Insights From Disabled Travelers
August 25, 2022 | Source: Ability Magazine
Efforts are underway to allow people with disabilities to remain in their own wheelchairs while traveling by air. Currently individuals using wheelchairs must transfer to a regular aircraft seat when flying, which can be challenging and dangerous. In 2021 alone, federal data shows that U.S. airlines mishandled more than 7,200 wheelchairs and scooters. But now the U.S. Department of Transportation is working toward issuing rules that would require airlines to accommodate travelers in their wheelchairs, which are often customized to meet their needs…

Speedo, Hard Rock class actions claim websites not accessible to visually impaired, blind users
August 24, 2022 | Source: Top Class Actions
Gap and Lane Bryant have failed to make their websites fully accessible and independently usable for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, a pair of new class action lawsuits separately allege. Plaintiff Bryan Velazquez, who is legally blind, claims in separate complaints against Gap and Lane Bryant that their websites are not compatible with screen-reading software used by himself and other visually impaired individuals to access the internet.
Velazquez argues that Gap and Lane Bryant are violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by allegedly not having websites which are “equally accessible to blind and visually impaired consumers.”…
4 Disability Advocates Talk About Their DC Restaurant Experiences
August 18, 2022 | Source: Washingtonian
DC’s vibrant restaurant scene is known for its diversity—but local disability advocates say it could do better when it comes to inclusivity. While the Americans with Disabilities Act requires restaurants to be “readily accessible” to people with disabilities, many of DC’s restaurants are housed in historic buildings that are exempt from it. That can make things difficult for the District’s 115,456 adults with disabilities—equal to 22 percent of the city’s population. Here’s what four disability advocates had to say about their DC dining experiences…
Push to improve accessibility in Rochester for everyone
August 18, 2022 | Source: Spectrum News
Rochester is considered an easy place to get around by most, but not all. Now one group is helping the city better understand how it can make it a place where everyone finds it easy to get where they’re going. After fighting in two wars overseas, Nicole Neighbors came home to the fight of her life at a relative’s house in Niagara Falls. “She was dealing with someone who was violent,” said Neighbors. “I was unaware of it. And the man entered into the home, and I watched him kill her and he attempted to kill me.”…
Disabled Catholics praise Pope’s example in publicly using a wheelchair
August 19, 2022 | Source: Herald Malaysia
Beck saw a photo of Pope Francis sitting in a wheelchair and holding a baby during his week-long trip to Canada in July, she felt the same sense of camaraderie she feels seeing another mum at her children’s elementary school using a wheelchair. Beck, who uses a rollator, a kind of walker with a seat, teaches that “all bodies are good bodies” in her fat liberation activism. “Something is good that fulfils its purpose, and I believe that the purpose of the human body is relationship with God and others,” she said…
This technology makes data accessible to blind and visually impaired people
August 19, 2022 | Source: NPR
When Mona Minkara was 7 years old, she was diagnosed with macular degeneration and cone-rod dystrophy. That’s a diagnosis that meant she would eventually lose her sight. One specialist told her mother it was not worth spending a penny on her education. Mom did not listen. Minkara went on to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry and is now a professor of bioengineering at Northeastern University in Boston. And this week, she and her colleagues announced a new way to make scientific data easier to interpret for the blind and visually impaired. Professor Mona Minkara joins me now…
Naturally Speaking: Eagle Scout project makes wetlands accessible
August 20, 2022 | Source: Huntingdon Daily News
Eagle Scout projects come in big and small “packages,” but all are tremendous gifts to our community. There are several excellent examples along the Bells Gap Trail. A new project of the larger variety is nearly completed at a wetlands about 20 miles northeast of Tyrone. Although it was the project of one scout, it involved help from his fellow scouts, friends, neighbors to the project and donations from local businesses. Wildlife lovers of all ages and mobility levels are getting a big boost from an Eagle Scout project at the Galen and Nancy Dreibelbis Birding Area, located off Miles Hollow Road northeast of Port Matilda…
6 Things 2022 Election Candidates Should Know About Disabled Voters
August 20, 2022 | Source: Forbes
Simple “disability awareness” isn’t enough for candidates who care about appealing to disabled voters. This is a sign of progress for the disability community, and a challenge for politicians. There are always a dozen novel theories about how candidates for office can appeal to untapped wells of voter support. Some have more merit than others. Some electoral strategies are culturally or ideologically appealing, but amount to little more than wishful thinking. Others are potentially effective, but morally questionable. But one constituency worth pursuing for both moral and politically practical reasons is voters with disabilities…
Congress ordered agencies to use tech that works for people with disabilities 24 years ago. Many still haven’t.

Ronza Othman, a lawyer with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Baltimore, hasn’t been able to order a sandwich without help in her office cafeteria for a decade. Before the deli replaced workers with a touch screen in 2012, she would walk up to the counter and ask for a roast beef and cheddar sandwich with cucumbers, not pickles. But Ronza, who is blind, can’t work the touch screen as it doesn’t take voice commands. “I’m an attorney. I have a master’s degree in government and nonprofit management. I’ve raised children,” she said. “But I can’t get a damn sandwich by myself in my agency.”…
Disability rights groups battle Lyft for wheelchair accessible vehicles — again
August 22, 2022 | Source: NBC
In 2018, Ansel Lurio found himself trapped in a snowstorm after leaving a dentist appointment in Westchester County, New York. Lurio usually rode home in his motorized wheelchair, but this time the snow made it impossible. He said the buses weren’t running and there were no paratransit vans around, so he turned to Lyft. “If you look for accessible vehicles in Westchester, it tells you none are available,” said Lurio, 37. Lurio, who has duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive disease that causes the muscles to weaken and atrophy over time, said he relies heavily on his motorized wheelchair to get around…

In a tweet posted on Aug. 18, Engel wrote: “Our beloved son Henry passed away. He had the softest blue eyes, an easy smile and a contagious giggle. We always surrounded him with love and he returned it, and so much more. ” Engel’s tweet included a link to a page on the Texas Children’s Hospital site, which explained Henry’s medical journey and how he was diagnosed with Rett syndrome…
Hillsborough bus stop accessibility remain work in progress, decades after the ADA
August 24, 2022 | Source: Tampa Bay Times
Old City Hall shone purple on the last Tuesday of July to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. But scattered across Tampa and surrounding Hillsborough County stand an untold number of bus stops that don’t meet standards set by the landmark legislation that affords people with disabilities the right to access all areas of public life, including public transportation. As of 2019, there were 327 bus stops in Hillsborough that did not meet the 1990 law’s minimum accessibility standards: a 5-by-8-foot firm surface connecting to the curb…
Making the Get-Together great for everyone: State Fair focused on addressing accessibility
August 24, 2022 | Source: MPR News
Joshua Straub has cerebral palsy and is a full time wheelchair user. He has been to the Minnesota State Fair a few times, but says he feels like the fairgrounds have aged and not always kept up with ADA regulations. Some spaces are more difficult than others to access for wheelchair users. The coliseum has narrow entrances, the grounds are crowded, the curb ramps are small and often easy to miss. Several years ago Straub tipped his wheelchair and broke his finger. While he says there are many positives, they tend to be outweighed by a few high impact barriers…
Pete Buttigieg — Building a Better and More Accessible America
August 25, 2022 | Source: Ability Magazine
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is addressing both the climate crisis and need for accessible transportation, both of which disproportionately effect people with disabilities. DOT is creating avenues for cleaner and more accessible transportation through legislative funding and providing grants for improvements and grants to fund innovative technologies. With 32 years since the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), barriers to accessible rail transportation remain widespread in the US. An estimated 900 rail stations that serve millions of passengers were built before 1990…

Besides the numerous safety checks of the stalls and attractions, the organisations are also checking items such as toys, gadgets, and electronics. Another concern is making sure that stalls are accessible to the disabled. Wheelchair-accessible taxi shortage leaves people stranded, and socially isolated
August 19, 2022 | Source: ABC- Australia
Janine Lyon’s day starts a week in advance. While most people have the privilege of simply grabbing the keys and racing out the door, the Ballarat woman spends a lot of time planning every single detail any time she wants to leave the house. “I find I miss out on things; I’ve waited up to two hours at some stages to get home.” Like the time she went shopping one evening. Ms Lyon had booked taxis well in advance but when it came time to leave the shopping centre, she was told by the taxi company they could not find a vehicle available…

When it comes to homecoming gifts, Brad Bartko has perhaps elevated his gestures more than ever. There’s another noble – and from where I sit and watch things unfold – most triumphantly, frankly to the younger generation of people with disabilities, who care about the next generation. There is an important act to let you know. Bartko: A baby born to a young woman of 16 years old, small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, stayed in the hospital for 24 hours and was hospitalized for 76 days. There were more – a minor cerebral hemorrhage and one underdeveloped lung…
How this partially sighted B.C. gamer learned to play Super Mario
August 21, 2022 | Source: CBC- Canada
Millions around the world play the Super Mario video games — but imagine playing them without being able to see them. That’s the experience of 21-year-old Jalen Berg, a partially sighted gamer from Langley, B.C. Berg grew up with cone-rod dystrophy, an inherited eye disorder that affects the retina’s light-sensitive cells and causes people to lose their vision over time. He is legally blind but can still see certain things. His particular type of condition is on the colour-blindness spectrum, he explained, making it hard for him to see things that are similarly coloured or shaded…

Calls for change as WA continues to evade new building accessibility standards
August 24, 2022 | Source: ABC- Australia
Retrofitting Andrew Fairbairn’s home so he could get around it in his wheelchair cost the NDIS $100,000 and took him more than three years. It’s a battle that will start to become less common around much of Australia, as changes to the National Construction Code take effect. New standards will require home builds to have things like at least one step-free entrance, wider doors and corridors, and reinforced walls around toilets and bathrooms so grab-rails can be installed if needed…
