adventurous soul. He founded Positive Ride to give others the chance to break physical boundaries. “People get trapped into that: ‘you’re disabled and you can’t do anything,’ and that’s so not true, the most important thing is you can do whatever you want, and if you put your mind to it, it’ll happen,” added Jecker…
5 ways to make workplaces more accessible for employees with long COVID-19
April 19, 2023 | Source: Fast Company
Since 2020, more than 16 million Americans have developed long COVID-19. The often debilitating condition causes exhaustion, cognitive impairment, sensitivity to light, and susceptibility to infection, among dozens of other symptoms. There is currently no cure, making it hard for many people to return to work without accommodations. According to an analysis of worker compensation claims in New York state between January 2020 and March 2022, around 71% of long COVID-19 sufferers experienced symptoms that kept them out of work or required treatment for more than six months…

Recently, a business in Greenville, North Carolina has provided another challenge. Stevenson said he visited Insomnia Cookies on a Friday night earlier this month with his service dog Sean, like he’s done numerous times before. However, this time was different after an assistant manager denied him access due to their “no pets” policy…
John Fetterman wants to “pay it forward” by speaking openly about his depression
April 20, 2023 | Source: NPR
Sen. John Fetterman acknowledges there was a time not that long ago, when he didn’t want to talk about depression — at all. Now, the Pennsylvania Democrat, who returned to the U.S. Senate this week after taking leave in mid-February to seek treatment for clinical depression, says it’s his responsibility to “pay it forward” with candor about the disease. “I thought every night when I was laying in bed when I was in the hospital — like what if I just would have done something about this before, and I could kick myself and I just think about how my family wouldn’t [have been] put through it and my constituents,” he told NPR’s Scott Detrow…

April 20, 2023 | Source: Warwick Post
Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston) has introduced legislation requiring health insurers to provide home accessibility coverage for accessible modifications to homes in certain circumstances. April 20, 2023 | Source: Allure
Growing up in New York City, Jillian Mercado used to love being “a fly on the wall,” she says. “Me, outspoken? Never. Absolutely not. I rode the wave, always saying, ‘It is what it is.’ I didn’t want to stir anything up or cause any chaos.” Today, the model, activist, and star of The L Word: Generation Q cherishes being seen. “There is a lot of work to be done and I benefit from having the privilege of being very outspoken,” says Mercado. A wheelchair user due to muscular dystrophy, Mercado is among the first wave of those to break the stigma that taints the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries when it comes to those with disabilities…

Not enough people wear hearing aids, experts say. Doing so could reduce dementia
April 14, 2023 | Source: CNN- UK
Treating hearing loss could mean reducing the risk for dementia, according to a new study. Hearing loss may increase the risk for dementia, but using hearing aids lowered the risk so it’s similar to those without hearing loss, according to the study published Thursday in The Lancet. Researchers followed more than 437,000 people in a cohort from the UK Biobank, a large biomedical database and research resource that follows residents long term. They looked at each person’s risk for dementia, self-reported use of hearing aids and medical records to see if the person developed dementia, the study said…

The 28-year-old used to rely on wheelchair accessible taxis for work, medical appointments and social outings, but now uses her own van to avoid wait times. “When I want to go out and I don’t have a support worker to drive my van, I still rely on taxis,” Ms Tobin said…
Accessible tourist sites in Jordan remain a distant goal, say activists
April 16, 2023 | Source: Jordan Times- Jordan
Jordan’s tourist attractions remain largely inaccessible for people with disabilities, propelling a “persistent demand” from activists to prioritise accessibility. Despite the authorities’ efforts to improve mobility for persons with disabilities, many solutions are “temporary and short-term”. This has led to persons with disabilities being denied certain rights such as accessing tourist sites and public beaches, according to activists. Despite some progress, there remains a need for sustainable and long-term solutions to ensure that Jordan’s public spaces can be equally enjoyed by all…

Disability: Making hybrid working accessible for all
April 17, 2023 | Source: Personnel Today- UK
Hybrid working is often hailed as important for the inclusion of disabled employees, but as Rachel Murray points out, it is only successful if organisations challenge themselves to do better and ask workers about their needs. An increase in remote working has helped many companies explore what is possible in terms of providing flexibility while maintaining productivity. This presents opportunities for greater accessibility, benefiting groups such as parents, those with caring responsibilities and those with disabilities…
How cognitive diversity in AI can help close the disability inclusion gap
April 17, 2023 | Source: The World Economic Forum- EU
Unemployment among people with disabilities is as high as 80% in some countries, making them among the most marginalized groups when it comes to work. Those who are employed often face unequal hiring and promotion standards, unequal pay for equal work, and occupational segregation, which makes it difficult to close the disability inclusion gap. Indeed, the cost of excluding people with disabilities represents up to 7% of the gross domestic product in some countries. A disability-inclusive business strategy, by contrast, could lead to 28% higher revenue and 30% higher profit margins…

Player’s Own Voice podcast: One of world’s top wheelchair rugby players also champions accessibility

When a team athlete is named MVP over and over again, that’s saying something about their ability to lift everyone’s game around them. Zak Madell, one of the world’s best wheelchair rugby players, has owned that MVP distinction almost since the day— a dozen years ago — he first got into his notoriously rock ’em sock, ’em sport. Madell is as effective an advocate for the power of sport as you’ll ever meet, loud and clear and persuasive on the many ways that sport, adaptive or otherwise, has enriched his life. Seeking out, encouraging, and drafting new players is an ongoing passion for Madell…

However, the reality is that many individuals with reduced mobility face significant challenges in navigating daily life. Accessibility is essential for everyone, not just for people with reduced mobility. It empowers individuals to break through barriers that limit their potential and creates an environment that enhances convenience and opportunity…

I remember it like it was yesterday. It was 2018 and I had just taken my seat at Christopher Bailey’s final runway show for Burberry when Sinéad Burke, one of this era’s crucial fashion disruptors, as well as an enthralling conversationalist, made her way across to me with a look of purpose in her eye. I knew from the moment we first spoke that we would go on to work together. Soon, we photographed Sinéad for the magazine to spotlight her activism at the axis of disability and fashion, before she became a contributing editor and later was chosen as one of the Duchess of Sussex’s Forces for Change for the September 2019 cover…
