Section 504 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in public and private programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance, including schools and postsecondary institutions…
What makes a parish ‘accessible’?
May 6, 2022 | Source: The Pillar
One of the most important missions of the local parish is modeling the family love which the baptized are called to share, reflecting God’s love for each one of his children. As part of that mission, parishes often have conversations about “accessibility” and “inclusivity” for Catholics with disabilities. But what does it mean to be an accessible and welcoming parish for persons with disabilities? Is it even right to think in terms of “welcoming” people who, by every right, should consider the parish their home in the first place?…

U.S. Tennis Association Seeks to Dismiss Disability Bias Suit
May 9, 2022 | Source: Bloomberg Law
The U.S. Tennis Association asked the Southern District of New York to toss a lawsuit claiming that its website violates the Americans with Disabilities Act, saying the plaintiff is a serial litigant who files “cut and paste complaints.” Robert Weekes’ suit alleges the USTA website fails to make accommodations for the visually impaired, in violation of the ADA and New York City Human Rights Law. He seeks to have the case certified as a class action. But Weekes has “filed a staggering 79 nearly identical” complaints, “unleashing a tsunami of meritless litigation in this district, and perverting the very purposes …

Louise Andrews: I watched male loved ones deny their hearing loss. Left untreated, it devastated their lives.
May 11, 2022 | Source: Chicago Tribune
Purging closets bursting with hideous ties reminded me of how difficult it is to “gift” a father with something of value on Father’s Day. I had a very close relationship with my father and both grandfathers, who supported and protected me always. Fatherly and grandfatherly support is a profound gift for any daughter or granddaughter. I am eternally grateful for these mentors and wish their loving influence had persisted longer. All my fathers had excellent longevity. But what could have helped them to live even longer, more engaged and fuller lives?…

Before setting off to improve usability, government digital asset design and development staff must understand what the term really means…

The alarm bells started going off for Allison Galloway when she watched her son, Logan, play. She’d see other kids running up and down stairs and flying down slides on the playground, yet Logan was cautious with every step. When Galloway handed her son a toy, it would take him a little too long to reach for it. Multiple eyecare providers told Galloway that Logan was too young for vision testing. Yet when he was 2 years old, Galloway took him to a specialist who diagnosed Logan with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a type of inherited retinal disease (IRD)…

Dr. Brian Sims entered the delivery room and gently explained that babies born so early likely won’t live. He told Butler he could keep them comfortable as they died. But she pleaded through tears: “Give my twins a chance to survive.” And he did. Until recently, trying to save babies born this early would have been futile…

Master gene that can restore hearing loss discovered
May 12, 2022 | Source: The Statesman & Longevity
In a breakthrough, US scientists have discovered a single master gene that programs ear hair cells into either outer or inner ones, overcoming a major hurdle that had prevented the development of these cells to restore hearing. Hearing loss due to aging, noise, and certain cancer therapy drugs and antibiotics has been irreversible to date because scientists have not been able to reprogram existing cells to develop into the outer and inner ear sensory cells — essential for hearing – once they die…

Dame Evelyn Glennie: Hitting the right note with inclusion
May 8, 2022 | Source: The Press & Journal- UK
As with many disabilities, deafness is poorly understood in general. For instance, there is a common misconception that deaf people live in a world of silence. Only a handful of the several hundred articles and reviews written about me every year accurately describe my hearing impairment. More than 90% are so inaccurate that you would be forgiven for thinking that it is impossible for me to be a musician. But I am the first musician to maintain a full-time career as a solo percussionist, which still confounds many…

In a update shared on Monday, the DfE said: “[We have] added a version of ‘SEND review: right support, right place, right time’ in British sign language and easy-read format…

The European Accessibility Act: Everything You Need To Know
May 11, 2022 | Source: Forbes- Europe
The average abled person takes their ability to use mobile devices and computers for granted. The story is different for the 135 million people with a disability in the EU, who face access barriers to these products and services. The European Accessibility Act (EAA) is the European commission’s answer to this problem of marginalization. The EAA was derived from the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). In a progressive step, this directive aims to enhance the way products and services are rendered across the EU by synchronizing accessibility rules for all member states…

The new law, passed unanimously, was supposed to make Ontario fully accessible to people with disabilities by 2025…
