200,000 individuals who are Blind or Visually Impaired in NYC will be able to Vote
October 9, 2023 | Source: Our Town
There are 200,000 visually impaired or blind individuals who will be able to vote in the upcoming November elections thanks to new tech innovations that are available at ever polling place in the city. The technology has actually been around for years, but Ariel Merkel, the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) coordinator for the NYC Board of Elections said many visually impaired and blind individuals are still not aware how easy it can be for them to vote. “It provides voters with disabilities the ability to mark their ballot privately and independently,” stated Merkel on September 26 during a presentation on the accessibility of voting at the Lighthouse Guild.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana (USAO) and Indiana Disability Rights (IDR) are partnering to survey the accessibility of early polling sites for 2023 General Election. The project, “Access the Vote,” uses survey results to inform County Clerks about individualized solutions to ensure their polling places are accessible to voters with disabilities. IDR has conducted accessibility surveys, based on the United States Department of Justice’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Checklist for Polling Places, during early voting in several primary and general elections…

AT&T and Gallaudet University unveil a football helmet for deaf and hard of hearing quarterbacks
October 4, 2023 | Source: ABC
AT&T and Gallaudet University have developed a football helmet for players who are deaf or hard of hearing and communicate using American Sign Language. The company and Washington-based school for students who are deaf or hard of hearing unveiled the new technology Thursday. It allows a coach to call a play on a tablet from the sideline that then shows up visually on a small display screen inside the quarterback’s helmet. Gallaudet, which competes in Division III, was cleared by the NCAA to use the helmet in its game on Saturday at home against Hilbert…
Twitter/X’s removal of link headlines slashes site accessibility even further
October 6, 2023 | Source: Mashable
Once again, Elon Musk’s design decisions for the rebranded X (formerly Twitter) are isolating users with disabilities — this time in the name of “esthetics.” On Wednesday evening, the site began rolling out a new preview format for posted links, which removes all headlines and subheader text from the post in favor of displaying only the article’s header image overlaid with a publication’s watermark. While Musk and his team might view the minimalist change as a step towards a sleeker version of the site, it also removes essential information for users considering clicking on third-party links…
New U.S. Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines Arrive as Cities Focus on Walkability
October 6, 2023 | Source: National League of Cities
Walking is the second most common mode of transportation for Americans with disabilities, outpacing public transportation by a factor of four. Despite this, an average of 65 percent of curb ramps and 48 percent of sidewalks across the country were not fully accessible to those who struggle with mobility. However, cities are updating more infrastructure which includes accessibility updates, and also, realtors and developers are prioritizing accessibility using “walk scores” and other neighborhood amenities as ways to increase value in both urban and suburban neighborhoods by an average of 23.5 percent…
City puts accessibility at the forefront of disability data
October 6, 2023 | Source: Route Fifty
City officials often spend much of their day on their computers, juggling emails or hopping on virtual meetings. But as an official with a disability, Amy Nieves said it can be hard to navigate an office’s online environment. When Nieves, who is deaf in one ear, first started working as Philadelphia’s executive director of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities in 2021, she said the platform staff used for virtual meetings didn’t even have accessible features like closed captioning enabled…
Check off the bucket list: Woman flies in first wheelchair-accessible hot air balloon at Balloon Fiesta
October 9, 2023 | Source: KOAT
Balloon Fiesta is a magical place — that’s what one woman who got to fly in a hot air balloon for the first time said. This is the first year there was a wheelchair-accessible hot air balloon available at Balloon Fiesta. This gives many the opportunity to fly, including Henrietta Vaughn. Flying in an air balloon has been on her bucket list for the past 20 years. “It was really just magical. You went up in the air and didn’t feel a thing,” Vaughn said. “It was fantastic, and the ride was great. Anybody my age, don’t fear it.”…
A new camp makes the outdoors accessible for deaf, deafblind, hard-of-hearing kids
October 9, 2023 | Source: MPR News
Riyan Hassan has spent the past two days playing in the August sun, running around Fort Snelling and exploring nature along the Mississippi River with new friends who speak the same language she does: American Sign Language, or ASL. “I like this camp because it’s so much fun!” It’s Riyan’s first time at a camp like this, designed for youth who are deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing. She doesn’t have friends outside camp who know ASL, so it’s been exciting. “Because I like people sign,” she says…
Philadelphia attempts to put accessibility at the forefront of disability data
October 10, 2023 | Source: City & State PA & Government Technology
City officials often spend much of their day on their computers, juggling emails or hopping on virtual meetings – and for those with a disability, the challenges of navigating such an online environment can be exacerbated by accessibility – or the lack thereof. When Amy Nieves, who is deaf in one ear, first started working as Philadelphia’s executive director of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities in 2021, she recalled, the platform that staff used for virtual meetings didn’t even have accessible features like the ability to enable closed captioning…
Bill aims to make arts more accessible, inclusive
October 10, 2023 | Source: The Daily News
Arts and culture institutions that want to make their programs more accessible for people with disabilities but are hamstrung by a lack of financial resources called on state lawmakers Tuesday to create a grant program to address the funding gap. Vast swaths of Massachusetts residents who have disabilities, including artists themselves and consumers, are unable to fully participate in arts and cultural opportunities due to barriers tied to accessing venues and program offerings, Emily Ruddock, executive director of advocacy organization MASSCreative, said during a legislative hearing…
Target class action claims website not equally accessible to blind, low-vision customers
October 11, 2023 | Source: Top Class Actions
Target Corporation is facing a class action lawsuit claiming its website is not accessible to consumers who are blind or have low vision. The Target website has several issues that lead those using screen readers to have less access to the full website than other users. That includes not having certain links and/or buttons on the website described adequately so the process of browsing the website is trial and error, the lawsuit claims. “When digital content is properly formatted, it is universally accessible to everyone,” the Target website class action says…
Sen. John Fetterman Points Out 1 Huge Benefit Of Being Disabled
October 11, 2023 | Source: HuffPost
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) is woke — at least when it comes to the systemic issues that hold disabled people back from fully engaging in society. During an interview on “The Late Show” Wednesday, host Stephen Colbert asked the senator about the assistive technology he was using during their chat. In 2022, Fetterman had a near-fatal stroke just days before his landslide win in the Democratic primary that year. Since his recovery, Fetterman has relied on closed-captioning technology on a laptop or tablet that helps with the auditory processing issues that resulted from his stroke…

Under this agreement, former players who have been deemed permanently disabled by the Social Security Administration will be able to keep benefits provided by the federal government along with benefits provided by the league. Most former players who are permanently disabled receive $11,500 a month under the league’s benefits plan, according to The New York Times…

October 6, 2023 | Source: Travel Weekly- UK
Last month, the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) released its Airline Digital Accessibility Report, which was authored by myself and our team of experts at Hassell Inclusion. It reviewed the websites of 11 airlines with the highest passenger numbers from UK airports, rating them in terms of their technical accessibility as well as their ease of use for making bookings for people with disabilities. The results were a combination of scores for the airlines’ compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, and feedback from a focus group of consumers with accessibility needs on their experiences of navigating the websites and booking flights…

Samantha Estoesta is a project manager of social innovation specialization at TD, working out of Communitech in Kitchener. Estoesta suffers from chronic migraines and describes them as debilitating. It’s not uncommon for her to have to take medication just to make it through the workday. “There’s some days where I would need a sick day because it was just too painful,” Estoesta said…

EnChroma glasses, which are designed to enhance colour perception, will allow colour-blind individuals to perceive artwork in a way that they may never have been able to before…
Alberta advocate urges Halloween accessibility for all children
October 6, 2023 | Source: Globalnews- Canada
Halloween is almost upon us and soon trick-or-treaters will head to the streets for a hauntingly good time. But not all the little ghouls and goblins will be able to take part unless people make changes to their candy setup. “Barriers such as stairs, closed doors, nighttime, even cold can make Halloween inaccessible and the trick or treating experience inaccessible,” explained Rich Padulo. He’s the co-founder of Treat Accessibly, a grassroots initiative to make Halloween more inclusive for children with mobility challenges and special needs…
Derry wheelchair user says lack of drop kerbs at bus stops ‘affecting accessibility’
October 7, 2023 | Source: Belfast Telegraph- Ireland
A wheelchair user from Londonderry has said that the lack of drop kerbs at bus stops along one of the main roads into the city is “affecting the accessibility” of public transport for disabled people. The man, who does not wish to be named, lives on Colby Avenue near the main Culmore Road leading into the city and has lived there for the past 30 years. Recently he was unable to use his car and was forced to use public transport for daily journeys only to discover just how challenging that was…
I use a wheelchair — how will I find my first flight in 11 years?
October 8, 2023 | Source: The Times- UK
I knew, as I sat at the departure gate eyeing up the big, shiny plane on the tarmac, the journey facing me was going to be challenging and very possibly humiliating. I was nervous. I hadn’t flown for yonks. The last time, to my nephew’s wedding 11 years ago, was an ordeal. The whole process, from the security officers at Charles de Gaulle airport — who tried to make me stand so they could search me — to the rush, the indignity and my husband’s chronic stress levels, was such that I decided never again…

Making elections accessible for everyone
October 9, 2023 | Source: The Spinoff- New Zealand
When Neelu Jennings decided to run for parliament she knew she couldn’t do it alone. The disability advocate, who is campaigning for the Green Party in the Hutt South electorate, is legally blind and has no sense of balance following a brain injury. This makes it hard for her to be oriented. “I struggle to find an event unless someone helps me find it,” she says. “The big barrier with accessibility is the amount of energy it takes: instead of going from A to B in a straight line, as a disabled person you go up and around, over and under and through to navigate around barriers.”…
Analysis finds local councils and NHS webpages impede access for users with impaired vision
October 9, 2023 | Source: THIIS Magazine- UK
Research by NEC Digital has found council websites had the least accessibility errors in an analysis of public sector webpages. However, an average of nine errors still remained across public sector sites, potentially locking out users with access needs. According to Purple, almost nine million people in the UK have accessibility needs, and around 3 million people are colourblind, which can make accessing digital services more difficult. Accessibility is especially important when it comes to public sector and healthcare websites, when visitors may be in search of vital information…
A local business’s guide to creating an accessible web design
October 9, 2023 | Source: The Singleton Argus- Australia
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) defines web accessibility as websites, tools and technologies designed for use by everyone, including people with disabilities. This philosophy, which has gained traction in recent years, encompasses all forms of disabilities and respects everyone’s right to be informed and express themselves through the internet. Guaranteeing such rights has become more crucial than ever. A report released by the Australian Communications and Media Authority in 2021 noted an 11 per cent increase in active broadband connections and a 20 per cent increase in data traffic compared to the previous year…
Sustainable accessibility at events
October 9, 2023 | Source: Access All Areas- UK
Attitude is Everything (AIE) founder Suzanne Bull MBE says the idea of engaging disabled people more with environmental solutions came about during lockdown when she feared for the disabled community being “left behind” in sustainability conversations. “I felt the disabled community was being pitted against people who were really fighting for better climate change solutions. I felt there was a danger of disabled people being left behind, and they already were because the pandemic had a very drastic impact on the disabled community.”…
Wheelchair-accessible dental clinic opens in Nova Scotia
October 9, 2023 | Source: Global News- Canada
Getting dental work with a disability became easier on Sunday with the opening of what’s believed to be the first wheelchair accessible clinic in Nova Scotia. TranscenDental Group at Waverley Road is fully wheelchair accessible, with a lift to transfer patients to the dental chair. Previously those in a wheelchair would have to manually slide from their wheelchair to the dental chair. The process isn’t for everyone, forcing some, if able, to get their dental work done from their wheelchair…
NHS and local council webpages are found to impede access for users with visual impairments
October 9, 2023 | Source: Assistive Technology- UK
A recent report by NEC Digital has revealed that there is a growing call for continued government focus on enhancing web accessibility across the public sector, which may include increased investment in website accessibility or tighter regulations. NEC Digital analysed over 1,300 websites across local authorities, social housing, and healthcare to assess how accessible these websites were for a user initially trying to access the site. Looking at the number of errors, contrast errors and accessibility alerts on the page, each website was assigned an ‘accessibility score’ out of 10…
South Moravia Turns To Wheelchair Users To Test Accessibility in Tourist Sites
October 10, 2023 | Source: Brno Daily- Czech Republic
Travelling can involve lots of added stress for people who use wheelchairs, as well as parents with prams or people with reduced mobility, as often they have to travel to unknown places not knowing whether the place is easily accessible for them. The South Moravian Tourism Centre has been working to make the region a more friendly place for the less mobile, and as part of this project, they sent wheelchair users to test selected tourist destinations for themselves. The idea was also supported by the CzechTourism agency, which has also been promoting accessible tourism…

October 10, 2023 | Source: Gulf News- Dubai
All new buildings coming up in Dubai will have to be accessible for all and secure a special seal that certifies them as friendly for people of determination. Dubai Municipality on Tuesday announced the ‘Wosool’ seal for building permits and building completion certificates in the emirate, which confirms the buildings comply with the standards for people of determination as a key requirement for approving permits. The conditions for buildings friendly to people of determination include doors designed for easy access, suitable ramps for entrances and exits, health facilities, and dedicated rooms for people of determination…
Accessibility issues a barrier to voting
October 11, 2023 | Source: Wairarapa Times-Age- New Zealand
Some people with mobility issues in Greytown, Featherston, and rural areas of Wairarapa may be prevented from casting their vote due to accessibility issues at local voting centres. The Electoral Commission website’s list of where to find accessible sites shows no fully accessible voting centres in Featherston, Greytown and several rural communities around Wairarapa. CCS Disability Action access advisor for the central region Raewyn Hailes said she is concerned about the accessibility problems hindering people’s human right to move about independently and exercise their democratic right to vote…
