The New York State Comptroller’s Office thinks more needs to be done to improve the experience for people with disabilities who visit state parks. In an audit released Friday, state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli urged officials with the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to take the steps needed to ensure state parks and historic sites are accessible and accommodating to people with disabilities. The audit, which covered state parks operations from January 2018 to October 2022, determined that accessibility has not been actively incorporated into the process for maintaining and operating New York parks…

The deaf artists making sure hip-hop is for everybody
August 8, 2023 | Source: MSNBC
By now, you’ve likely seen a viral video of an American Sign Language interpreter borrowing the limelight from a musician during a concert. The performances go beyond what many hearing people may understand as signing, leaning into dance and exaggerated facial expressions to more fully capture a song’s essence. These animated, visual personifications of music lend themselves to virality. The overdue proliferation of ASL interpreters at concerts underscores the critical need for accessibility…
Do sensory hours make stores more accessible to neurodivergent people?
August 10, 2023 | Source: WBFO
Imagine this, upon entering a store, the rattling of shopping carts and the unexpected loudspeaker announcements stifle your ears. The fluorescent lights from above make you wince. To finish it off, every moment you try to flee the noise, it seems like the busy shopping crowds simply won’t disappear. Though these shopping encounters are common, they can be painful and make shopping difficult for people with sensory disabilities. This back-to-school season, Walmart announced sensory hours every Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. at some locations…

Parks across New York have inaccessible entrances and restrooms, obstacles on trails and paths and limited parking for people with disabilities, according to an audit by the state comptroller’s office. The audit examined 40 parks managed by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation from January 2018 through October, including amenities in more than 1,400 restrooms, campsites, swimming areas, playgrounds, pavilions, elevators, parking areas and boat launches. The audit determined 62 percent of those amenities need to be improved to enhance accessibility…
Work Is Improving For Disabled Workers In The U.S.
August 11, 2023 | Source: The Hill
Workers with disabilities have long seen their fortunes ebb and flow with the economy. Federal law (ADA) prohibits most employers from discriminating against people with disabilities, and it requires them to make reasonable accommodations. But research has found that discrimination remains common––one 2017 study found that job applications that disclosed a disability were 26 percent less likely to receive interest from prospective employers. And even when they can find jobs, workers with disabilities frequently encounter barriers to success, from bathroom doors they cannot open without assistance, to hostile co-workers…

Morgan’s Wonderland: All to know about the unique theme park

Price of elder care soars as demand increases, baby boomers age
August 13, 2023 | Source: The Hill
Many Americans who serve as caregivers are consumed by the immense cost of tending to ailing or aging family members. And as the baby boomer generation ages, more Americans are in for a rude awakening as to just how expensive caring for older adults has become. The price of nursing home care increased by an average of 2.4 percent each year between 2012 and 2019, for a cumulative increase of 20.7 percent, according to data from the health research group Altarum Institute…
‘I’m trying to inspire people’: Chelmsford disability advocate to pen autobiography
August 14, 2023 | Source: Lowell Sun
Before Frankie Radgowski could sit for Mass at St. Mary’s Church, he had to take his 200-pound wheelchair up a portable, metal ramp. To do so was “very dangerous,” he said. “I would not recommend it,” he said. “I’m not trying to go visit the hospital.” The 41-year-old Chelmsford resident, who was born with cerebral palsy, also watched as his friend, also a wheelchair user, had to be carried up the stairs. The issue posed a unique risk for disabled parishioners, so Radgowski decided to rise to the challenge…
Disabled people deserve concert venues that ensure full accessibility
August 14, 2023 | Source: Prism Reports
This has been the year of me attending concerts of artists that defined the soundtrack of my life: Janet Jackson and Beyoncé. Both of these women are icons in my book, and based on the number of fans in attendance yelling their names and singing their hearts out to each song performed at their respective tour stops, I am not alone in making that assertion. As a wheelchair user, concert-going is a fairly new experience for me. I attended my first major concert in 2019, and after having such a great time I had hoped to do more…

PSA: Don’t Use The ADA Bathroom Stall If You Don’t Need To
August 16, 2023 | Source: HuffPost
When you use a public restroom with multiple stalls in the United States, there will often be at least one accessible stall option wider than the rest. The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 was created to ban discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of American public life. And as part of the latest 2010 ADA design guidelines, public and commercial restrooms are required to have at least 5% clustered stalls accommodating people with disabilities…
How Big Brother made the game accessible for deaf contestant Matt Klotz
August 16, 2023 | Source: Entertainment Weekly
Big Brother season 25 has already been filled with big twists and turns. A “Time Laser” was set off. Survivor legend Cirie Fields entered the game. And just the other night, contestants were attacked by something called a “Nether Gorgan.” (I promise, all of that actually happened.) But the biggest change to both the house and to the game this season has revolved around the addition of Big Brother’s first ever deaf houseguest, Matt Klotz. Klotz had already proven himself to be a fierce competitor, representing the United States as a world record holding swimmer at the Deaflympics…

The mandate — which must be approved by the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission — is part of an effort to reduce emissions and fine particulate matter in the air. Taxis and for-hire vehicles account for 4% of carbon emissions from vehicles in the city.

Today’s popular films are more inclusive in their casting than they were 16 years ago, according to a USC Annenberg study released Thursday. But who’s in leading roles in front of and behind the camera has hardly changed. Since 2007, the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative (AII), led by USC Communication Professor Stacy L. Smith, has tracked the gender and race/ethnicity of characters in each year’s top 100 domestic films. In 2014, the study added LGBTQ+ status to its data, and in 2015, disability status…
