Lawsuit: Maryland prisons discriminated against disabled inmates, threatened retaliation for filing grievances
December 10, 2019 | Source: Baltimore Sun
It’s been about two years since Florida and Disability Rights Florida, a statewide advocacy group, reached a settlement that was meant to improve conditions for inmates with disabilities. But the group says the state has failed to comply with the 2017 agreement by not providing interpreters for inmates who are deaf or hard of hearing, confiscating mobility devices from inmates who need them to get around and not providing white canes for inmates who are blind, among other issues…

December 6, 2019 | Source: WMTV
A project in a Janesville school has launched the school into the next round of a nationwide competition encouraging students and teachers to use STEM to solve problems. The Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired has passed through the first round of Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow competition, in which public school students and teachers in 6th through 12th grade are challenged to use Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to help their schools and communities…
Hiking Wheelchair Opens Up Outdoor Lifestyle To People With Serious Disabilities
December 6, 2019 | Source: NPR
Five people moved in tandem down a trail, connected by a wheelchair unlike any other. This hiking trail, popular with Bend, Ore., families, is a testing ground for inventor Geoff Babb. One miscalculation about how to navigate a tight squeeze of boulders, and he could topple over the edge toward an ice-cold river below. But that’s not what worried Babb, who hasn’t walked since a stroke 14 years ago. “I don’t feel scared on the trail. I trust these guys to figure it out,” Babb said, adding that he feels more vulnerable crossing a city street…
Feds examining whether Wrigley Field renovations comply with ADA
December 6, 2019 | Source: Chicago Sun Times & Chicago Tribune & Your Valley & Ballpark Digest & Curbed
Federal authorities have begun an investigation to determine whether the Chicago Cubs’ years-long renovation of Wrigley Field complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act, court records show. Though the Cubs’ attorneys say they “welcome” the investigation, they also say it will delay the installation of additional accessible seating ahead of the 2020 season. Lawyers for the Cubs disclosed the investigation in a letter filed Thursday with U.S. District Judge Jorge Alonso, who is presiding over a lawsuit brought by David Felimon Cerda, a Cubs fan with Duchenne muscular dystrophy who uses a wheelchair…
How Chicago can improve its transportation for people with disabilities: report
December 6, 2019 | Source: Curbed Ski
A successful transit system is more than just on-time trains, it also needs wheelchair-accessible stations and complete sidewalks near bus stops to serve every resident. A new report highlights how Chicago’s transportation system is failing people with disabilities—and what the city can do to improve. The study, Toward Universal Mobility, from Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) lays out issues with Chicago’s “uncoordinated patchwork” transit system and details 32 recommendations for the city and surrounding counties…
We Can Do Better On Winter Weather Accessibility
December 6, 2019 | Source: Forbes
“Our life comes to a total standstill in times like this — a total standstill.” “When it’s all snow, I can’t even tell if I’m in a yard or the middle of a street … You never know if you will slide into the street and get hit by a car.” “I pretty much avoid rolling anywhere in the winter … It is a weird kind of prison for three or four months out of the year.” These are quotes from people with disabilities, describing what it’s like trying to navigate winter weather in Minnesota, from a February 2019 article in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune…
Congressman, NTID, Center for Disability Rights push for airport accessibility for the deaf and hard-of-hearing
December 6, 2019 | Source: WHEC
A local politician met with local advocates for the deaf and hard-of-hearing to discuss the importance of accessibility in airports. Last month, U.S. Congressman Joe Morelle raised concern that rule-making on accessibility for all airline passengers was delayed again. On Friday, he spoke with News10NBC about the importance of ensuring accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing passengers. Morelle said he sent a letter to the Department of Transportation asking them to take action on accessibility standards such as captioning on the in-flight entertainment systems…
Illness, injury and aging will raise demand for homes with accessibility. Now, they’re not easy to find.
December 7, 2019 | Source: The Philadelphia Inquirer
Matthew Gill was 19 years old when he hit his heading diving into the Rock River in Wisconsin. Matthew, now 25, suffered a spinal-cord injury that put him in a wheelchair for life. The accident changed the trajectory of the Gill family in many ways, including their housing. Matthew’s childhood home — a five-bedroom, three-bath split level — wasn’t conducive to his new mobility. “I am in a wheelchair, full time … we got a chair lift put in,” Matthew said. “I would transfer to that and use that up the stairs, and someone would have to bring up the wheelchair.”…
The US needs to lead again on disability rights
December 7, 2019 | Source: The Hill
There are more than one billion disabled people worldwide. That’s about one in seven people — and these numbers are only growing. People acquire disabilities through natural disasters, conflict, military service, age, climate change and disease (including diseases that we, as Americans, rarely see). In 2010, I was appointed as the State Department’s first special adviser on international disability rights. This was the natural progression of American leadership: the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) — which will celebrate its 30th birthday next year…
‘Anybody can climb:’ Adaptive Climbing Group makes rock climbing accessible for all abilities
December 8, 2019 | Source: ABC & Yahoo (Video)
One group is taking climbing to new heights by building an inclusive community that make climbing accessible for all abilities. The Adaptive Climbing Group at Brooklyn Boulders started in New York in 2012 and has since expanded to three states, including a location on Chicago’s Near West Side. “The Adaptive Climbing Group is a community first and foremost,” volunteer coordinator Al Schiewe said. “It’s a community that gives climbing capabilities to people that normally wouldn’t think about climbing.”…
Eviction case highlights accessibility, repair issues at Nevin Plaza
December 9, 2019 | Source: Richmond Confidential
On March 10, 2019, Michael Lewis came home to a notice on his apartment door telling him to vacate the unit where he’d lived for three years at Richmond’s Nevin Plaza housing project. The notice followed 12 months during which Lewis hadn’t paid his rent due to what he and his lawyer charge were uninhabitable living conditions in an inaccessible upper floor unit, added to the expense of getting a new $2,400 wheelchair that he needs to get around…
New York State is still a top ‘judicial Hellhole,’ report finds
December 10, 2019 | Source: New York Post & Seyfarth Shaw
New York State is holding steady as the nation’s third worst “judicial hellhole,” according to a new watchdog report. The Big Apple’s rotten rank stems from serial plaintiffs and lawyers taking advantage of a lack of reform addressing litigation abuse — despite earning the same ranking last year, the report from the American Tort Reform Foundation said. Across the state, courts are clogged with lawsuits exploiting the Americans with Disabilities Act and capricious class-action lawsuits aimed at the food and beverage industries, ATRF claimed…
Retailers: Make your website accessible or leave money on the table
December 10, 2019 | Source: ZDNet
You want anyone to be able to buy from your retail website, right? News flash: You’re missing out on entire segments of your target market because of how your website is designed and coded — unless you’re one of the few brands (just 2.2% of websites) that get accessibility right. Fifteen percent of the world population has a disability, and people with disabilities have money to spend: Working adults with disabilities in the US alone have a combined after-tax disposable income of $490 billion. Does your company really want to ignore a segment with that much to spend?…
Older life isn’t a loneliness sentence, new study finds
December 10, 2019 | Source: ZME Science
Human communication dynamics have changed substantially in the past few decades. It wasn’t long ago that if you wanted to talk to someone, you needed to be physically next to them. But phones became commonplace in the 20th century, and nowadays, we always have smartphones on us, we talk through the internet, we communicate via social media, and interact in a number of ways that just didn’t exist before. The way we communicate isn’t the only thing that has changed, our social structure has changed as well…
Businesses struggle to comply with unclear ADA website requirements
December 11, 2019 | Source: Orange County Register
With a number of new landmark laws going into effect January 1, California’s businesses face heavier burdens than ever before. Businesses, both small and large, are struggling to comply with policies such as the California Consumer Privacy Act and Assembly Bill 5, the codification of the California Supreme Court’s Dynamex decision. Yet another issue looming large for business owners is a resurgence of shakedown lawsuits under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) lawsuits – this time over website violations…
Everything Restaurants Need to Know About ADA Compliance
December 11, 2019 | Source: QSR Magazine
The number of Americans living with disabilities is larger than many think. The Census Bureau reports that more than one in 10 of us—12.7 percent—have a disability that impacts major life activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts the number at one in four U.S. adults, or 61 million people. This demographic makes up a sizable group of existing and potential restaurant customers. “People with disabilities are sometimes your most loyal customers,” says Shawn Pike, vice president at User1st, which provides Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) website accessibility services. “There’s an opportunity there.”…
MPC’s Toward Universal Mobility report aims to make local transit accessible for all
December 11, 2019 | Source: Streets Blog Chicago
During the official release of the Toward Universal Mobility report last week at the Union League Club, transit officials and disability right activists argued that Chicago area transit providers have a long way to go to make public transportation accessible for everyone. And they said they are determined to make sure that the report’s recommendations will actually become reality. The study, which was put together by the Metropolitan Planning Council, highlighted several weaknesses in the way both local fixed-route bus networks and paratransit systems fall short…
For many, federal protections for those with disabilities are not enough
December 12, 2019 | Source: Minnesota Daily
Tate Hall, like many other buildings on the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus, is compliant with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. The bathrooms have accessibility stalls, there are multiple elevators and the building has two entrances for those with mobility challenges. Despite its compliance, it can seem hard, if not impossible, for some attending classes to navigate the building alone. The ADA is a federal law enacted in the 1990s to mitigate discrimination of people with disabilities…
Project’s goal: Accessible clothing
December 12, 2019 | Source: Atlanta Journal Constitution
When Jayden Niblett wakes up each morning, his mind goes to what he can wear to impress his friends. It often leads to annoyance. Jayden, 11, who has Down syndrome, struggles to find clothes that fit his particular body type and are accommodating of his motor deficits, an issue that people with physical disabilities face every day in a world where fashion is built on single-size body standards. “It’s really frustrating for him,” said Janet Littleton, Jayden’s grandmother. “It absolutely affects his mood and how his whole day is going to go.”…
Diminishing duplication in evaluating accessibility of education technology
December 12, 2019 | Source: Inside Higher Ed
When it comes to ensuring educational technology is accessible to students with disabilities, the buck stops with institutions, not vendors. This is a frustrating reality for many college accessibility staff, who feel vendors should shoulder more responsibility for the accessibility of their products. But it is institutions that are ultimately legally responsible for making sure that the learning materials they provide are accessible to all students. The Los Angeles Community College District, for example, was successfully sued by two blind students earlier this year for its use of inaccessible digital courseware…

December 12, 2019 | Source: Greater Greater Washington
Currently, there are about 280 wheelchair-accessible taxis in the District that make about 36,000 trips in total per month, but that’s not enough to meet the demand. A new pilot program by the District Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) aims to incentivize wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) drivers to make more trips, and increase the number of accessible taxis in circulation. “In order to build a stronger, more connected DC, we need to ensure accessible and equitable transportation options for all of our residents and visitors,” said DC Mayor Muriel Bowser in a press release…

When I’m Excluded From Accessible Spaces as a Person With Dwarfism
December 4, 2019 | Source: Yahoo Lifestyle- UK
A few weeks ago I attended my first concert. I went to see Cher live at the Manchester Arena. My brother, another avid Cher fan, joined me. This was reassuring, because as a woman with dwarfism, I don’t do well in crowds. I am knocked and shoved by people who tower over me. As an average size man, my brother was able to guide me through the crowds. It was a great night, obviously because it was a Cher concert, but it was also ruined by the four fans in front of us who refused to sit down…

Purple Tuesday Raises Awareness for Hidden Disabilities
December 5, 2019 | Source: Redbrick- UK
Think of a route you take to lectures or to work. Then think about how long that takes you. Do you have to climb any stairs or go through any heavy doors? Do you cross any roads that don’t have a crossing? Do you stop by your favourite coffee shop on the way? These things may seem unimportant. Afterall, it’s just the route you take every day, isn’t it? But for someone who is living with a disability, this isn’t just the route you take. Instead, it’s the obstacles you have to overcome…

Under current legislation, a disabled person is unable to make minor accessibility changes to shared areas unless all owners give their consent…

Making Culture in India Accessible to All
December 7, 2019 | Source: The Wire- India
The International Day for Persons with Disabilities – a day to reflect on how we might help the world’s billion-plus population of persons with disabilities build better lives – was observed globally on December 3. The rights and entitlements of persons with disabilities have been articulated in international frameworks such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Incheon Strategy, and the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Ensuring that persons with disabilities are actually able to enjoy their rights, however, often presents serious challenges…
National Disability Service calls for a rethink on NT Government’s tourism strategy
December 7, 2019 | Source: ABC News- Australia
The National Disability Service is hoping the NT Government will rethink its tourism plans, after its latest strategy failed to include any improvements to disability access. Before becoming a quadriplegic five years ago, Darwin man Brett Peebles hadn’t ever thought about accessibility in Australia. “You see the wheelchair spaces and you see all the bits and pieces and you think, ‘oh yeah, that’s nice people can get in there and do that’,” said Mr Peebles. “It’s not until you experience it and deal with it yourself, that you go, ‘oh well I need a little bit more than what is available’.”…

The barriers are lack of accessible teaching materials and inadequate skilled teachers. Even blind schools do not encourage students to pursue them in higher classes…
Campbell: Let’s make jobs more accessible for Canada’s disabled
December 10, 2019 | Source: Ottawa Citizen- Canada
The United Nations recently marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The theme this year is “The future is accessible.” It’s a future all of us in the disability sector envision — especially as it pertains to jobs for people who have a disability. An idealistic vision? I don’t think so. Here’s the thing, though: the future starts now. We need to do more now about employment accessibility. How? And what does accessibility mean, especially when it comes to employment?…
How to make museums more accessible for disabled people? Ask them
December 10, 2019 | Source: Art Newspaper- Europe
Museums can be hostile places for disabled visitors, with buildings that are hard to navigate by wheelchair and exhibits presented with few concessions to those with sensory or cognitive impairments. But a handful of European institutions have conducted access studies that promise to transform this dispiriting experience, drawing on expert advice from participants with diverse lived experiences of disability. Through Arches, a three-year European Union-funded research project, more than 200 disabled people have helped design digital technologies to guide visitors with different access needs around the collections of six participating museums…

Israel’s contribution to UN accessibility is a façade for its violations
December 11, 2019 | Source: The Union Journal- Israel
Israel marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by devoting three paediatric wheelchairs into the UN Human Rights Council. The goal, in accordance with Israel’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, was”to create the UN truly reachable, so that individuals with physical disabilities could actively participate and affect world problems discussed in Geneva.” The occasional visits by kids to the UN aren’t powerful in the grand scheme of their organisation’s exploitation of individual rights…

‘They haven’t done their job’: Braille on Parliament Hill sign is flat, unusable
December 12, 2019 | Source: CTV News- Canada
The new, shiny West Block building welcomed members of Parliament last week, but there was one glaring oversight – a sign, pointing to the bathrooms, has a photo of braille on it – instead of the real thing. That means people who are blind will not be able to use the tactile reading and writing system to understand where to find that particular bathroom. The rest of the signs in the building are equipped with the full, three-dimensional braille – for example, the signs outside stairwells, caucus rooms, emergency exits and other bathrooms…
