Advocates call on Arizona to prioritize the disabled in vaccine rollout
March 4, 2021 | Source: 12 News
Across the U.S., online registrations for the COVID-19 vaccine are failing to consider some of the most vulnerable groups of people: seniors, those with disabilities, and certain racial and socioeconomic groups. The online registration processes were launched quickly (rightly so) in response to the rushed vaccine rollout. Usually, rapidly spun-up sites cater to the general public—the mythical “average users”—not these specific groups. But these groups are the main users of government vaccination registration websites, at least initially…

The National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina says opportunities have grown for blind and visually impaired people over the years, but there are more barriers to be broken. David Houck is the executive director of the Federation Center of the Blind, which serves as the headquarters of the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina. The organization offers a wide variety of programs and services designed to “encourage independence and productivity, and to promote respectful attitudes about blind people and blindness.”…
The Pandemic Slowed 2020 Federal ADA Title III Filings But 2021 May Be a Record Breaker
February 25, 2021 | Source: Seyfarth Shaw
Seyfarth Synopsis: ADA Title III lawsuits filed in 2020 fell slightly from last year’s high, but still topped 10,000 for the second time since we started tracking these lawsuits in 2013. Maybe it was adjusting to working from home, overseeing children during the work day, or just the shock of the pandemic, but the ADA Title III plaintiffs’ bar filed far fewer lawsuits in April and May 2020. This ultimately led to an overall reduction in the number of cases filed in 2020 as compared to 2019. Plaintiffs filed 10,982 ADA Title III lawsuits in 2020, compared to 11,053 filed in 2019…
Zoom Pledges Provide Closed Captioning For All Free Users — A Win For Hearing Health Advocates
February 26, 2021 | Source: Here And Now
Zoom is pledging to give all users free caption services after advocates pushed for the platform to make closed captions more accessible during the pandemic. Back in November, hearing health advocate Shari Eberts joined Here & Now to discuss an open letter she wrote in April that turned into a petition, garnering 58,000 signatures from others with hearing loss. While the result of that effort led to Google and Microsoft removing their captions from behind its paywall, Zoom was slow to do the same…
Activists ask state to move Michiganders with disabilities up on vaccine priority list
February 26, 2021 | Source: Michigan Radio
Michiganders aged 18-64 with disabilities are currently in group 1C in terms of priority for the COVID-19 vaccine. Disability rights activists are asking the state to move them to group 1B, along with the support staff and other people who provide them care. In a letter to the governor and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition asked Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services director Elizabeth Hertel to consider moving the group…
Walpole community rallies around popular sports photographer Tim Hoffman after his diagnosis of ALS
February 27, 2021 | Source: Milford Daily News
A top-notch photographer quietly observes the nature of things, living or inanimate. What catches his eye may be distant and subtle, or right in front of him. There are pictures he expects to take, maybe even assigned to, and pictures that beg to be taken at a moment’s notice. The surprise picture. Tim Hoffman has snapped thousands of them, primarily in Walpole, where he is seemingly known, legendarily, to every citizen in town for his body of work. He’s taken sports shots at high school games, action shots that spoke for themselves, and for photos that don’t even need to be captioned…
How Can Cities Improve The Quality Of Life Of Disabled People?
February 28, 2021 | Source: Tomorrow City
The need to design inclusive cities is becoming increasingly clear across the globe. However, not all urban models being designed today meet this objective, particularly regarding disability. It could be said that we have a historic debt in terms of disability. If we study the past, only a few cities wanted to understand that it was not enough to apply a Renaissance standard in the strict sense to the development of public services. It has taken a long time to understand the benefits of placing humans as the standard measure of all things. Now it is time to think about… which human to use as a standard?…
On the fast track to accessible subways: The MTA says it’s advancing the goal
March 1, 2021 | Source: New York Daily News
The pandemic hit our heroic workforce hard and devastated the MTA financially. But our commitment to achieving system-wide accessibility for transit has not wavered: even with less money to spend and less certainty about future funding, we have kept advancing accessibility projects. Our priorities remain unchanged. To speed our recovery from the pandemic, we more than ever need a transit system that truly serves all New Yorkers. I lead the new MTA Construction & Development organization that last year consolidated all MTA planning, design and construction into a single agency-wide group…

March 2, 2021 | Source: WMFE
People With Disabilities Face Significant Hurdles As Covid-19 Protocols Have Made It Harder For Them To Attend Meetings Of The Florida House And Senate. Florida residents with disabilities who wish to have their voices heard by state lawmakers in Tallahassee have been struggling with accessibility issues since even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Last month, Common Cause Florida and 30 other state organizations sent a letter detailing how the legislature could make it easier for them to participate in meetings…
Senator Tammy Duckworth Wants FDR Memorial to Be Accessible for People with All Disabilities
March 2, 2021 | Source: TIME & The Hill
It’s been 20 years since disability advocates won the fight to have the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C. depict the former president in a wheelchair at the site. But they say there is more work to do to make the space fully accessible to all people with disabilities and serve as the “monument to freedom” that former President Bill Clinton said it would be upon the statue’s dedication. Sen. Tammy Duckworth on Tuesday will introduce a resolution with D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton calling on the National Park Service to improve the memorial’s accessibility to blind and low-vision visitors…
How To Talk To Your Kid About Disabilities
March 2, 2021 | Source: Huff Post
We know the value of talking to kids about inclusion, whether it’s in regard to race, gender, religion or sexuality. But what many conversations about diversity often leave out is disability. Although the disability rights movement has made immense progress over the years, we still have a long way to go when it comes to understanding the experiences of disabled people and creating a more accessible world. “Parents of the next generations hold a key when it comes to dismantling the ableist society by teaching the next generations to embrace disability as diversity,” said Marie Dagenais-Lewis…
The Huge Cost Of Ignoring Disabled People’s Sophisticated Understanding Of Disaster Planning
March 3, 2021 | Source: Forbes- Denise Brodey
Most often government agencies and businesses think of people with disabilities as costly because they have unique needs, which couldn’t be farther from the truth when it comes to emergency planning. In Texas this February, emergency management officials and philanthropic organizations worked tirelessly to help residents. But the 3 million Texans who identify as disabled say they were too late—as in years too late. They question why their insights and experience are ignored and say continued marginalization at the highest levels comes at a huge cost to all lives…
Practice website accessibility: A new wave of AwDA litigation
March 4, 2021 | Source: California Dental Association
Even the most skilled and seasoned dentists face professional liability claims. But how would you feel if a lawsuit were filed by someone who wasn’t a patient — or who hadn’t even driven past your office doors? There’s a rising wave of litigation based on violations of the Americans with Disability Act (AwDA). In addition to “drive by” lawsuits grounded in physical barriers to access, “click by” lawsuits are being filed in increasing numbers. Plaintiffs target office websites that are not accessible to those with hearing, vision or learning impairments…
TheaterWorks increases accessibility by adding American Sign Language interpretation to productions
March 4, 2021 | Source: Hartford Courant
TheaterWorks Hartford continues to innovate as it navigates the new theater landscape pockmarked by the COVID pandemic. The current production in the theater’s all-online (so far) 2020-21 season, “Talkin’ to This Chick Sippin’ Magic Potion” by James Anthony Tyler, features a deaf character, played by a hearing-impaired actor, so TheaterWorks realized it was a good time to explore adding American Sign Language Interpretation to the mix. TheaterWorks had already introduced Closed Captioning to its virtual programming, but ASL allowed for even more accessibility…

March 4, 2021 | Source: Catholic Standard
The new chaplain of St. Francis of Assisi Deaf Catholic Church in Landover Hills, Maryland, steps into the position with a lifelong understanding of what it means to be Deaf and an intense interest in ensuring that deafness be treated as a culture, not as a disability. Father Min Seo Park arrived in the United States from his native Seoul, South Korea, in late January to take up the triple job description of serving as chaplain at St. Francis of Assisi, as chaplain to the Catholic community at Gallaudet University and providing pastoral ministry to the Archdiocese of Washington’s Deaf population overall…

Accessible taxis should be a bit more accessible by fall
February 25, 2021 | Source: The Coast Halifax- Canada
Halifax Regional Council is finally doing something concrete about the dismal situation for folks who use mobility devices and want a little spontaneity in their lives. This week it voted to include the procurement of an on-demand accessible transportation service in this year’s upcoming budget. The plan is to subsidize a fleet of accessible taxis so that those who need it have the same access to on-demand transit as folks in Halifax who don’t use a wheelchair or mobility device, and can whip out their phone and have a cab outside their house in minutes…

Veterans take a shot at ‘accessible’ sport of archery
February 28, 2021 | Source: CBC- Canada
An archery event for wounded or disabled veterans on P.E.I. was cut short this weekend after new COVID-19 health measures were imposed, but not before they got to hit a few bull’s-eyes. The event, called Soldier On, was hosted by the P.E.I. Archery Association to introduce veterans to the sport. Sunday morning’s session was cancelled, but about eight people participated on Saturday in Covehead and they were “super pumped,” said Duncan Crawford, head coach of the national Paralympics archery team…

Breaking barriers: Supporting students with disabilities to progress to university
March 2, 2021 | Source: The Irish Times- Ireland
Education can be rigid. People with disabilities often miss out on learning and employment opportunities – not because they lack any ability but because an ableist system doesn’t give them the tools they need. But, more and more, the system is bending to meet the needs of learners. One game-changer for students with print disabilities – including blindness, visual impairment or dyslexia affecting their ability to read – is the National Council for the Blind of Ireland’s Bookshare.ie, which provides an extensive catalogue of academic books in alternative formats including braille, large print, audio and digital…
Accessible Design Matters—RNIB Creates A Revolutionary Prototype Of A Pregnancy Test For Blind And Partially Sighted People
March 3, 2021 | Source: Forbes- UK
To start changing public opinion on personal privacy and control of information through the lens of accessibility, as well as challenge businesses to build accessibility into product designs might look like a very hard task to do, because, essentially, you need to convince people that inaccessible design is bad design. And when you think about it – it really is that only when we have a problem (especially if it’s related to our health) we start seeing a full array of challenges connected to it…
Electronic Household Items Will Now Be More Accessible For Disabled Citizens
March 3, 2021 | Source: RaillyNews- Turkey
Working to facilitate the lives of disabled citizens, the Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Services is expanding its scope by including electronic household items in its accessibility studies. The Ministry has started a study on the applications that have been made that the tools and equipment related to basic information technologies, especially television, do not have the equipment suitable for disabled access, and that the devices such as smart control and smart TV, which are suitable for disabled access, are insufficient to meet the needs of the visually impaired…

Union of Equality: European Commission presents Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030
March 3, 2021 | Source: EU News
Despite all efforts, persons with disabilities are still at a higher risk of poverty and social exclusion than persons without disabilities. Access to healthcare, lifelong learning, employment, and leisure remains difficult, participation in political life is limited, and persons with disabilities are still discriminated against. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities. Over the past ten years, the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020 placed support for persons with disabilities high on the agenda, and it brought improvement in the areas of accessibility…
Western University students hopeful new report will lead to accessible campus
March 3, 2021 | Source: CBC- Canada
Ashton Forrest says her experience as someone with a disability at Western University has been frustrating. The master’s student uses a mobility scooter and encounters numerous barriers a day on campus. They range from physical ones, like trying to fit her scooter in narrow spaces just to access food services, to experiences with others, such as students moving her scooter without asking because it’s, “in the way.” While she recognizes the university is a long way from eliminating these barriers, she says it is moving in the right direction…
Bill to Fine Israeli Cities for Not Making Buildings Accessible Tabled for Now
March 3, 2021 | Source: Haaretz- Israel
After pressure from mayors and the Interior Ministry, a government discussion on an amendment that would allow for financial and other sanctions on municipalities that have not implemented accessibility regulations has been postponed. The move comes even though the amendment to the Equal Rights For Persons With Disabilities Law, which requires local governments to make their services accessible to people with disabilities, was passed 16 years ago…
COVID-19 has made education more accessible for university students with mobility disabilities
March 3, 2021 | Source: CBC- Canada
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a struggle for Alicia-Ann Pauld, who has muscular dystrophy, to get to Concordia University’s campus in downtown Montreal, especially during the winter. “If I fall, I can very seriously injure myself and I can’t get back [up] on my own,” said Pauld. “I’ve been in situations in the past where there’s a snowstorm the day of an exam and I have to go outside and literally put my life in danger.” She recalled an incident last year, when she fell on the ice on the way to one of her exams. “I injured myself a lot and I had to wait for someone to pick me up — a stranger.”…

While the digitization process offers an extensive list of opportunities, it also presents a number of challenges for higher education institutions, a primary one of which is learner authentication in online education. More and more higher education establishments are making use of digital learning environments (DLE), and electronic assessment systems are now an increasingly important element in the digital age, both for academic institutions and for students, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)…
