How Accessible Is The Housing Market?
February 19, 2020 | Source: Apartment List
For renters living with a physical disability, accessibility is of utmost importance when searching for a new home. No matter how appealing the price or location, a home is not suitable unless it accommodates the physical needs of its tenants. A number of laws exist to protect renters with a disability from housing discrimination and to bolster the availability of accessible dwellings. Nevertheless, many renters searching for housing that is both affordable and accessible encounter unique challenges…
New DC interim trip explores accessibility in the arts
February 20, 2020 | Source: Manitou Messenger
Over interim, I participated in “Democracy and the Arts in D.C.,” a course dedicated to learning and discussing all the complex ways that policy from the federal level to local nonprofits shapes the arts and the way the public interacts with them. Over the course of a month, we saw more performances and went to more museums than I had previously thought was humanly possible. We also talked to curators, lobbyists, members of Congress, directors and artists, among many others. And we somehow found time to get an average of 6.98 hours of sleep a night (not that anyone’s counting)…
Disability rights groups say focus on election security hurting voter accessibility
February 20, 2020 | Source: The Hill
Disability rights advocates on Thursday urged election officials to focus on accessibility alongside security for U.S. elections and pushed for more technological solutions that would allow all Americans to cast secure votes. “For people with disabilities, our votes aren’t secure now,” Kelly Buckland, the executive director of the National Council for Independent Living, said at an election accessibility summit hosted by the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) on Thursday. “I believe we could make them more secure through technology that is available today.”…

A warning for any retailer that sells a gift card: The lawsuits are coming. For more than a year News10NBC tracked the trend of a handful of lawyers suing property owners, businesses and schools for violating the terms of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a federal law that has existed since the early 1990s. And now, News10NBC found out retailers and their gift cards are at the core of hundreds of new lawsuits. And they are the first in this country…
Housing supply lacking for people with disabilities in Charlotte, report says
February 21, 2020 | Source: Charlotte Observer
Only a sliver of Charlotte’s housing stock is accessible to people with disabilities, with far fewer units than the number of households who need them, according to a new report. Just 5.5% of the Charlotte metro’s housing stock meets a federal accessibility standard for residents with mobility disabilities, according to real estate listing site Apartment List, which used Census data to compare supply and demand of accessible units. However, 11.6% of Charlotte metro households contains someone with a disability…
Stalked by The Fear That Dementia Is Stalking You
February 21, 2020 | Source: Kaiser Health News
Do I know I’m at risk for developing dementia? You bet. My father died of Alzheimer’s disease at age 72; my sister was felled by frontotemporal dementia at 58. And that’s not all: Two maternal uncles had Alzheimer’s, and my maternal grandfather may have had vascular dementia. (In his generation, it was called senility.) So what happens when I misplace a pair of eyeglasses or can’t remember the name of a movie I saw a week ago? “Now comes my turn with dementia,” I think…

February 21, 2020 | Source: KUNR Public Radio
Scott Youngs is the project director for ADA Nevada, which provides training for people with disabilities and helps organizations understand their responsibilities in regards to being compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. KUNR’s Lucia Starbuck spoke with Youngs about what Nevada’s caucus can do to be more accessible for voters with disabilities, and about his own experience caucusing. Youngs: I think one of the biggest barriers that I hear most of the time are general types of things with parking, accessible routes, getting to the site where the activity is going on [and] having to wait in long lines…

Kara Gaulrapp, friendly and personable, sits down in a conference room to chat. Taking a sip of her Sprite, she finds it exceptionally enjoyable to talk about her work—and why it’s so important. “I have been on the internet since I was 5 years old, so I can navigate my way through some atrocious user experience scenarios, but for those without that background, those scenarios can be huge barriers for people,” she says. “I am passionate about the underdog and about communities that are consistently ignored or left behind.”…
Trump has flipped the 9th Circuit — and some new judges are causing a ‘shock wave’
February 22, 2020 | Source: Los Angeles Times
When President Trump ticks off his accomplishments since taking office, he frequently mentions his aggressive makeover of a key sector of the federal judiciary — the circuit courts of appeal, where he has appointed 51 judges to lifetime jobs in three years. In few places has the effect been felt more powerfully than in the sprawling 9th Circuit, which covers California and eight other states. Because of Trump’s success in filling vacancies, the San Francisco-based circuit, long dominated by Democratic appointees, has suddenly shifted to the right, with an even more pronounced tilt expected in the years ahead…
Triumph kid for all: meme accessibility for the blind
February 22, 2020 | Source: Boston University News Service & The Tartan & PGH City Paper
Social media has revolutionized the way humanity connects on a global scale, but in the blind and visually impaired community, barriers to social media inclusion persist. “Social media accessibility has gotten better but continues to be a huge issue,” said Sassy Outwater-Wright, director for the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. “A huge amount of information is communication through infographics, movies, GIFs and they’re all image-based,” she said…

Self-Help Or Activism: A Fundamental Divide In The Disability Community
February 23, 2020 | Source: Forbes
It shouldn’t be a surprise, but it’s helpful to remember that disabled people don’t always agree or get along with each other, even about disability itself and how to deal with its problems. Here is a fairly typical exchange between two disabled people…A: “Last night I went to that restaurant everyone’s talking about, and when I got there I couldn’t get in because there are two steps at the entrance and no ramp! We should do a campaign or protest to get them to comply with accessibility standards.”…

Casey Proposes Legislation To Address Accessibility Problems At Polling Places
February 24, 2020 | Source: WESA
As 2020 presidential candidates court voters in early states, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey has introduced legislation to make polling places more accessible to voters across the country, addressing a concern among many voters with disabilities. “The right to vote is only as good as the right to have access to voting,” the Pennsylvania Democrat said. “We’ve got to make sure that every single American, when they go to vote, actually can vote without impediment.” Only 17 percent of polling places assessed in a 2017 study from the Government and Account Office were found to be free of any impediments…

Deadline Approaching for Agencies to Post Regulatory Guidance
February 24, 2020 | Source: Bloomberg Law
Anyone looking for all of the guidance, notices, and letters that federal agencies use to explain regulations should be able to find it on searchable websites by the end of this week, if agencies meet their deadline. President Donald Trump last October signed a pair of executive orders intended to rein in agency guidance documents, defined broadly as all the ways agency officials explain regulations under their jurisdiction. One order required agencies to post all their guidance—including letters, adjudication decisions, or even press releases—on one easily accessible website…
How I disclose my disability during a job search
February 24, 2020 | Source: Fast Company
When I was searching for a job before graduating law school, one question on every application made me feel especially anxious: “Are you a person with a disability?” I’m autistic, so the answer is fairly obvious. Despite this, I’d find myself pausing when I came to this part on a job application, lightly hovering my mouse over the options. Selecting “yes” would mean complete honesty. I’m not ashamed of my autism whatsoever. Autism is just as much part of who I am as the fact I am female or have red hair…
Popstar To Pizza To Adult Websites: Complying With The ADA In The Digital Age
February 25, 2020 | Source: Forbes
In January 2019, a blind woman from New York sued Beyoncé Knowles’ company, Parkwood Entertainment. The plaintiff claimed Beyonce.com did not provide required accommodations for those with visual impairments. She said that Beyonce’s website presented barriers to blind people who used screen readers. The claimed barriers also included the absence of “alt text” (text describing an image read aloud to blind users by screen-reader software), accessible drop-down menus that allow those with visual impairments to click through the website, and keyboard access…
How accessibility consultants are building a more inclusive video game industry behind the scenes
February 25, 2020 | Source: Washington Post
Last year, Forbes published an article titled “’Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’ Needs to Respect Its Players and Add an Easy Mode.” In the piece, Dave Thier, the author, argues that the title’s egregiously high difficulty settings detract from the superb world and character design. “The difficulty is only one part of what defines these games for me, and honestly, it’s not the most important part,” wrote Thier. Easier difficulty settings would allow those with physical or cognitive limitations — or just limited time to play games — the opportunity to experience the studio’s artistic vision…
Lawsuits target local businesses with websites deemed inaccessible to the visually impaired
February 25, 2020 | Source: Suffolk Times
A series of “cut and paste” lawsuits has reached the North Fork, affecting dozens of local businesses and prompting the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce to issue an “urgent alert” last week. The lawsuits are aimed at businesses with websites that are considered inaccessible to the visually impaired, a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Local business owners were stunned to learn that their websites are subject to the same ADA regulations as their brick-and-mortar shops…
Where the sidewalk ends: A stroll down Main Street with an accessibility activist
February 26, 2020 | Source: Worcester Mag
On a recent chilly afternoon, I met disability activist Deb Ellstrom by the Federal Courthouse for a stroll down the recently redesigned and partially completed Main Street. We started our jaunt down the newly paved sidewalks at the corner of Main Street and Myrtle Street, and we were quickly confronted with what would be a daring obstacle for someone who uses a wheelchair. Behind the courthouse, one panel of sidewalk — a roughly four-foot length — remained unpaved. Two flimsy plywood served as ad-hoc ramps into the gravel pit, about a four- to six-inch drop from the pavement around it…
Los Angeles Has an Accessible Housing Shortage, Too
February 26, 2020 | Source: GlobeSt.com
Physically disabled renters have a major challenge finding accessible housing that fits their budget. According to a recent report from Apartment List, only 6% of homes in the US are accessible, and it is presenting a big challenge for physically disabled renters. In Los Angeles, the cost-burden rate is 10% higher for renters with a disability, as a result. “This analysis was spurred by the fact that the cost burden rate—the percentage of households spending more than 30% of income on housing—is notably higher for those with a disability than those without,” Rob Warnock of Apartment List, tells GlobeSt.com…
Study data guides key transportation and land-use policy decisions
February 26, 2020 | Source: UMN News
Annual nationwide data from the Accessibility Observatory at the University of Minnesota, that measures access to jobs by transit, is guiding key transportation and land-use policy decisions. “We analyzed the accessibility performance of largest U.S. metropolitan areas,” said Andrew Owen, director of the Observatory. “This new data has a range of uses and implications, especially when applied on a state and local level.” State departments of transportation, metropolitan planning organizations and transit agencies can apply the data to performance goals related to congestion, reliability and sustainability…
Music is for every body
February 26, 2020 | Source: Chicago Reader
Almost ten years ago, I was offered a free ticket to see New Orleans rapper Curren$y and Chicago duo the Cool Kids at Metro. I remember two details from the show: the harrowing experience of having my wheelchair pushed up two flights of stairs to the theater, then lowered back down in a process that was somehow even more grueling and scary, and the fact that Curren$y gave me a T-shirt. I go to lots of concerts, but this one stands out—and not for good reasons. First was the venue, which I’d been assured would be fully equipped to handle a person in a wheelchair, and second was that free shirt, which I promptly lost…
State websites show dozens of accessibility errors, may violate Americans with Disabilities Act
February 26, 2020 | Source: Channel 3000
Many Wisconsin state agency websites may be out of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. A News 3 Now investigation found nearly all state agency websites had violations that made them inaccessible to certain people with disabilities. Wendi Dwyer first spotted these issues on wisc.jobs in January 2019 when she tried to apply for a job. She brought them to the attention of the state Department of Administration, but more than a year later, nothing had been done…
Disney makes disabled guests wait too long for rides, lawsuits allege
February 27, 2020 | Source: Los Angeles Times
Lawsuits against Walt Disney Co. are moving ahead in California and Florida, challenging how the company allows disabled people to access theme park attractions. Both lawsuits, filed by the same lead attorney, Tampa-based Andy Dogali, accuse the world’s most popular theme park operator of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act by making park-goers with autism and other disabilities wait too long to get on a ride. In court records, Dogali says he has nearly 100 plaintiffs wanting to challenge Disney’s policy…
Jack Fact — According to the National Center for Health Statistics, by 2025, there could be 65.2 million people in the U.S. aged 65 years old and up, compared to 47.7 million in 2015. That increase would be exponentially higher by percentage than the growth for Americans under 64, and would put seniors ever closer to 20% of the country’s total population.

After years of waiting, ride-hailing finally launched in Vancouver last month, a move that was applauded by much of the local community. It’s not hard to see why people are excited about ride-hailing. A quick glance at some of the Google reviews for several Vancouver taxi companies reveal scores of two stars or less. The reviews cite high prices, long pickup times, and rude drivers. The thought of being able to take a ride that’s cheaper, convenient, modern, and friendlier would excite anyone…

DSN, a Cheshire-base sensory loss charity, said the additional expense for those arranging funerals if they have a member of the congregation who has a hearing loss and needs a loop system or a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter is “unacceptable”. As a result a crowdfunding pot has been launched by DSN this week with the help of Dignity Funerals, W. Styling yourself when you are blind

When I was designing my wedding dress two years ago, I really only knew one thing. It didn’t just have to look good. It had to feel good as well. I wanted to be able to experience the dress with my other senses because I’m blind and I wouldn’t be able to see it. I met with a couple of designers. Only one took the time to make sure she understood how to work with someone with a vision impairment. She let me feel dozens of fabrics, try on other dresses she’d made and thought deeply about how to explain colour…

The ‘it’s everyone’s journey’ campaign will work to raise awareness for passengers with disabilities and encourage better accessibility on public transport. Grant Shapps, the UK’s Transport Secretary, has begun his accessibility efforts by accelerating the progress of public transport across the country becoming more accessible and, subsequently, making the UK a world leader for accessible travel. The 1964 Tokyo Paralympics: The Origin of Disabled Sport in Japan
February 25, 2020 | Source: Nippon- Japan
With the 2020 Paralympic Games, Tokyo will become the first city in the world to have hosted the Paralympics twice. Tokyo’s inaugural Paralympic Games were held after the 1964 Summer Olympics, from November 8 to 12, 1964. At the time the Tokyo events were formally considered a continuation of the Stoke Mandeville Games, first held as a domestic competition in London in 1948 and an international gathering in 1952. But after the International Paralympic Committee was established in 1989, these games were retroactively regarded as the second Paralympic Games, following the first gathering in Rome in 1960…
Oliver Twist for all the senses: Leeds makes Dickens fully accessible
February 26, 2020 | Source: The Guardian- England
Entering director Amy Leach’s rehearsal room at Leeds Playhouse, one of the first things you notice is the big screen at one end. As Leach explains, it’s there to display the script, freeing the performers’ hands to sign. It’s a reminder that integrating access into the theatre-making process involves rethinking habits and assumptions at every level. “It can be small; it can be massive,” says Leach. Leach is currently rehearsing a new, fully accessible production of Oliver Twist. It’s the latest show staged as part of Ramps on the Moon, a programme that aims to put accessibility at the heart of theatre institutions…
Disabled gig-goer slams Bristol venue SWX for ‘poor accessibility’
February 26, 2020 | Source: Bristol Live- UK
A disabled gig-goer in Bristol has criticised the accessibility of one of the city’s biggest venues. Keen live music fan AJ Le Brun was diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) in 2018 and functional neurological disorder last year, leaving her largely wheelchair-bound. In May 2019 the 33-year-old went to see rock band The Pineapple Thief at SWX on Nelson Street, where the main room is located at the top of a twisting staircase. AJ was aware of this, and that there is no lift at the venue, but had purchased a ticket for the gig when it was scheduled to take place at The Fleece before being moved due to high demand…
