Wichita State team developing app to help blind and visually impaired readers
July 10, 2021 | Source: Wichita Eagle
Imagine opening the newspaper and seeing the Sunday funnies replaced with just a paragraph of what characters were saying and no pictures. That’s the reality for the nearly 70,000 Kansans with some form of visual disability. Current approaches to making comics and graphic novels accessible rely on converting the written words into audio, ignoring all of the visual information contained in the strips. Now, a Wichita State University professor and one of his former students are trying to change that with an app…
She worked with hearing-impaired kindergartners for 22 years, but retiring teacher isn’t leaving her ‘Deaf life’
July 10, 2021 | Source: Bakersfield
When Robin Lindsey’s father died in 1989, it inspired in her, as it does many of us at such times, a reevaluation. She had been teaching grade school for a decade and a half, but now, with his passing, Lindsey wondered if perhaps an unfulfilled obligation, an unexpressed calling, still beckoned. Warren Jones was deaf. And he taught deaf children. In fact both of Lindsey’s parents were deaf. Her first language was not spoken English but Sign. Although she was not hearing-impaired herself, the deaf community was, in a very real sense, her community…
How the airline industry still refuses to accommodate disability
July 11, 2021 | Source: MSNBC
When her wheelchair was severely damaged during her flight on Delta Airlines from Minneapolis to Newark, New Jersey, the model and influencer Bri Scalesse took to TikTok and recorded a video that quickly went viral. “Today my freedom and independence was taken away,” she said. “I don’t know how I’m going to live my life.” Pretty much no one looks forward to airline travel. But if you’re a wheelchair user, flying isn’t just an inconvenience; it can be devastating…
In Focus: Northwestern theater students receiving accommodations struggle to find accessibility within theater program
July 12, 2021 | Source: Daily Northwestern
In the fall of 2019, then-senior Dana Pepowski (Communication ’20) sought help from AccessibleNU after symptoms of her chronic illnesses began to worsen. The accessibility counselor she worked with was the first person at Northwestern, and in her life, to ever validate her accessibility needs and illnesses, which are not obviously detectable. Pepowski said she had very little success in receiving accommodations from school leadership. She has numerous chronic illnesses — including gastroparesis, colonic dysmotility and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome — all of which can cause physical pain or fatigue, impacting her daily functions…
How to Find the Best Hotels for Wheelchair Users
July 12, 2021 | Source: AARP
Whenever we travel — even to visit family — we have to stay in a hotel. The typical home just doesn’t accommodate Barbara’s 350-pound power wheelchair. We need wider doorways, grab bars in the bathroom, ample turning space and a special shower. Fortunately, hotels in the U.S. have accessible guest rooms for wheelchair users. But how well a guest room works for us varies from hotel to hotel. At some, wheelchair users like Barbara face obstacles that can range from mild inconveniences to major safety concerns — when a shower’s bench is unstable or its grab bars are missing, for instance…
My daughter’s hidden disability
July 12, 2021 | Source: The Washington Post
With bright blue eyes and a head full of blond ringlets, 5-year-old Camille elicits the attention of strangers on a regular basis. The interactions often go one of two ways: A person compliments Camille, and she stares back at them deadpan. As the attempted conversation draws to an awkward halt, I jump in to explain that we are both hard of hearing. Because Camille chooses silence when she can’t comprehend spoken dialogue, people interpret her speechlessness as lack of intellect, but that is far from the truth…
Opinion: Where Austin sidewalks end, problems start
July 13, 2021 | Source: Austin American-Statesman
A few weeks ago, after months of virtual engagement, I was thrilled to teach my first in-person drawing class at an Austin art studio for people with disabilities. However, when one artist, Susan, arrived, she appeared more flustered than excited. Susan uses a wheelchair, and she explained that missing and broken sidewalks made her journey from the bus stop nearly impossible. For part of the route, Susan had no choice but to risk traveling on the main road during a lull in traffic…
5 People Share Their Accessible WFH Setups — And They Get the Job Done
July 13, 2021 | Source: Yahoo Finance
Millions of people who were used to going into offices to work have spent the past year trying to do the same job at home. It’s certainly been an ongoing task, especially when it comes to finding a professional background in a quiet corner, but what about people who have to accommodate their bodies’ needs alongside their jobs’ requirements? For many disabled people, a lot of thought has to go into a WFH setup, from figuring out how to sit for extended periods of time, to even determining whether sitting up is a possibility due to pain management…
How to make online information about the heat more accessible for the visually impaired
July 14, 2021 | Source: IdahoNews6
We get a lot of information online, including important things about the weather like how to tell the difference between heat stroke and heat exhaustion. But how accessible is that information for individuals who are visually impaired? “I don’t use my computer or the iPhone to get information on the weather, I feel like there’s enough information on TV,” Dana Ard, the president of the National Federation of the Blind of Idaho, said. A lot of information online is easily accessible for people who are blind through screen reader software…
‘Second-class citizens:’ Hard-of-hearing employees frustrated by lack of accessibility in remote and hybrid working
July 14, 2021 | Source: Digiday
If you think the enforced remote-working set-up of the last 16 months has been tough, multiply that by a thousand, and you’ll be somewhat closer to what a deaf or hard-of-hearing employee has experienced. The bulk of employers have failed to provide enough of the accessibility tools required for communication between its hard-of-hearing and hearing staff in remote-working setups, according to spokespeople for those communities. These tools, which include video captioning and digital interpreter services — so readily accessible in an in-office environment — have been missing in remote-working environments…
Nebraska election officials take steps to make voting accessible for disabled voters
July 14, 2021 | Source: Siouxland News
Free and fair elections are a fundamental American right and now Nebraska takes steps to ensure those with disabilities can vote barrier-free, in some cases literally opening doors. Many take advantage of automated doors and libraries, banks, and schools because of the convenience. “For people with disabilities or mobility issues to get through easily,” said Hall County Election Commissioner Tracy Overstreet. Overstreet has identified nine polling places that don’t have accessible doors. It reflects a shift in where voting takes place…
Remarks by Vice President Harris Before Meeting with Disabilities Advocates to Discuss Voting Rights
July 14, 2021 | Source: The White House
Well, I want to thank these incredible leaders for joining us today, this morning. The issue of voting rights in America is probably among the most serious and significant issues that we are facing at this moment. And voting rights for people with disabilities is one of our highest priorities. In that context, I have asked these leaders to join me to provide us with insight, with advice, and with perspective on not only how these emerging laws in various states will impact our friends and our neighbors and family members with disabilities, but also I am fully aware that even before these laws started to most recently emerge, we still weren’t doing a good job…
Device taps brain waves to help paralyzed man communicate
July 14, 2021 | Source: AP
In a medical first, researchers harnessed the brain waves of a paralyzed man unable to speak — and turned what he intended to say into sentences on a computer screen. It will take years of additional research but the study, reported Wednesday, marks an important step toward one day restoring more natural communication for people who can’t talk because of injury or illness. “Most of us take for granted how easily we communicate through speech,” said Dr. Edward Chang, a neurosurgeon at the University of California, San Francisco, who led the work…
Fewer than two dozen priests are deaf and one is helping deaf Catholics to first confession in 20 years
July 14, 2021 | Source: The Catholic Reader
Father Min Seo Park, one of fewer than two dozen deaf priests worldwide, thinks deafness is hardly a disability and is working to help others realize that as well. Deaf since an illness at age 2, the new chaplain of St. Francis of Assisi Deaf Catholic Church in Landover Hills, Maryland, is hoping to convey the idea that deafness be treated as a culture. Since returning to the United States from his native Seoul, South Korea, in late January, Father Park, 52, has taken up three ministries…
Marlee Matlin to Hollywood: Disability Is ‘Not a Box to Be Checked Off’
July 14, 2021 | Source: Backstage
“We need other Oscar winners who are deaf,” says Marlee Matlin, the only deaf actor to win the coveted award. “We need to see more deaf actors hired, more disabled actors hired—and not only actors. I’m talking about producers, directors, writers—giving the entire Hollywood workforce an opportunity for deaf people and disabled people to participate.” What about Matlin’s other Academy Award record: her status as the youngest best actress winner in the ceremony’s history? “That one I’d like to keep,” she says with a shameless grin. “Anyone over 21, fine! Go ahead—win the Oscar. I don’t care.”…

Justice Department Files Statement of Interest Regarding ADA Coverage of Blood Plasma Donation Centers
July 15, 2021 | Source: DOJ (PDF)
Yesterday, the Justice Department filed a Statement of Interest in a lawsuit in the Northern District of Illinois to clarify that blood plasma donation centers are “public accommodations” under Title III of the ADA. The lawsuit, Gomez v. CSL Plasma, Inc., alleges that Defendant violated Title III of the ADA by refusing to provide Plaintiff, who is deaf, with an American Sign Language interpreter, making it impossible for him to donate plasma at Defendant’s plasma donation center. Plaintiff has moved for partial summary judgment on the legal issue that Defendant is a “service establishment” and therefore a “public accommodation” under Title III…
Newton activist to put pedal to metal in first Pan-Mass Challenge
July 15, 2021 | Source: Wicked Local
If you see a three-wheeled trike zip by on Aug. 7, during the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), it’s probably longtime accessibility activist Robert Solomon. The Newton resident, who has been living with incurable, progressive nerve root disease since 2004, has been training for the event for years. Determined to raise funds for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute that helped him so much after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2003, he will be using a recumbent trike, called a Catrike Dumont, with full suspension that smooths out the street for his delicate spine, he said…

How Smart Mobility Will Impact Cities By 2025
July 15, 2021 | Source: Smart City Press
Local governments have been racing to become the next “smart city,” introducing new technology and digital services. Those advancements can be helpful for citizens and policymakers — especially during the pandemic when in-person services were suspended — but also carry risks if they’re not managed properly, said report author Jeff Merritt, WEF’s head of internet of things and urban transformation. “It’s a bit shocking when you see what some cities aren’t thinking about. They move so fast that they’re not thinking about clarity of accountability or responsibility,” said Merritt, who was previously the director of innovation for New York City…

Once matched up, the teams spend some time training together in preparation for their new lives ahead. “I call her my superdog,” Soto said of the 2-year-old yellow Lab. “She’s a great listener … she’s a partner in crime. I owe a lot to her because she’s given me new strength.”…
Study: New genetic test effective at spotting people at high risk for glaucoma
July 15, 2021 | Source: UPI
A new genetic test for glaucoma is 15 times more accurate at identifying people at high risk for the eye disease than existing diagnostics, a study published Thursday by JAMA Ophthalmology found. The test, performed on a blood or saliva sample, is designed to spot multiple genetic mutations known to cause the disease before irreversible vision loss occurs, the researchers said. “Genetic testing is not currently a routine part of glaucoma diagnosis and care, but this test has the potential to change that,” study co-author Dr. Jamie Craig said in a press release…

Sweeping Executive Order Puts Hearing Aids Over The Counter; Cracks Down On Internet Providers
July 9, 2021 | Source: Medtech Insight
Senate Democrats’ plan to expand Medicare coverage would help a growing senior population often struggling with hefty out-of-pocket medical expenses, potentially providing ballast for the economy in coming years. Democrats on the Senate Budget Committee agreed Tuesday on a $3.5 trillion spending level for a bill to carry most of President Joe Biden’s economic agenda into law without Republican support. The bill would include one key item that wasn’t in Biden’s plans: vision, dental and hearing benefits for Medicare recipients, who are disproportionately those over 65 years old…

High-rise housing will exclude disabled people unless rules improve – critics
July 10, 2021 | Source: Stuff- New Zealand
A focus on high-density housing in Auckland may result in homes that disabled people cannot access unless building regulations improve, critics say. Developers will be free to build up to six storeys around cities, major town centres and train stations if a government-led initiative is approved. But disability advocate Huhana Hickey says people with limited mobility could be “excluded from entire suburbs”, as current regulations do not require homes to be accessible…

Accessibility to Public Transport for the Urban Poor
July 10, 2021 | Source: Elets- India
An integral element in the evolution of cities has been the development of a robust and far-reaching public transportation system. Over the past 200 years or more, urban public transport systems have evolved and advanced tremendously. Irrespective of its form or size, a public transport system is meant to move people in masses and at speed. A public transport system acts as a basic mobility service that is meant to be affordable, accessible, and easily available for all…

These include people with disabilities, parents with small children, the elderly, pregnant persons, and those recovering from various injuries. However, Dostupno.UA finds that “only 4% of urban infrastructure in Ukraine is fully accessible” – something they are working to change…

Startups aren’t doing enough to support employees with disabilities

The shift to remote work over the last year has no doubt opened up career opportunities for people with disabilities, says Franziska Hauck, people lead and coach in engineering at Berlin-based software company Signavio and disability advocate.
