Pennsylvania has a new system in place to provide a more accessible vote-by-mail option for voters with visual disabilities. The technology, called OmniBallot, follows a lawsuit during the primary election and gives voters the ability to complete ballots themselves on a computer before mailing it in. Almost 270,000 voting-age Pennsylvanians are blind or have serious difficulty seeing even while wearing glasses, according to 2019 U.S. Census data. But according to the Pennsylvania Department of State [DOS], only 50 voters with disabilities had requested the use of OmniBallot as of Oct. 27…

Microsoft’s Xbox Website Allegedly Violates ADA
October 30, 2020 | Source: Law Street Media
On Thursday in the Southern District of New York, Microsoft was sued in a putative class-action complaint by the plaintiff, “a visually-impaired and legally blind person who requires screen-reading software to read website content using his computer,” who alleged that Microsoft failed to have an accessible website for its Xbox under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Specifically, the plaintiff brought this suit for Microsoft’s purported “failure to design, construct, maintain, and operate its website to be fully accessible to and independently usable by Plaintiff and other blind or visually-impaired people.”…
How masks have become a communication barrier for the deaf community
October 30, 2020 | Source: CBS42
Lip reading has become a helpful tool for the deaf community. So, when it was time to put on the masks, members of the deaf community like Paul Saunders felt they’ve lost connection with others. “I can’t hear them,” Paul Saunders, a member of the deaf community said. “I can’t see what they’re saying, so I don’t really know what to say.” Saunders is the principal at the Alabama School for the Deaf. He himself was born deaf. “Normally if we did not have masks in the past, I can catch some of what they’re saying on their lips,” Saunders said….

Five Ways to Plan for More Accessible Housing
November 2, 2020 | Source: American Planning Association- Steven Wright
In a nation based on a constitution that guarantees equality for all, decades of planning and land-use policy has created inequity. Everything from single-family zoning with large minimum lot sizes that made homeownership impossible for many people of color, to shameful, insidious practices such as redlining lending in predominantly African American communities, has widened the chasm between haves and have nots. Even the automobile — that great tool for middle-class community work, expanding suburban homebuilding and vastly growing tourism — was weaponized against minority communities…
“Deaf U” Explores The Realities Of Deaf Culture And College Life
November 1, 2020 | Source: The Greyhound
“Deaf U,” a new Netflix documentary, follows the students of Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. Unlike other universities, Gallaudet is set up to accommodate students who are either deaf or hard of hearing. On their website, Gallaudet notes how they are “the only university where students live and learn in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.” At Gallaudet, students have all of the opportunities that a typical university offers, such as honors programs and study abroad, with the support of a community that understands deaf culture…
How accessible is pandemic-era digital theater for artists with disabilities?
November 2, 2020 | Source: SF Chronicle Datebook
As I prepared to listen to the first episode of Aurora Theatre Company’s audio drama “The Flats,” I turned off my lights, hid my laptop’s screen and began letting fade away all the visual data my eyes were feeding my brain. Then I thought, “This is comforting and relatively novel for me, a sighted person. But what’s it like for a blind or low-vision audience member?” As the pandemic has prompted much theater to go digital, my own very unscientific survey suggests an attempt to make shows more accessible to audiences with disabilities — and not just mobility disabilities…
A New Rule Means Some People With Wheelchairs Can’t Fly On American Airlines
November 2, 2020 | Source: NPR
John Morris calls himself an “aviation geek.” He’s a frequent flyer who, in his power wheelchair, has traveled to 46 countries. His goal is to visit every country. “I love air travel,” he says. From takeoff and to the way the engines cut off right before touchdown, “that joy that I get from that is just so incredible.” After a car crash in 2012 that resulted in a triple amputation, Morris kept flying. He also started a website called Wheelchair Travel and hosts a travel podcast. Now a new policy from one airline could limit the ability of some people such as Morris to fly…
How Children’s Media Network Moonbug Delivers Developmentally Appropriate, Accessible Content To All Children, All Over The World
November 2, 2020 | Source: Forbes
Although PBS may be synonymous with children’s programming, the addressable audience is not theirs alone. There are other players that fill the space as well—not so much to compete in the Business 101 sense, but to enrich and diversify options for children’s entertainment. This includes providing shows catering to children with disabilities. Moonbug is one such player. The London-based network was founded in 2018 by René Rechtman and John Robson, and focuses on digital content for children aged 8 and younger…
Special education teacher explains why she wants to be called ‘accessibility specialist’
November 2, 2020 | Source: Good Morning America
One teacher has decided to change her title and has a powerful message to go along with the switch. McAlister Greiner Huynh is a teacher in Raleigh, North Carolina. “I teach a self-contained adapted curriculum elementary classroom, serving disabled students K-5,” she told “Good Morning America.” “I am passionate about radical acceptance and disability pride.” In a recent Instagram post, Huynh announced that instead of “special education” teacher, she will call herself an “accessibility specialist.”…
Furthering the Promise: Equal Access to Childcare- United States V. Nobel Learning Communities, Inc.
November 2, 2020 | Source: U.S. Department of Justice
Despite being thirty years after the enactment of the ADA, many children with disabilities and their families continue to face discrimination in child-care programs. This discrimination includes outright intentional exclusion, architectural and communication barriers, failure to make modifications to existing practices, and exclusionary qualification standards and criteria. The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorney’s Offices are committed to ensuring that children with disabilities and their families enjoy equal access to child-care programs, free from all forms of disability discrimination…
Why emerging tech supports an accessible, inclusive future workplace
November 4, 2020 | Source: HR Dive
Emerging technologies — augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) — will play a crucial role in creating an accessible future of work for individuals with disabilities, according to experts. Remote work environments amid the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of workplace technology trends. “What should have happened in five years, happened in a couple of months,” Cathy Hackl, a futurist and author of “The Augmented Workforce,” said during a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) webinar Oct. 20…

Kyra Wade’s favorite color is pink. The 11-year-old likes road trips and the movie “Monsters, Inc.” She loves to watch people laugh. Her culinary preferences run to noodles and rice. Beyond that, her parents don’t know much about her needs and wants. Kyra is autistic and profoundly deaf. She was born premature at about 27 weeks, just a little over 2 pounds, which has impacted pretty much everything: eyesight, hearing, digestion, sleep patterns. Meet the deaf and blind chef who just landed his dream job at a Marine base
November 5, 2020 | Source: Task & Purpose
Every day in the mess hall kitchen at San Diego’s Marine Corps Recruit Depot, a culinary team of nearly 30 cooks turns out more than 9,000 meals, making it the Corps’ highest-volume mess hall in the nation. Working in that high-pressure kitchen requires training, discipline, flexibility and an exceptional work ethic — which are skills that have made newcomer Kevin Tong a standout since he joined the galley crew last week. But there’s something else that makes the 39-year-old San Diegan unique among his fellow cooks at MCRD. He is deaf and blind…

COVID-19 amplifies challenges for those with disabilities, chronic illnesses
November 5, 2020 | Source: The Cavalier Daily
One in four American adults has a disability, according to the CDC. Given the prevalence of disability and chronic illness in the United States, the coronavirus pandemic has magnified the inequalities in accessibility that persist in U.S. society. These disparities are reflected in a higher coronavirus mortality rate for those with disabilities, but also in the everyday barriers that those with disabilities experience, such as difficulties with lip-reading because of mask-wearing and remote therapy services…

Researchers use new techniques to make films more accessible to visually impaired audiences
October 30, 2020 | Source: Medical Express- UK
Researchers have used new techniques to make films more accessible to visually impaired audiences. The project, led by the University of York and Anglia Ruskin University, used enhanced sound techniques, first person narration and spatial audio, to produce an alternative to traditional audio description (AD), which relies on third-person narration. Rather than being an after-thought, developing AD should be integrated into the film-making process to ensure that it is aligned with the artistic vision of filmmakers and improve the cinematic experiences of visually impaired audiences, the researchers suggest…

Food packaging — why is it so important?
November 2, 2020 | Source: Hospital Healthcare- Australia
Food packaging can be a barrier to quality nutrition. If a consumer at home, hospital patient, or a resident within an aged care facility can’t open the food packaging, then they can’t eat the food; it’s as simple as that. Research conducted in NSW Hospitals showed that over 80% of elderly patients experienced difficulties or were unable to open one or more food packaging items1. These difficulties can include requiring a utensil to open packaging with consequent spillage and mess, not to mention the increased risk of hand injuries…

#AccessibilityChampion – Disabled in a road accident, George Thomas now helps fellow accident survivors
November 1, 2020 | Source: Newz Hook- India
Trivandrum based George K Thomas became a wheelchair user after he met with a road accident in his 20s. That incident has made him a passionate advocate for road safety and accessibility of public places. It’s called Freedom on Wheels and the name aptly sums up George K Thomas’ mission in life. That is to make all of India accessible for wheelchair users. In 2005 George, then 23 years old, was disabled in a road accident. His bike collided with an auto and his spinal cord was severely damaged. He became a wheelchair user. He realised the challenges people with disabilities face when it comes to accessing public places…
As deadline looms, expert says businesses are ‘just starting’ to take digital accessibility more seriously
November 2, 2020 | Source: ITBusiness- Canada
Canadian businesses face a January 1, 2021 deadline to make all internet websites and web content more accessible, and experts are urging Canadian businesses to take a hard look at their web presence and take the deadline seriously. The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requires organizations with 20 or more employees to file a compliance audit* before this deadline. AODA will require Canadian businesses in Ontario to meet web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.0) Level AA other than criteria 1.2.4 (live captions) and 1.2.5 (pre-recorded audio descriptions)…

Purple Tuesday call for retailers to act to make it easier for disabled people to buy online
November 3, 2020 | Source: Internet Retailing- UK
Shopping has become harder for disabled people both online and in-store during the Covid-19 pandemic, new research has found. Now retailers are now being urged to act in order to make websites and apps easier to use by people who are often looking to buy the essentials. Purple, the organisation behind today’s Purple Tuesday event highlighting the importance of accessibility for disabled shoppers both online and in-store, is asking retailers to make simple changes to improve access to the goods and services they sell…
Making the Europeana collections website accessible to all
November 3, 2020 | Source: Europeana Pro- Europe
When we started working on the new Europeana collections website in 2019, we discussed web accessibility as an important criterion. All European public sector websites should be accessible according to the European Web Accessibility Directive. Web accessibility means that websites, tools and technologies are designed and developed so that people with disabilities can use them. Or, in other words: people can perceive, understand, navigate and interact with the web. And in addition, they can also contribute to the web (see Introduction to Web Accessibility, W3C)…
When spaces are made accessible for disabled people, everyone benefits
November 3, 2020 | Source: Metro- UK
I have a confession: I seem to have fallen out of love with London, something I never thought would (or even could) happen. Having moved to the Big Smoke almost nine years ago to follow my dreams and live independently, I imagined spending the rest of my adult life here, but that vision doesn’t seem so clear nowadays. Don’t get me wrong, I still get a flutter in my belly when I drive past Big Ben, or have the honour of being invited to the Houses of Parliament (which totally looks like Hogwarts inside by the way) and I’m often astounded by how much London has to offer 24/7…

About Access offers guidance on the relevant provisions of the legislation, which applies to businesses, clubs, associations and public, voluntary and community sector organisations. Breaching the law can be costly, not only in terms of fines levied, lost business and expensive building adjustments but also in damage to a hard-earned reputation…
Deafness in infancy can affect non-verbal communication, suggests new research
November 3, 2020 | Source: Medical Xpress- England
Psychologists at the University of Sheffield have found that deafness in infancy affects the development of their early communication skills, including non-verbal behaviors like pointing. Researchers found that deaf infants born into hearing families tended to engage less often in communicative behaviors that predict language development compared to their typically-hearing peers. They studied the infants’ use of five types of infant communication known to positively predict language development: show gestures, give gestures, index-finger pointing, communicative vocalization and word use…

Robert Zemeckis’s new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1983 children’s novel The Witches has been earning mixed reviews since its Oct. 22 premiere on HBO Max. The Disordered Eye review – do you need good eyesight to make great art?
November 4, 2020 | Source: The Guardian- UK
Even with the unavoidable flattening effect caused by seeing it through a television screen, Keith Salmon’s painting, Sunlight and Stones, Beinn a’Ghlo, strikes immediately at your eye and heart. It looks like the eternal essence of the thing – sunlight on stones, as it was, is now and shall be ever more. Moving through his other landscape paintings of the Scottish Highlands, it is as if you are moving through the hills and forests – not because they are hyper-realistic, but precisely because they are not. They capture the ineffable qualities of the place so beautifully, it is as if they wrap themselves around you and take you there…

How to remedy an unknown health condition that causes patients nausea, headaches and eye pain
November 5, 2020 | Source: Lifesly- Australia
An ophthalmologist has revealed the simple solution to a debilitating condition that affects about five percent of Australians. Pattern blinding is a neurological condition where people feel uncomfortable looking at certain patterns or designs. Symptoms of pattern blindness are headache, eye pain, photosensitivity and nausea is caused when the patterns ‘over-stimulate’ the visual cortex of the brain – where people process visual information. The president of Optometry Australia, Darrell Baker, said the condition is not widely known in society except among those who suffer from it…
Accessible banking features in 2020
November 5, 2020 | Source: Mozo- Australia
When talking about accessibility, our minds often turn to the physical world first – railings, ramps or signage, for example. Indeed, in the banking world, these more tangible features are present and often advertised the most when financial institutions promote themselves as ‘inclusive’ organisations. Accessibility in banking includes things like: having automated doors, ramp access and adequate space to use a wheelchair in bank branches, in-branch and ATM braille signage, audio-enable ATMs, banks cards with physical indicators, and larger font and high visibility…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
