2020 marks the 30th anniversary of President George H.W. Bush signing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. Throughout this 30th anniversary year, the Division is publishing blog posts highlighting the impact that our recent ADA enforcement efforts have made in people’s everyday lives. We celebrate the many ways in which the ADA has transformed American society and enabled a generation of Americans with disabilities to thrive. At the same time, we recognize that many barriers to equal opportunity still exist…

December 11, 2020 | Source: Danbury News Times & Daily Voice & McKnight’s Senior Living
A local retirement community is among the targets of a lawsuit filed by the federal Justice Department Friday, alleging it failed to meet federal accessibility laws. Church Hill Village, on The Boulevard in Newtown, is one of 15 properties named in the suit. The complaint, filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, names J. Randolph Parry Architects, P.C. and eight owners of the properties as defendants. The lawsuit alleges the firm and owners violated the Fair Housing and Americans with Disabilities acts through the design of the properties…

December 14, 2020 | Source: U.S. Department of Justice
The Justice Department today announced a settlement agreement with the State of North Dakota under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The agreement resolves complaints alleging that North Dakota unnecessarily institutionalizes individuals with disabilities in nursing facilities, instead of providing them the services they need to live in the community. “Today’s settlement is a great victory for the people of North Dakota and its government. The settlement agreement will ensure that individuals with disabilities are no longer unnecessarily institutionalized in nursing facilities…

Beach Accessibility Bill Advances, Brings Beaches Closer to ADA Compliance
December 10, 2020 | Source: St. John Source
The Senate Committee on Rules and Judiciary advanced legislation at its Thursday hearing that, if signed into law, would bring the territory’s beaches closer to compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. The legislation would require at least two beaches in each USVI district to have reasonable access to the water and through the sand for those with mobility challenges. At a prior committee hearing, it was said AccessMats were likely to be used and had already been procured…
Reopen New York’s adult day health care programs
December 10, 2020 | Source: City & State NY- Peter Slatin
As Gov. Andrew Cuomo weighs new business closures in order to curb a resurgent pandemic, the venues of one vital health care service were never given a chance to reopen in New York: nurse-staffed adult day health care programs. These programs, known in the industry as “medical model ADHCs,” served roughly 8,000 chronically ill patients across New York, the vast majority of whom are elders and receive Medicaid, according to Anne Hill, executive director of the Adult Daycare Health Care Council…
Peloton Sued Over App’s Lack of Closed Captioning for Deaf People
December 10, 2020 | Source: TMZ
Listen up, Peloton — you’re excluding deaf people from being able to enjoy your app … at least that’s what’s alleged in a new class-action lawsuit. A man in New York is suing the stationary exercise bike company on behalf of his fellow deaf and hearing-impaired people … claiming the app is violating their civil rights. That’s because, according to legal docs obtained by TMZ, the Peloton app does not include closed captioning for its workout videos. The plaintiff claims this makes it “impossible” to comprehend the audio portions of the workout tutorials for deaf Peloton members…
Americans with Disabilities Act turns 30
December 11, 2020 | Source: Fulton Sun
On the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act’s passage, there’s still plenty of work to do to make the world equally accessible to all, disability advocates said. On Tuesday, the Daniel Boone Regional Library, the League of Women Voters of Columbia-Boone County and the Columbia Disabilities Commission teamed up to host a forum about the ADA. First passed in 1990 following decades of work by disability advocates and activists, the ADA is a civil rights law prohibiting discrimination based on disability…
Texas School for the Deaf claims 6-man state title with win over Veritas
December 11, 2020 | Source: Austin American Statesman
Texas School for the Deaf players Russell Rohde and Jordan Leeper sprinted toward the sideline and jumped on Rangers coach John Moore Jr. as the game-ending horn sounded Friday, causing him to fall to his knees. Not even the TSD coach could slow down Rohde and Leeper. The Rangers senior running back duo combined for 311 yards rushing and seven touchdowns to lead TSD to a 63-32 win over Veritas Academy in the TAPPS Division I Six-Man state championship game at Midway High’s Panther Stadium, bringing TSD a football state title for the first time in its 164-year history…
Vancouver man, others mark 30th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act
December 13, 2020 | Source: The Columbian
In the windup to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Chuck Frayer wrote more than a dozen pages about wilderness access that was whittled down to about two sentences in the final version of the law. Still, he thinks back fondly on his time in Washington, D.C., and went on to write design guidebooks about how to make recreation areas more accessible for people with disabilities like himself. The Vancouver resident has used a wheelchair since he was injured in a car crash at age 19. Going out and doing things was just part of his personality, he said…
Local church using sign language so deaf members can partake during pandemic
December 13, 2020 | Source: WABI
Many services have become more prevalent as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. The use of American Sign Language is one of them. Facial coverings have made it hard on people who are deaf or hard of hearing to communicate through the pandemic. “Prior to the pandemic, we did not have the interpreters for the people, I think the pandemic has helped us to plan To have a interpreter so that those people who wanted to have the signs, these interpretations will have the facility, and comfortability to understand what is being preached and what is being read in the church,” said Anthony Chinnaiyan, a Parochial Vicar with the church…
As Hollywood and tech look to boost diversity, accessibility is finally having its moment
December 14, 2020 | Source: CNET
When Tatiana Lee was a kid, she didn’t think of herself as “different.” Lee — an actress, model and activist — has spina bifida, meaning her spine and spinal cord didn’t form properly at birth. But as someone who uses a wheelchair, she also didn’t see many people like her on TV or in movies. “You’ve grown up with this society where this entire demographic is completely invisible,” she reflected. “Out of sight, out of mind.” That didn’t stop Lee from chasing her dream of becoming the person she never saw onscreen…
Accessible And Representative Toys Key For Development Of Kids With Disabilities
December 15, 2020 | Source: Forbes
Parents buying toys for children with disabilities this Christmas are likely to have to think twice before completing their purchase. The toy market for children with special needs is fraught on two levels. Firstly, in relation to imagination-sparking and role-playing toys like dolls and action figures, disability depictions have historically not been easy to come by. Kids with disabilities rarely get an opportunity to see themselves reflected in their toy box heroes and this lack of representative toys also has a knock-on effect on able-bodied children, who are deprived of valuable lessons in normalizing disability through pretend play from a young age…
Deaf Rescue Dog Adopted by Speech Pathologist Is Learning Commands in Sign Language
December 15, 2020 | Source: People
Sailor has found a family that speaks his language. The deaf, blue-eyed dog caught the attention of speech pathologist Allison Arnold and her partner when the couple was scrolling through Best Friends Animal Society’s pet adoption page. “We’ve always had a soft spot for animals, especially those that have been abandoned, have difficult circumstances, or have special needs that require more care,” Arnold told Best Friend Animal Society about why she adopted Sailor. “When we saw Sailor and learned he was deaf, we knew he was the one.”…
Computers for the Blind: The North Texas Nonprofit Making Technology More Accessible
December 16, 2020 | Source: Spectrum News
A nonprofit in Richardson, Computers for the Blind, is equipping blind or visually impaired individuals nationwide with the tools they need to be successful in today’s competitive work environment. According to a Cornell University Disability Status Report for 2018, the employment rate for people with visual impairments was 45.4%. That’s up from the estimate in 2011, which was at 37.2%, but still a stark difference from the 80% of working-age people without disabilities who are employed. The study also indicates about 8% of people in the labor force with a visual impairment are actively looking for work…
Betsy DeVos pleads with Education Department employees to ‘resist’ the Biden administration

So much for a peaceful transition …During a virtual Education Department meeting on Tuesday, President Trump’s education secretary, Betsy DeVos, told career employees to “be the resistance” when the Biden administration takes over next month. Politico got hold of a recording of her remarks. Acknowledging that many Education Department employees will remain through the transition, DeVos said: ‘Let me leave you with this plea: Resist. Be the resistance against forces that will derail you from doing what’s right for students. In everything you do, please put students first — always.’…
Maryland to pay $360,000 to inmates with disabilities who sued over inaccessibility at state prisons
December 16, 2020 | Source: Baltimore Sun
The Maryland Board of Public Works approved Wednesday a $360,000 settlement to a group of six inmates who alleged in a lawsuit that the state prison system failed to provide necessary accommodations to prisoners with disabilities. The suit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Baltimore last year, alleged a culture of noncompliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and a pattern of discrimination impacting inmates with disabilities. One plaintiff, a single-leg amputee named Karl Rogers, said he was forced to shower without any assistive devices, such as crutches or a handicap bench…

The road to inclusion: Empowering employees with disabilities
December 16, 2020 | Source: Benefits Pro
As we head into 2021, one topic on every employers’ agenda is the need to develop an actionable plan to address diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). While the word “diversity” is often associated with racial diversity, especially following this summer’s social movements in response to the death of George Floyd and others, “diversity” has much broader implications. Gender diversity is probably the next that comes to mind, but what about physical diversity?…
People with hearing loss shouldn’t have to pay Zoom for captions
December 17, 2020 | Source: Washington Post
Should wheelchair users pay to use ramps? Of course not, because ramps provide them equal access to buildings and public spaces. They allow wheelchair users to navigate the world successfully and independently. Ramps also create easier access for parents pushing strollers and travelers rolling heavy luggage. Universal design benefits everyone. So why is Zoom, the most popular video-conferencing company, asking people with hearing loss to pay for the equal access that they need? For those of us with hearing loss, captions are our ramps. But Zoom keeps them out of reach, hidden behind a paywall…
When Should I Worry About Eye Floaters?
December 17, 2020 | Source: Very Well Health
Eye floaters are small shapes that appear in your field of vision. They can look like cobwebs, spots, dots, squiggly lines, or threads. Floaters are usually harmless, but if you experience floaters that don’t go away and you are losing vision, you should contact an ophthalmologist or go to the emergency room. Eye floaters are a normal part of aging in the eyes.1 There’s a jelly-like fluid in your eye called the vitreous. As you reach your 50s and beyond, small fibers from the vitreous stick together and cast shadows on the retina, which is in the back of the eye. The shadows that you see are floaters…
How A Blind Kansas City Chess Champion Outmaneuvers Obstacles Like Poverty
December 17, 2020 | Source: WCUR
Chess champion Jessica Lauser is determined to do many things: earn a graduate degree in Slavic languages, reach the rank of national chess master — and hang onto the Kansas City studio apartment she moved into earlier this year after a stint of homelessness. Lauser is a three-time United States Blind Chess Champion, having won the competition in 2018, 2019, and 2020. And while she can take down just about anyone in chess — particularly in games played in under five minutes — her impaired vision makes other aspects of her life more difficult to handle…
Jack Fact — According to Phys.org, there are about two million people living with sight loss in the UK. Although visually-impaired consumers are less likely than non-disabled consumers to have access to the internet and digital devices, the gap is narrowing. In 2012, 65% of visually-impaired consumers had access to a computer, compared to 79% of non-disabled consumers. By 2016 this had increased to 78% and 84% respectively.

How the Acropolis is becoming more accessible
December 11, 2020 | Source: Lonely Planet- Greece
When Davey McNelly moved to Athens eight years ago, he could not find an apartment or affordable house that was accessible for his power wheelchair. During his search, McNelly found his income was too high to qualify for accessible Housing and Urban Development apartments. Because of that, the only places available were apartments he could not properly use or expensive houses he would have to renovate. “It’s an ableist thing that so much of Athens housing stock isn’t made with accessibility in mind,” McNelly said…

A new report from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has found that substantial progress has been made in making airports more accessible for disabled people and passengers with reduced mobility across the UK. Introduced five years ago, the CAA’s accessibility framework ranks airports on their performance for passengers requiring assistance. The framework was the first of its kind globally and has overseen millions of pounds of investment made by airports toward improving people’s experiences…
Persons With Multiple Disabilities Need New Category – Dr. Donatile Kanimba
December 11, 2020 | Source: KT Press- Africa
Rwanda Organization of Persons with Deaf-Blindness (ROPDB) has requested the government to place persons with multiple disabilities in a special classification category if their challenges are to be addressed individually and collectively. The organization (ROPDB) which was formed out of the existing Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB) says that the current classification of persons with disabilities places them in the fifth category of others, which downplays their specific needs.

Japan’s disabled suffer as train stations increasingly go unstaffed
December 11, 2020 | Source: Kyodo News- Japan
Budget cuts and Japan’s widespread labor shortage issues have led rail operators to no longer staff many less frequented train stations, causing major accessibility problems for the nation’s disabled. Harumi Yoshida is just one person who has seen his ability to travel curtailed by the lack of assistance at train stations. A resident of Oita Prefecture, southwestern Japan, Yoshida often took a train to visit a friend, but the 67-year-old wheelchair user has been unable to do so since 2015 when a local station’s staff was cut entirely…

How the rise of tech-savvy and accessible housing villages looks to empower Scotland’s elderly population
December 13, 2020 | Source: The Scotsman- Scotland
Over the last few months, the coronavirus pandemic has shone a harsh light on how the elderly have suffered in isolation and loneliness more than most. Care homes have struggled under the strain of providing healthcare to vulnerable, elderly citizens round the clock, against the backdrop of a global health crisis which keeps families and loved ones at bay – only able to connect with one another through computer screens, windows and plastic screens. Complex needs for solutions beyond those found in average homes across Scotland – filled with sharp corners and fiddly switches that elude even the fittest among us…

Accessible railways would get more than 50,000 disabled people into work
December 16, 2020 | Source: THIIS- UK
Slow progress on making Scotland’s train stations step-free means disabled passengers will have to wait decades for an accessible rail network, a charity says. Disability charity Leonard Cheshire says 46% of Scotland’s train stations are inaccessible for disabled people. It says that Britain’s railway network will not be fully accessible until 2070 unless progress increases. In Scotland, only three stations – Breich, Dalwhinnie and Robroyston – have been upgraded over the past year to allow step-free access, according to the charity’s research…
Covid and disability: ‘I’ve lost two stone because I can’t get food’
December 14, 2020 | Source: BBC News- Scotland
On an average day before the pandemic, Dr Caroline Gould said it would take a 200-mile round trip to acquire all the groceries needed for her bespoke diet. A resident of Broadford on the Isle of Skye, Caroline has a severe form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which means her body lacks collagen and her joints are prone to dislocating. She last counted between 40 and 50 dislocations in one day. To manage the condition, Caroline keeps to a very strict diet and buys food from a number of different shops around the island – a routine that has been significantly disrupted throughout the pandemic…
Deaf culture and health care
December 14, 2020 | Source: CMAJ- Canada
Being part of the Deaf community is not the same as having hearing impairment. About 357 000 Canadians identify as being part of the Deaf community (capital-D “Deaf”), a distinct cultural and linguistic minority that uses sign language to communicate and for whom deafness is an alternative state, not a disability requiring correction.1 In contrast, about 3.2 million Canadians have hearing impairment, some of whom have severe to profound hearing loss (lower-case d “deaf”)…

Apathy can signal the onset of dementia years before other symptoms appear
December 15, 2020 | Source: Study Finds- UK
Apathy can be a dangerous warning sign for many conditions tied to mental health. While the loss of interest and motivation typically signals the onset of depression, hormone changes, or other mental conditions, a new study finds it may also be a red flag for dementia. Researchers from the University of Cambridge say feelings of apathy can predict if someone will develop dementia years before symptoms like memory loss ever appear. Frontotemporal dementia is one of the leading causes of dementia in younger patients. Doctors typically diagnose the condition in patients between 45 and 65 years-old…

Legally blind: taekwondo master. It might sound like a movie title, but for Joss Ingram it is the reality of 12 years of hard work. The 50-year-old obtained her fourth dan black belt in Wellington at the weekend. In doing so, she became New Zealand’s first legally blind taekwondo master. It was a surreal feeling for the Dunedin woman, who sparred with opponents, broke boards and performed various patterns for over two exhausting hours to pass her test. It was the physical aspect Ingram found most challenging, her limited vision merely an afterthought…

How audio professionals can protect their hearing
December 16, 2020 | Source: Installation- Germany
It’s an uncomfortable truth that audio professionals are a vulnerable group when it comes to hearing loss. However, unless you’re willing to drastically restrict the amount of audio you listen to, exposure to loud sounds is all but impossible to avoid. In basic terms, small hairs in your inner ear vibrate in response to sound waves and convert that sound energy into nerve pulses that travel to your brain to be converted into what you hear. When these hair cells are exposed to extended periods of noise or short bursts of high volume, they can become permanently damaged, resulting in Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)…
How we made GOV.UK more accessible

GOV.UK hosts half a million web pages, lots of documents and receives an average of 5.1 million visits a day – the true number is likely much higher as we only count users who accept cookies that measure website use. People come to GOV.UK to find government services and information, like learning to drive or viewing lockdown guidance. In the UK, at least 1 in 5 people have a long-term illness, impairment or disability, and many more have a temporary or situational disability. Our job on the GOV.UK Accessibility Team is to make sure GOV.UK can be used by the largest possible audience…

Leonard Cheshire report maps out the future for accessible and inclusive travel
December 17, 2020 | Source: THIIS- UK
According to research published this week by U.K. disability charity Leonard Cheshire, the inaccessibility of Britain’s rail network remains a major barrier to disabled people joining the workforce. Seeking, securing and maintaining employment requires a certain degree of confidence that travel to work can be, within reason, reliable, predictable and stress-free. However, in its latest report on railway accessibility entitled “Get On Board 2020: making the economic case for levelling up inclusive transport”, the charity has revealed how disabled people’s faith in the country’s rail infrastructure is at rock bottom…

We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
