Accessibility in the News — 5/5/2023.
Accessible housing is critical for individuals with disabilities to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Without appropriate housing, people with disabilities may face significant barriers that prevent them from fully participating in their communities. This includes obstacles such as stairs, narrow doorways, and inaccessible bathrooms that can limit their ability to move around their home or invite guests over. Accessible housing can provide people with disabilities the freedom and independence to perform everyday tasks with ease, such as cooking, cleaning, and using the bathroom, and promote greater social inclusion by allowing them to have visitors over. Furthermore, accessible housing can also increase the value of the property and make it attractive to a wider range of potential buyers or renters, thus benefiting the wider community.

April 28, 2023 | Source: HuffPost
In May 2022, disabled student Anja, 16, was in her school’s cafeteria, completely unaware that a student was headed toward her high school in Chicago with a gun. Fortunately, the police apprehended the armed student before an active shooting could break out. But Anja was terrified after hearing about the threat. She knew too well that, as a disabled student, she would not have been protected if that situation had escalated. “The next day, I kept looking over my shoulder because I couldn’t shake the feeling that something would happen again,” Anja told HuffPost in an email interview…

About a month prior, the rabbit — named Leela, after Futurama’s one-eyed heroine — received an injection through the white of her eyeball. Just outside the surgery room, Max Hodak, the CEO of Science Corp., stands in jeans and a black hoodie, cradling a laptop in the crook of his arm…

About half of U.S. adults say they’ve experienced loneliness, Dr. Vivek Murthy said in an 81-page report from his office. “We now know that loneliness is a common feeling that many people experience. Art needs to be accessible to everyone. There isn’t a cultural program director, general manager or organizational leader anywhere in Connecticut who disagrees or neglects to emphasize its importance. They also won’t deny that making sure all facilities, exhibits and shows are entirely accessible can be challenging. After all, accessibility refers to more than just people with physical challenges who require ramps, elevators and extra space for wheelchairs. There are also patrons with autism and other neurological and developmental disorders who need special considerations due to crowds, loud noises and bright lights, and those who require auditory and translation assistance…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
