Accessibility in the News — 3/3/2023.
A new report released by the Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed that the federal government is not complying with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, which requires federal agencies to ensure that their websites are accessible to individuals with disabilities. The report shows that one in 10 public-facing websites at major federal departments and agencies are not fully accessible, and three in five internal websites are not accessible. Some departments and agencies did not report conducting any accessibility testing of internal websites, and key government agencies did not have adequate resources or staff trained to implement policies, processes, and procedures. Despite this, the DOJ has ramped up its enforcement efforts to compel private businesses to comply with accessibility standards, and private plaintiffs have been filing a record number of website accessibility lawsuits. The report highlights the need for reasonable website accessibility standards that recognize the real challenges that businesses face in making and keeping their websites accessible.

Voters With Disabilities Still Face Hurdles in Chicago Elections
February 27, 2023 | Source: Governing
Last November was supposed to be the first time Chicago polling places were fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Instead, as voters cast their ballots in city elections through Tuesday, just over a third of the polling places — often schools, park district facilities, libraries or churches — are fully accessible by ADA standards. Some say the city has made promising improvements since the U.S. Department of Justice first flagged accessibility problems at polling places in Chicago and in other big cities in 2016…

March 2, 2023 | Source: OPB
Oregon school districts would no longer be able to limit educational time for students with disabilities without their parent’s consent under a measure that passed the state Senate on Thursday. The right to access a public education with a licensed instructor for all Oregon students is a right they have under state and federal laws. But some students with disabilities are being quietly removed from school or only offered abbreviated days or online instruction.

The Covid Inquiry: what’s worse than being disabled in the pandemic? Let’s add in some patina of age and colour. The Covid Inquiry has heard the voices of disabled people for the first time this week. Legal representatives have presented evidence from Disabled People’s Organisations including Disability Rights UK, Disability Action Northern Ireland, Inclusion Scotland and Disability Wales as part of the preliminary hearings for part of Module Two. Campus must be made more accessible to students with disabilities
March 2, 2023 | Source: The Silhouette- Canada
Most university students have experienced the discomfort of some of the older lecture halls on campus; choosing between either your notebook or laptop, as only one can fit on the tiny stowaway table, is every lecture’s struggle. Now imagine this struggle for a person who already faces challenges on a day-to-day basis. The disappointment they feel when they finally reach the lecture hall after a long wait for the elevator, just to realize there is nowhere they can comfortably adjust their wheelchair without drawing the attention of the entire lecture hall…

A Presbyterian from California helps Ukrainians living with disabilities in wartime and beyond
March 2, 2023 | Source: Presbyterian Outlook- Ukraine
Our last full day in Kyiv begins with a startle — shortly after breakfast the air raid sirens sound, interrupting a sunny and cold morning. It’s been a few weeks since the warnings have been activated in Ukraine’s capital, signaling the possibility of incoming rockets. The hotel staff is calm and the city’s traffic outside my window flows normally. One indication of the alert’s seriousness is seeing a few hundred reservists – Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Force – muster on the lawn of a building next to the hotel…
