Disability rights advocates raise concerns over federal lawsuit
February 25, 2025 | Source: KTVH
Republican state attorneys general are declaring their continued support for a landmark federal law protecting disabled people’s rights, after parents expressed fears of losing services for their disabled children because of a GOP lawsuit opposing transgender rights. The attorneys general of 17 states, led by Texas, told a federal judge this week that a lawsuit they filed in September targets only a rule imposed last year by then-President Joe Biden’s administration declaring that transgender Americans are protected by a 1973 law barring discrimination against disabled people…

The Grandma Stand is a portable pop-up offering New Yorkers a place to take a seat and take a breath. It’s a place where you can find a sympathetic ear or some sound advice…
Nonprofits Sue Over Trump’s “Anti-Equity” Orders
February 21, 2025 | Source: Nonprofit Quarterly
Several civil and human rights nonprofits have sued to stop the Trump administration from cutting off federal funds and violating their constitutional rights to free speech. The lawsuit focuses on three executive orders issued by Trump during his first two days in office, which aim to eliminate diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and accessibility programs (EO 14151); deny the existence and rights of transgender people (EO 14168); and end the use of diversity considerations in federal funding decisions (EO 14173)…

I’m aware that’s probably the understatement of the century, but it’s true,” wrote Burcaw, who has spinal muscular atrophy, in his caption that explained why he felt that way for so long…
Accessibility Initiatives Are Taking a Hit Across the Sciences
February 22, 2025 | Source: The New York Times
Tyler Nelson, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Florida, studies the neurobiology of pain, a choice partly motivated by his own frustrations with a neuromuscular disability. Last October, he applied for a grant at the National Institutes of Health that, if awarded, would support his dream of someday running his own lab. But, earlier in February, he learned that his application, which took six months to pull together, was about to be thrown out…
Discouraging News for Disability Advocates
February 22, 2025 | Source: Word on Fire
On October 2008, Congress passed a bill called the Prenatally and Postnatally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act, which came to be called simply the “Kennedy-Brownback Bill” after the two US senators who introduced it: Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts and Sam Brownback from Kansas. The stated purpose of the legislation was to require the federal government to make up-to-date, evidence-based information available about conditions that could be subject to prenatal or early postnatal diagnosis—conditions like Down syndrome and others…
Americans with disabilities warn protections are vanishing in Trump’s DEI rollback

March at Green Square Park protests policies affecting marginalized groups
February 25, 2025 | Source: KGAN
People with disabilities say President Trump’s DEI purge is eroding health care, education and legal protections they’ve only won in recent decades. The Trump administration has taken actions that undermine accessibility measures — critical for leveling the playing field for people with disabilities — as part of its efforts targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. “It’s very clear that there is an orchestrated attack by conservatives to dismantle the rights of people with disabilities,” said Shawn Murinko, a Washington resident who has cerebral palsy…
People with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by natural disasters
February 23, 2025 | Source: NBC News
As Reda Rountree and her family packed their bags and prepared to flee their Highland Park home on Jan. 7 amid Eaton Fire evacuations, she realized in horror that her wheelchair would not fit in their SUV with all of the luggage. “I cried,” said Rountree, who has used the chair since 2023 because of long Covid and POTS. “I stood by the car realizing: ‘OK, wait. I’m not going to have a way to be mobile. What am I going to do?’” “If I didn’t have my kids and my husband to help me get out of the house, I don’t know what would have happened to me,” she added…

February 24, 2025 | Source: Prince William Times
Public playgrounds would be added to the list of places in Virginia required to be fully accessible for people with disabilities, under legislation headed to Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s desk. While current Virginia code explicitly states public facilities must be fully accessible for people with disabilities, Del. ‘Breakdowns in the system’: Wheelchair rugby team stranded at Louisville airport
February 24, 2025 | Source: Louisville Courier Journal
By the second time United Airlines de-boarded Seth McBride’s plane, he knew he was in for a long haul. McBride was one of 20 wheelchair rugby players attempting to fly home on Feb. 16 from a tournament held in Louisville. The team had notified United Airlines it would need additional assistance and aisle chairs to board the plane prior to arrival. But when they got to their gate, there was only one attendant with a singular aisle chair — a type of wheelchair used to transport passengers through the narrow aisles of an aircraft…

The hunt for a faster, more accessible Alzheimer’s test
February 26, 2025 | Source: Nature
People with dementia don’t just lose their memories — they often battle depression, too, with specialists estimating up to half of patients experience this side effect. But experts are now raising doubts about whether treatments meant to help are doing more harm than good, as new research suggests that some commonly prescribed antidepressants might actually speed up cognitive decline. “Depressive symptoms can both worsen cognitive decline and impair quality of life, so it is important to treat them,” said Sara Garcia Ptacek, researcher at the Karolinska Institutet and an author of the new study…

Business Entrance Accessibility Law, Never Enforced, Expected to Be Scrapped
February 25, 2025 | Source: San Francisco Public Press
Magan Li used to lie awake at night thinking about the tripping hazard created by a large step leading into her store on one of Chinatown’s steep streets. Li’s shop sells items for traditional rituals like funerals and ancestral ceremonies. When she took over the storefront in 2007, she reached out to multiple contractors and architects, hoping to pave over the steps to make her store more accessible. Each time, the answer was the same: The city wouldn’t approve the project because the pavement would obstruct the sidewalk…

The Airbnb of Accessible Travel
February 26, 2025 | Source: Amplitude Magazine
A decade ago, when Lorraine Woodward proposed building a seaside family retreat, her teenage sons pushed back hard. “The boys were like, ‘What the heck, Mom, we can’t even get on the beach!’” she laughs. “You realize we have disabilities, right?” Woodward, a full-time wheelchair user herself, completely understood. But she was tired of searching (mostly in vain) for destinations that could accommodate her unorthodox crew. “We didn’t travel as much as I had hoped we would, because it was really hard,” says the 63-year-old Woodward. “Imagine—wheelchairs for three of us, scooters, luggage…
The Harsh Truth About Disability Inclusion
February 26, 2025 | Source: Time
My biggest fear is that I will never see true disability inclusion in my lifetime. Dare I say it—my biggest fear is that none of us will. For years, disability advocates have fought to break down barriers, to be seen, valued, and included—not as a charity case, not as a box to be ticked, but as equal contributors to society. Yet, despite progress, recent global shifts in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies are undoing critical steps forward. In some cases, these policies have been misunderstood, misapplied, and now, weaponized against us…
DEI and Accessibility, Explained
February 27, 2025 | Source: ACLU
Across the country, right-wing groups are working to dismantle long-standing anti-discrimination protections and statutory mandates by targeting what they broadly refer to as diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). These attacks on DEIA are not new. Rather, they’re part of a broader strategy to discredit DEIA and weaponize the term itself, expanding its definition to encompass any ideas right-wing politicians disagree with under the guise of opposing “identity politics.”…
Jack Fact — According to a recent study by Nature Medicine, as the US population ages, the number of people diagnosed with dementia each year is projected to double – from about 514,000 cases in 2020 to about 1 million a year by 2060.

Sarah, who is autistic, also has Ehlers Danlos syndrome which causes a range of physical disabilities. “I frequently use a wheelchair or crutches, and if it’s a hot day, I also have thermo-dysregulation, so not having to walk too far from the car to the polling place is really important,” they said. Some of the challenges autistic people face when it comes to voting include crowded spaces, long lines, wait times, and sensory impacts from harsh lighting and loud noise…

Accessibility must be a White Rock priority: advocate
February 25, 2025 | Source: North Delta Reporter- Canada
White Rock accessibility advocate Susan Bains said a recent decision not to add beach accessibility to the city’s list of strategic priorities is indicative of systemic attitudes, both in society and on council. She added that council should be prioritizing specific plans to improve beach accessibility, which, she noted, is mandated by both the B.C. Human Rights Code and the Accessible British Columbia Act. Bains (herself a wheelchair user , and co-founder of the Equal Access Collective, which successfully campaigned for the city to install an accessibility mat on the pier last year)…
Make sure polling stations are accessible despite the snow, advocates tell city ahead of election day
February 25, 2025 | Source: CBC- Canada
Access to polling stations must be a top priority for the city and the province with the Ontario election just two days away, advocates for people with disabilities say. After two major winter storms that swept the city, some Toronto sidewalks remain only partially cleared, with melting snow still left on many sidewalks and snowbanks on the sides of roads — making getting around difficult for people with disabilities, advocates say. When the house she was renting from a family member was put on the market, Ms Owen said “severe competition” in the property market made the task of finding a new home difficult before she even considered her accessibility requirements. “I knew – knowing what the housing stock is like – that I was never going to find somewhere as a wheelchair user that I could buy, move into and not make any changes,” she said…
