October 23, 2024 | Source: DOT and HUFFPOST and CBS and The Points Guy and CNN
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced a $50 million penalty against American Airlines (American) for numerous serious violations of the laws protecting airline passengers with disabilities between 2019 and 2023. DOT’s investigation into American Airlines uncovered cases of unsafe physical assistance that at times resulted in injuries and undignified treatment of wheelchair users, in addition to repeated failures to provide prompt wheelchair assistance…

October 18, 2024 | Source: WBUR
Disabled advocates say they are hopeful that vice presidential candidate Tim Walz’s openness about his son’s non-verbal learning disorder will help challenge stereotypes and open more doors for policy change for American families. Here and Now’s Deepa Fernandes speaks with two parents with disabilities raising young children: AJ Link, president of the National Disabled Legal Professionals Association, and Dom Kelly, president and CEO of the coalition New Disabled South…
Jimmy Carter Voted Thanks to the GOP’s Least Favorite Law
October 18, 2024 | Source: Mother Jones
Soon after his 100th birthday, former President Jimmy Carter was able to vote in his home state of Georgia—in part thanks to protections under the Voting Rights Act. As his grandson Jason Carter explained in a CNN interview with Jake Tapper, voting assistance protections in Georgia allow family members to help cast absentee ballots (the vote can still be discarded if a signature or mark on the ballot does not match what is on file, per Georgia law)…
Full Frame: Inclusive Design
October 19, 2024 | Source: CGTN America
An estimated 1.3 billion people live with a significant disability, according to the World Health Organization. That’s 16 percent of the global population. They include people with vision, hearing and mobility challenges. How can communities be more accessible and inclusive? Chris Downey was at the top of his game as an architect when he lost his sight. But the disability didn’t end his career. In fact, he has become a global leader in designing buildings for the blind…
Getting an earful: Over-the-counter hearing aids help boost accessibility
October 19, 2024 | Source: Toledo Blade
Over-the-counter hearing aids appear to be alerting buyers’ ears a bit earlier in their auditory journeys. On average, people wait nearly nine years between an identified need for hearing aids and actually getting them, according to a 2019 study published in the National Library of Medicine. “A lot of times, the patients themselves are in denial,” said Nancy Gilman, an audiologist with ENT Physicians Inc. in Toledo. With FDA approval of over-the-counter hearing aids two years ago, research shows that the average age for that purchase was 62, rather than the average 64-year-old who seeks out a specialist…
NYC orders all new yellow taxis to be wheelchair accessible, but drivers gripe about cost
October 20, 2024 | Source: Gothamist and NY1
Every new yellow taxi in New York City must be wheelchair accessible under rules finalized by the Taxi and Limousine Commission on Friday, marking the latest step by officials to comply with a federal court order stemming from a lawsuit filed by disability advocates more than a decade ago. The new rules mean the TLC will only approve a new vehicle license to a yellow taxi medallion holder if their car is equipped with a wheelchair ramp and other safety features for disabled riders…
U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights Resolves Disability Compliance Review of St. Johns County School District in Florida
October 21, 2024 | Source: DOE
Today, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) secured a resolution agreement from the St. Johns County School District in Florida to ensure that its restraint policies and practices do not deny students with disabilities a free appropriate public education (FAPE). OCR’s review to date raised serious compliance concerns regarding the district’s civil rights obligations to students with disabilities pursuant to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (Title II) and their implementing regulations with respect to district restraint practices…
Resurgence Of ‘R-Word’ Alarms Disability Advocates
October 21, 2024 | Source: Disability Scoop
For a decade, disability advocates led a concerted effort to stomp out use of the word “retard.” Now they’re concerned that the language appears to be making a comeback. Online, in popular culture and in politics, use of what’s known as the “r-word” has rebounded after largely receding from the conversation, advocates say. Earlier this month, The New York Times reported that former President Donald Trump called Vice President Kamala Harris “retarded” during a meeting with donors…

Missourians with disabilities advocate for more accessible voting practices
October 22, 2024 | Source: KFVS12
With about two weeks before Election Day, many Hoosiers are creating their voting plans. Advocates say even with federal protections, Hoosiers with disabilities can still encounter a variety of barriers when they cast their ballot. Voting accommodations are required by federal law. For example, the Americans with Disabilities Act requires polling locations to meet accessibility standards and the Help America Vote Act requires an electronic voting machine at every polling location…

October 23, 2024 | Source: GBH
Raising a child can be an immeasurable source of joy, love and meaning. There are also, inevitably, times when it can be extremely challenging. For some families, those challenges are amplified when their child is diagnosed with a rare neurological condition. Mary Pederson’s son Carter has lissencephaly, a rare neurological disorder also known as “smooth brain syndrome.” She joined GBH’s All Things Considered host Arun Rath to discuss the unique trials and triumphs of parenting under such extraordinary circumstances. What follows is a lightly edited transcript…
Guide dog discrimination by Uber and Lyft impacts ride accessibility
October 23, 2024 | Source: Long Beach Current
The Americans with Disabilities Act protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination including within transportation. However, Uber and Lyft are failing to protect their blind customers with guide dogs. The National Federation of the Blind held a Rideshare Rally in San Francisco on Oct. 15, demanding the two ride-share services end their discriminatory ride denials and cancellations against guide dog handlers. They previously filed a lawsuit against Uber, which was settled and sent a demand letter to Lyft…

Employee loses ADA lawsuit for failing to engage with employer over alternative accommodations
October 23, 2024 | Source: McAfee and Taft
A federal appeals court in Tennessee recently upheld an order dismissing a former teacher’s disability bias lawsuit, finding that the teacher’s failure to engage in discussions with his employer over alternative accommodations doomed his claim. The teacher claimed that the school board had unlawfully refused to let him continue working from home after the school district returned to in-person teaching following the COVID-19 pandemic. The district court rejected this claim, and the appeals court agreed…

Accessibility committee not consulted over Guelph’s new encampment bylaw
October 18, 2024 | Source: CTV News- Canada
The City of Guelph’s Public Space Use bylaw went into effect earlier this month, but the city’s Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) says they weren’t consulted about the changes, which they feel could create barriers. They say the disabled community wasn’t taken into consideration when it comes to homeless encampments, and that both communities intertwine, but the bylaw doesn’t reflect that. “There was a mistake. There was a communications breakdown. Commitments were not honoured,” said AAC member Mike “O’dah ziibing” Ashkewe, during Thursday’s meeting – the first one since the bylaw went into effect…
Auckland FC supporter seeks to improve stadium wheelchair accessibility
October 18, 2024 | Source: Friends of Football- New Zealand
Sport should be accessible to everyone – and when it isn’t, it sucks. That’s the message from Auckland football fan Jonno Ross, a wheelchair user of 13 years after a car crash and broken neck left him without the use of his legs and without one of his good mates. Attending sports events at large stadiums can be chaotic for an able-bodied fan, Ross tells the NZ Herald. For those who use a wheelchair or have another disability, even the smallest barrier to access can become a major one…

October 18, 2024 | Source: CTV News- Canada

Flynn is 23 years old and has cerebral palsy. He depends on the bus to get him to and from his job with Easter Seals Nova Scotia. He’s become frustrated with what he says is an unreliable service that shows up late, or sometimes not at all…

Inside the world’s first TV station run for and by people with learning disabilities
October 19, 2024 | Source: BBC- UK
It’s perhaps no surprise that the décor of TV BRA’s new studio is shocking pink. It’s the favourite colour of two of the station’s reporters, Emily Ann Riedel – who is wearing a pink top when I visit – and Petter Bjørkmo. “I even had pink hair!” Bjørkmo tells me, laughing, before adding that he had to get rid of it “because I am a reporter – reporters have to look decent.” All the reporters at TV BRA – which means “TV Good” – are disabled or autistic; most have a learning disability…

Halloween is a time for trick-or-treating, creative costumes, and fun-filled celebrations for most Canadian families. However, for some, it is a time filled with fear and anxiety. For those who face barriers, physical or otherwise, Halloween can be an isolating time of year. Inspired by their clients, their community connections, and the success of last year’s event, Oatley Vigmond is again hosting Barrie’s only accessible Halloween Village on Sunday, Oct. 27…
Witney: Disability benefits reject ‘worried about feeding family’
October 20, 2024 | Source: BBC- UK
A man who was turned down for disability benefits twice, despite having a chronic stomach condition, has told family members he is worried about how he will feed his children. Type 1 diabetic Ashley Hall, from Witney, Oxfordshire, was signed off work with intestinal pain and later diagnosed with bile acid malabsorption. A tribunal took his side after he was initially told he was not eligible for personal independence payments (PIP). But the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has now appealed this decision, leaving him without an income…
New resources keep students with disability safer online
October 21, 2024 | Source: The Educator- Australia
Across Australia, more than three quarters of teenagers living with disability are exposed to potentially harmful online content, compared with the national average of 62%. In response to this, new online safety resources have been launched to ensure that young people with disability are not only supported whilst online but that their parents, guardians, and carers are empowered to have meaningful conversations about online safety. The Be Safe Online resources, developed by Scope and the eSafety Commissioner’s Office, are the culmination of 18 months of direct input from young people with disabilities…

Ace Cabs argues there’s been no contract breach for accessible service
October 21, 2024 | Source: Collingwood News- Canada
Ace Transportation Group has come forward to resist any implication the company has broken the contract they signed with the Town of Collingwood in March 2023 to provide accessible taxi service to residents for two years. Ace argues they’re still providing the service and “exceeding” the obligations set out in the contract with the town, even with reduced hours as of Oct. 1. The reduced hours were part of a discussion at council earlier this month, with councillors expressing frustration that the service, which is subsidized by the town to the tune of $84,000 a year…

Accessibility in urban planning involves designing infrastructure and public spaces to meet the needs of all individuals, particularly the most vulnerable, the disabled and the elderly, ensuring that pedestrians can navigate safely without being overshadowed by vehicles. Currently, pedestrians navigating Kingston’s streets poses significant challenges, where sidewalks are often obstructed or encroached upon, forcing both able-bodied and disabled individuals to traverse hazardous environments…
