How Digital Engagement Will Evolve In 2022
February 25, 2020 | Source: Forbes
The growth in remote-first digital communication shows no sign of slowing in 2022. The ongoing pandemic has accelerated the reliance on connected infrastructure and digital services for the daily functioning of society, meaning that digital interactions now define how we communicate. But this transformation has created a host of challenges for organizations as they struggle to keep up to date and compliant with the ever-evolving regulatory landscape. The problem for regulated industries is particularly acute…
Does Your Practice Have a Website? Watch Out for ‘Drive-By Lawsuits’
February 25, 2022 | Source: Medpage Today
Does anybody remember the Yellow Pages? You know, those bookshelf-breaking phone directories that once inhabited just about every kitchen pantry? The Yellow Pages are still around, but are mainly digital these days. Taking their place, of course, are websites. From donuts to doctors, consumers everywhere today depend on search engines and websites for information about what to buy, what to eat, what to wear, who to date — and, obviously, where and from whom to seek healthcare…

February 26, 2022 | Source: Women Fitness Magazine
Designing Accessible Products For Users With Disabilities : Accessibility is the need of people with disabilities regarding using specific services, products, and facilities. To ensure that people with disabilities can enjoy the same comfort as others, various companies are creating devices and products to meet their needs. The attempt to meet the diverse requirements of millions of people with disabilities through product design is generally termed as “accessible design”. Many companies are approaching accessibility as a major input mode, to designing something to offer a complete user experience…

Study shows potential link between eating meat and multiple sclerosis development
February 26, 2022 | Source: Gut Health News
Several genetic and environmental factors cause multiple sclerosis and a new report suggests these may include eating meat and having a less diverse gut. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects millions of people worldwide. There is no singular cause of MS, but some research suggests outside factors such as where a person lives or their diet can influence their risk of having it. Gut bacteria are of particular interest because certain bacterial species regulate the immune response and are affected by a person’s diet…
How to Report With Care on Disability
February 27, 2022 | Source: The New York Times
When Starbucks opened a “Signing Store” in Washington, D.C., in October 2018, some of my well-meaning friends sent me articles on the subject, remarking on how “cool” it was. As a hard-of-hearing woman, I saw it differently: Although I was happy to learn that Starbucks was trying to be more inclusive, to me, hiring people with disabilities isn’t a big news story — and neither is a corporation making one store accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing customers. I felt that the real story was how some of those workers had master’s degrees, yet they had trouble finding jobs elsewhere because of their disability…
Physical fitness linked to lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease
February 27, 2022 | Source: American Academy of Neurology
People who are more physically fit are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than people who are less physically fit, according to a preliminary study released today, February 27, 2022, that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 74th Annual Meeting being held in person in Seattle, April 2 to 7, 2022 and virtually, April 24 to 26, 2022. “One exciting finding of this study is that as people’s fitness improved, their risk of Alzheimer’s disease decreased—it was not an all-or-nothing proposition,” said study author Edward Zamrini, MD, of the Washington VA Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and a member of the American Academy of Neurology…

According to the letter, the rulemaking process began in 2010 “under Titles II and III of the ADA” but was withdrawn in 2017. Last year, US representative Ted Budd (R-NC) led the re-introduction of a bill proposing an Online Accessibility Act, which was initially introduced in October 2020…

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s son, Zain, died at age 26 on Monday following a lifelong battle with cerebral palsy, according to reports. The tech firm informed its top executives of Zain Nadella’s passing in an email. The message asked the executives to send their thoughts and prayers to the Nadella family. “I know we all want to support Satya during this difficult time,” Microsoft’s chief people officer Kathleen Hogan said in the message, according to Geekwire. “The best way right now is to hold him and his family in your thoughts and prayers, while allowing them the privacy and peace to process such a grave loss.”…
Feds investigating complaints the Houston Rodeo is not in compliance with American Disabilities Act
March 1, 2022 | Source: KHOU & FOX 26 Houston
The U.S. Attorney’s Office will conduct a compliance review of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to evaluate accessibility for the disabled, U.S. Attorney Jennifer B. Lowery announced Tuesday. The investigation was launched after complaints the HLSR violated the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). The allegations include failing to provide accessible parking, accessible seating, and accessible routes at NRG Park where the three-week event is held. Rodeo officials said Tuesday they were not aware of specific complaints but said they would work with NRG Park, the event’s facility, to make adjustments if they were needed…
We cannot deny disabled voters equal protection under the law
March 1, 2022 | Source: The Hill
New state election laws have prompted debate about whether they will make it more difficult for people to vote. Missing in that national conversation is consideration of equal protection for an often-overlooked class of American voters: the disabled, who have special accessibility needs. Important strides have been made to ensure that Americans with disabilities can exercise their right to vote. Nevertheless, too many disabled individuals face persistent risks and challenges that other voters do not — it’s an untenable situation that may deny them equal protection under the law…
Why billions in Medicaid funds for people with disabilities are being held up
March 2, 2022 | Source: NPR
Matthew Southern, 35, who has intellectual and developmental disabilities, is able to stay out of an institution because health aides paid through a Medicaid program assist him and his roommate with ordinary tasks. But amid a worker shortage worsened by the pandemic, Southern’s father, Dan, has had to step in to fill in gaps in his son’s care by volunteering at their home 45 minutes away from his northwestern Atlanta suburb. He blames the low pay across the industry. “No one wants to work for $12 an hour,” Dan Southern said. “People can work at Burger King and make more money.”…

From hiking, camping, and trekking through the snowy terrain these families use a specialized backpack designed by Chandler that allows them to carry their family members who are unable to walk. “Redefining accessibility is a message for the disabled community as well as the able-bodied,” he shared in an online video. “We need each other to make it happen through our creative and courageous effort to give it a try.”…
Justice Department Finds that Colorado Violates the Americans with Disabilities Act
March 3, 2022 | Source: Department of Justice
The Justice Department concluded today that Colorado unnecessarily segregates people with physical disabilities in nursing facilities, in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Supreme Court’s decision in Olmstead v. L.C. The department’s findings, detailed in a letter to Colorado Governor Jared Polis, follow a thorough and multi-year investigation into the state’s system of care for people with physical disabilities. The ADA and the Olmstead ruling require state and local governments to make services available to people with disabilities in the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs, regardless of age or type of disability…
Mentoring and teaching women with disabilities in universities
March 3, 2022 | Source: Times Higher Education
Women with disabilities in academia face “double the trouble of being a woman and disabled,” meaning their identities in two historically disadvantaged groups often leave them in particular positions of vulnerability within the ivory tower. Women academics have been further challenged by the pandemic. Only an estimated 1.5 per cent to four per cent of academics have disabilities, compared with about one quarter of the general population. Without role models, it is more difficult for women with disabilities to recognise career paths enabled by higher education…

A team of officials, including the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety, last week inspected the Tiruvottiyur Theradi and Wimco Nagar depot stations built under phase-I extension. Ramping up accessibility- Audit aims to help arts venues improve service for broad scope of disabled patrons and artists
February 25, 2022 | Source: Winnipeg Free Press- Canada
The music has ended, the house lights have risen, but Peter Tonge isn’t ready to leave. It’s not because he wants to meet the band or watch the musicians load out their gear. He would rather head out with the post-concert crush, but his accessible taxi hasn’t arrived yet. “There’s nothing worse than everybody in the venue standing around wanting to go home and your ride isn’t coming for another hour,” says Tonge, a community consultant, wheelchair user and an avid concertgoer. It’s an anxiety-inducing experience that could easily be remedied with a little more information from the concert venue…

February 26, 2022 | Source: The Brussels Times- Belgium
On Friday, the new railway investment plan focussing on more accessible stations, improved services and more freight transport was approved by the federal government. A total of €250 million will be freed up for the planned rail investments to ensure railways become the backbone of mobility in the country. This Transition Plan contributes fully to that,” he said in a statement…
Call for progress on mobility scooter bus rules on Isle of Man
February 27, 2022 | Source: BBC- UK
The Isle of Man risks becoming “a laughing stock” if UK rules allowing mobility scooters on buses are not adopted, an MHK has said. They are currently banned due to safety concerns, a stance under review by the Department of Infrastructure (DOI). Chris Thomas said the rules in the UK were “fair and reasonable”. The DOI said it had now invited disabled bus users to join a group examining the use of scooters along with wider accessibility issues. Created by UK advocacy group the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) and backed by the UK government, a voluntary code for the scooters on low-floor buses was introduced in the UK in 2011…

In March, China plans to have 115 of its superbly trained and intensely driven athletes compete on the Chinese Paralympic Team at the Winter Games in Beijing. China has dominated the medal count at the last five consecutive Paralympic Games and is projected to sweep again this year. Its method for success? Substantial state funding and a highly competitive track for identified athletic talent. “China was always behind disabled athletes as an acceptable symbol of China’s modernity that the government cares for the people,” says Susan Brownell, an anthropology professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis who studies big sporting events…

Bega Valley Shire Council has committed to improving inclusive infrastructure around the region, including upgrades at Pambula Beach, Bermagui’s Bruce Steer Pool, and recently announced improvements to Short Point in Merimbula. Although moves towards providing accessible places for people with mobility challenges are great, disability activists say this is only one piece of the puzzle…
Able 2.0: Accessibility, A Fundamental Requirement For Ensuring Inclusion For Persons With Disability
February 28, 2022 | Source: NDTV-Dettol Banega Swasth- India
According to experts, ‘accessibility’ is one of the most important concerns facing persons with disabilities which has been further aggravated due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions imposed because of it. The pandemic which has affected everyone over the past two years has come down harshly upon persons with disabilities, many of whom were already suffering from poverty, the direct results of an inaccessible environment, say experts. While the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development states that disability cannot be a reason or criteria for lack of access to development programmes and the realisation of human rights…
Real benefits of making your workplace accessible to everyone
March 1, 2022 | Source: The CEO Magazine- Australia
Disabled people make up 18 per cent of the Australian population – and probably even more if a disability is not diagnosed or disclosed. That means your employees, your clients and customers, your colleagues, your family members, your friends – they’ll comprise disabled people. It’s also why it’s so important that your organisation is accessible and inclusive because your disabled employees need to feel valued, trusted and able to do their jobs. The social model of disability means that barriers created by society can prevent disabled people from having full access to work, health care, entertainment and art…

March 3, 2022 | Source: The Indian Express- India
On Tuesday, 23-year-old Kavya Mukhija and her family were excited to find a theatre that was wheelchair-accessible near their house in Dwarka. They booked tickets for the 6.10 pm show of Alia Bhatt-starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi through bookmyshow.in, which showed that the PVR at Vegas Mall was wheelchair accessible. But they landed there to find that the seats were just regular ones. When Kavya was asked to move from her wheelchair to the regular seats, she refused, following which she was asked to sit next to a row of stairs near the exit, away from her family…
