Accessible Birding for Every Body
May 13, 2021 | Source: Bay Nature
When I started birding in 2005, I went on each and every Golden Gate Audubon Society bird walk that I could: the rolling terrain of Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, the meadows of Yosemite, the wild hills of the Sierras, the special patches in Golden Gate Park, any opportunity to see and learn about birds from some of the best birders in the area. But gradually my body started to switch gears, and after experiencing more and more unexplained, painful, and humiliating falls, I finally got the answer in 2012 when I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)…

Make it easy to see, touch and voice control your iPhone: How to make your phone accessible
May 15, 2021 | Source: USA TODAY
I have a friend who is 75-years old and has Parkinson’s disease. He’s also crazy about his iPhone and tech in general, and eager to buy the latest and greatest gadgets to hit the market. More importantly, his smartphone is his lifeline to the outside world. He uses it for watching and reading news – one of his favorite pastimes – and for keeping up with the world around him. He also goes straight to his smartphone to order food delivery, use car services like Lyft and Uber, and contact people in emergencies. And he’s generally really good at it all…

In a survey of 800 people with disabilities (visual, hearing, cognitive, or speech) in the US and UK, 98% of respondents said they consume media of all kinds — but the experience is not necessarily a good one despite technology’s strides in improving accessibility. 54% of respondents said they use an assistive tool to help read, view, or listen to content…

GOP Voting Restrictions Will Make It Harder For People With Disabilities To Cast Ballots
May 17, 2021 | Source: HuffPost
Americans with disabilities were more satisfied than ever with their voting experiences during the 2020 elections as a raft of changes meant to make elections safer during the COVID-19 pandemic made casting ballots easier for a population that has struggled for decades to easily access polling sites. But a wave of voting restrictions that Republicans have proposed or already passed across the country is threatening to not just halt that progress but significantly reverse it…
Making technology accessible for people with disabilities will end up making life easier for everyone
May 18, 2021 | Source: The Dallas Morning News
Have you ever noticed the ramps at a street corner? These are called curb cuts. The initial purpose was to allow wheelchairs to cross the street. The curb cut ended up helping a lot more people: parents pushing strollers, travelers pulling luggage, skateboarders flying, bikers riding and workers carrying heavy loads. Making websites, digital products and content accessible to those with disabilities has a curb cut effect. Captioning is the best example of this. Many people think captioned videos are for the deaf and hard of hearing…

A disabled president’s memorial still isn’t fully accessible to disabled visitors, a new report finds
May 19, 2021 | Source: SF Gate
My 6-year-old noticed the raised dots first. My family was playing tourist on a recent weekend, making our way from one monument on the National Mall to another, and we decided to start our walk at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. What followed was a conversation that has no doubt taken place countless times in front of that wall…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
