MTA’s Struggling Access-A-Ride Service Eyes Cash Fix for Drivers
December 12, 2021 Source: The City
With Access-A-Ride service quality in a monthslong slump, the MTA is considering putting more money in drivers’ pockets to boost the paratransit system’s reliability, THE CITY has learned. Among the ideas being mulled, advocates said, are proposals to pay for drivers’ bridge and tunnel tolls to help them avoid traffic on local roads — and dole out per-trip bonuses to improve performance that, in recent months, has been at its lowest level in years. “I just want Access-A-Ride to do one thing right,” said Krista Simeone, 32, who takes paratransit to travel between her home in Flushing and job in Kew Gardens…

December 10, 2021 Source: Iowa Public Radio
Sioux City residents got the opportunity to share their concerns surrounding accessibility at a town hall hosted by Disability Rights Iowa on Wednesday. The Des-Moines based organization advocates for the legal rights of Iowans with disabilities throughout the state. Through town halls, Disability Rights Iowa aims to understand accessibility needs in regions like northwest Iowa, where their services are less frequently used. “We can’t do every possible legal issue that comes up, so we really want our work to be focused on what people are currently experiencing as barriers so we can remove those,” said Catherine Johnson, the organization’s new executive director…
Volunteers work to improve disabled access to businesses
December 11, 2021 Source: CT Insider
The Americans with Disabilities Act is more than 30 years old but many businesses and tourist attractions remain inaccessible. That can make it tough for disabled people to know where they can easily visit. Accessible Black Hills is a new volunteer organization that’s trying to tackle these issues, South Dakota Public Broadcasting reported. Kelsey Stine, who founded the group, used her power wheelchair to visit the Dahl Art Center in Rapid City last month…

Embrace accessibility of telehealth for autism services
December 11, 2021 Source: The Daily Gazette
Approximately one out of 54 children in the United States live with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). My son is one of those individuals, so I know firsthand some of the many struggles that can come with safely accessing health care. Diagnosing ASD early in a child’s development can have a significant effect on a child’s health care and treatment plan. However, due to an overburdened system and a lack of qualified professionals in this field, many families are forced to wait up to 12 months for an initial diagnostic appointment…
Hours after a massage, a professor was wildly dizzy and deaf in one ear
December 11, 2021 Source: The Washington Post
Stretched out on her back at a Pennsylvania spa enjoying a Fourth of July massage with a friend, Catherine Nettles Cutter felt a sudden jolt of pain shoot down the side of her neck into her collarbone and heard the loud crack that changed her life. “Whoa,” said the masseuse, who had been turning Cutter’s head from side to side. She suggested that the food microbiologist might want to try physical therapy to improve her flexibility. As she climbed off the massage table Cutter, then 56, felt nothing out of the ordinary. But when she awoke at 7 the next morning, she was violently dizzy and nearly deaf in her right ear; the left was unaffected…

Many bank websites fall short of ADA requirements. U.S. Bank is an exception
December 13, 2021 Source: American Banker
A recent audit of U.S. banks’ websites found that many fail to meet basic standards of accessibility by people with disabilities. U.S. Bancorp in Minneapolis is an exception. The $550 billion-asset bank goes to great lengths to make its website and mobile banking app usable to people with disabilities — such as by having employees with disabilities co-design products — and conducts frequent tests of these efforts. The bank’s approach elicits praise from accessibility experts. “People who are actually disabled can tell you about the user experience,” said Martin McKay, CEO of Texthelp…

December 13, 2021 Source: The Hill
President Biden’s Build Back Better bill has been lauded for including historic climate change provisions, health care and infrastructure initiatives, but it also carries the opportunity for people with disabilities to finally make at least minimum wage. People with disabilities are legally allowed to be paid below the federal minimum wage, as part of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (FSLA). It’s called subminimum wage and it’s allowed under Section 14(c), meant to encourage employers to hire certain individuals that are impaired by physical or mental disabilities so they don’t lose out on employment opportunities…

5 Signs Toddler May Be Color Blind
December 13, 2021 Source: Babygaga
Trying to accurately diagnose toddlers with color blindness can be tricky. This is because many children may not proficiently learn their colors until they are three to four years of age. As such, when quizzing on colors during a walk or while coloring in coloring books, parents may get the wrong answers just because toddlers simply have not learned to memory which name is assigned to which color. But, if parents are worried that there may be some problems with their little ones’ vision, there are some signs to watch for that would indicate a toddler may be color blind…

At the Solon Board of Education meeting Monday (Dec. 13), Nick Szucs claimed that district administrators failed to provide language access to his deaf daughter, Ivy, despite repeated requests on his part for them to do so. The school board did not respond to Szucs’ comments, as its policy is that it does not directly address public comment during board meetings…

In the 21st century, Hoy received consideration by the Veterans Committee for induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. “He faced prejudice, especially in the beginning of his career,” says Nancy Churnin, who wrote The William Hoy Story, a children’s book meant to inform and inspire. “But he also made great friends. He taught his teammates sign language, and they loved it.”…
Two Americas: Accessibility in Billings through the eyes of the disabled
December 16, 2021 Source: KTVQ
Under Skypoint in downtown Billings, Katelyn Baker uses her motorized wheelchair to maneuver the sidewalks. But the truth is, it’s not always easy. “People don’t realize I have the same rights as a pedestrian,” she said. And she’s right. People don’t realize that. Often, she sees it with an obstruction on a sidewalk, a door that doesn’t have a button to open automatically, and when she’s trying to get across an intersection in Billings Heights, where she lives. Baker lives with mild cerebral palsy…

Accessibility improvement plans at Insch railway station could soon be on right track
December 11, 2021 Source: Press and Journal- Scotland
Plans for £2.2 million of improvements at one of the least-accessible train stations in Scotland may soon be on the right track. In 2007, Insch residents were told they would have to wait more than six years for improvements. But 14 years later, the situation remains the same. It is currently the only station in the north-east where neither platform is accessible to all users, meaning some travellers have to transfer to other, accessible stations. The nearest accessible station is around 15 miles away in Kintore. And it’s not just those with mobility issues, such as wheelchair users, who face difficulties at the station…
Bringing accessible tourism to the world
December 11, 2021 Source: The Jerusalem Post- Israel
At first glance, Professor Yaniv Poria doesn’t appear to be the most traditional Jew on the planet. He regularly wears a hat, but it is more Leonard Cohen than traditional Jewish; he sports a goatee beard and he wears earrings. Yet, the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev professor at the Department of Hotel and Tourism Management, Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management would proudly argue that his entire career is informed by Jewish values and outlook…
Deaf Visibility In Television
December 11, 2021 Source: Redbrick- UK
Deaf visibility on television is something that has been an issue for a while; representation of deaf people on television programmes is so important for those in the deaf community as it helps them feel recognised in society whilst also helping others build an awareness of what life is like for those with hearing impairments. However, most shows demonstrate few attempts of trying to incorporate deaf actors even though they are such a large part of society. We can only hope that the shows that are moving in a more inclusive direction encourage others to do the same…

December 12, 2021 Source: Lovin Malta
Nationalist MP Kevin Cutajar and Labour MP Oliver Scicluna have said that while there have been many improvements, there is “still a long way to go” when it comes to tackling accessibility issues in Malta. This comes after Lovin Malta wrote an article about one man’s recollection of his mother’s struggles with accessibility, and we reached out to MPs to hear about their thoughts on physical accessibility in Malta. “As to physical accessibility, although there has been a lot of improvement over the past few decades, I feel that we still have a long way to go,” Cutajar said…

December 13, 2021 Source: The Star- Canada
Brad Bartko says he looks up about 30 bars on the internet before he finds one that just might work for date night with his wife. “I’m not even exaggerating,” says the 28-year-old Edmontonian who has cerebral palsy and has been using a wheelchair his whole life. “You have to make sure someone in a wheelchair can get up to the establishment.” Bartko says he can’t even get through the doorway at some bars and restaurants. “Some places I can’t go to the bathroom. I can’t sit at a table with my friends. The (bar) has to (create a) makeshift table for me from the storage closet, but I’m separated from my group.”…

December 13, 2021 Source: Nature- UK & PDF
Designing environmental policy to take account of social difference is increasingly recognized as essential to address both effectiveness and justice concerns. So far there is limited research on the experiences of disabled people in the environmental literature, amounting to a failure to recognize this substantial constituency. Here we compare disabled households’ embodied energy use, income, risk of poverty and energy poverty, and other socio-demographics with other households in the European Union…

Restoring lost hearing
December 14, 2021 Source: The New Indian Express- India
Helen Keller — an American author, disability rights advocate and political activist — lost her sight and hearing while she was a toddler. She wrote in her memoirs, “If I were to be born again and had to choose between blindness and deafness, I would choose to be blind. Deafness is worse than blindness. It is the loneliness, the sense of isolation and the lack of understanding among hearing people that makes it so”. In society, generally, people with blindness might receive sympathy but many times the deaf is looked down on with contempt and ridicule…
How to ensure equal opportunities for disabled employees

Non-visible disabilities are one of the themes of the UK’s Disability History Month (UKDHM)—18 November-18 December in 2021. Non-visible disabilities or health conditions are not immediately recognisable, nor can they be seen “from the outside.” The Equalities Act 2010 defines disability as “a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities”. In the UK, 14.1 million people (1 in 5) are disabled. Of those, over 70% are thought to have non-visible disabilities…

- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
