Nike Agrees For Calif. Workers To Have Transparent Masks
January 27, 2021 | Source: Law360
Nike has agreed to outfit its California workers with see-through masks as part of a proposed settlement to end class allegations that the shoe company’s pandemic-era policy mandating masks prevents deaf and hard-of-hearing customers from reading employees’ lips. The unopposed motion filed Wednesday in California federal court outlines a deal where Nike will provide transparent masks to all California employees if they need to assist hearing-impaired customers, as well as clean pens and paper at its stores for such transactions…
Is the Beauty Industry Glossing Over Disability in Advertising?
January 27, 2021 | Source: Allure
Growing up a biracial Asian girl with an X in my name who had Cerebral Palsy and walked with two adapted ski poles for support, I never expected to see myself represented. I identified strongly with other women, but I was too niche and, for the most part, I liked that. My family cultivated the best in me, so I grew up believing my disability was an asset. My mom, an art director for Estée Lauder and Avon, always said, “There’s always going to be someone smarter than you, prettier than you, taller than you, and that’s OK, just be you.”…

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Idahoans navigate pandemic
January 31, 2021 | Source: East Idaho News
After spending five days at a mental health hospital in October, Quinn West left feeling as though they hadn’t gained much from their stay. They spent most of their time in their room, finding group therapy pointless because, as a Deaf person, they couldn’t fully participate in conversations. They communicated with hospital staff primarily through writing and lipreading. They repeatedly asked for an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, but in-person interpretation wasn’t an option because of COVID-19 restrictions…

January 29, 2021 | Source: Houston Chronicle
The Texas Education Agency agreed last summer to pay up to $15 million for two years of access to a digital platform for dyslexic students that will not be ready for widespread use until February or March, according to documents and emails obtained by the Houston Chronicle. Documents show TEA officials used emergency procurement measures to tap Baltimore-based AmplioSpeech to provide access to its virtual learning platform to students with dyslexia and speech-language disorders, as well as trained speech pathologists…
Sundance 2021 Knows Accessibility Is a Problem and Set Out to Change It
January 30, 2021 | Source: IndieWire
If you’re a person with a disability looking to attend a film festival, you’ve probably run into the question of which events are suited to you. As a film critic, festivals are par for the course and I’ve been routinely told one thing: Don’t go to Sundance. The long-running festival held in Park City, Utah, is often looked at as one of the more inaccessible festivals for the disabled, and it’s understandable. “The festival happens to be in the mountains which leads to inherent issues with accessibility,” actor and Easterseals’ Disability Film Challenge creator Nic Novicki told IndieWire…

White House Doubles Down On Accessibility
February 2, 2021 | Source: Disability Scoop
The day President Joe Biden was sworn into office, those watching the inauguration saw fire Capt. Andrea Hall, the child of a deaf parent, recite the Pledge of Allegiance – spoken in English and signed. “Let’s just say that’s the first time I’ve ever cried at the pledge,” said Sara Novic, a deaf writer and college instructor based in Philadelphia. “Beyond access, that was representation, and it meant a lot to see her on the big stage as part of the ceremony.”…
Disability Advocates Call For More Accessible Right-To-Speak System At Arizona Legislature
February 1, 2021 | Source: KJZZ
The legislative session is in full swing despite the pandemic. And there are more than 100 bills that could impact the disability community. But there are concerns that not enough is being done to give people with disabilities a chance to have their voices heard. Jason Snead is with the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council. He recently contributed to an op-ed about the Right-to-Speak (RTS) system. “It’s what individuals use to voice their opinions on bills,” he explained…
Greenwich schools: Study of accessibility is on its way
February 1, 2021 | Source: The Wilton Bulletin
School and town officials agree: When it comes to the Americans with Disabilities Act, there are compliance issues in the Greenwich Public Schools. But how to remedy those issues, and on what timeline, has been the subject of debate. A federal complaint filed in the fall with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights alleged discrimination on the basis of physical disability at Old Greenwich School, which is rife with ADA issues. The complaint brought the issue of ADA compliance into focus…

Nike unveiled its newest innovation this week — a hands-free sneaker. The new designs use no lace, hands-free technology to provide a sense of independence for those living with disabilities. “The only thing stopping me from going away and living on my own was not being able to tie my shoes,” Matthew Walzer told 7NEWS. Walzer, a life-long sneaker fan who was born with cerebral palsy is the inspiration behind the “FlyEase” collection. “No other company has done what Nike has done. No other footwear brand has stepped up and said hey we’re going to make an accessible shoe,” he said…
Face masks an anxiety-provoking obstacle for many with hearing loss, survey finds
February 3, 2021 | Source: McKnight’s Long Term Care News
Fully 95% of people with hearing loss in the United States say that the masks and face coverings worn during the pandemic are creating communication barriers, and more than half say they are experiencing anxiety and isolation as a result. That’s according to the Hearing Loss Association of America and hearing implant maker Cochlear, which surveyed almost 1,400 people, some with recent hearing loss and others with long-term hearing loss. Most respondents were aged between 55 and 90 years, and based on survey answers, a proportion (not measured) reside in assisted living or independent living communities…
Savannabiliy task force addressing accessibility issues throughout Savannah
February 3, 2021 | Source: WSAV-TV & Savannah Morning News
It is difficult to make any city — much less a historical one like Savannah — accessible to people with disabilities. The mayor is making that priority number one for a new task force called Savannability. Savannah Mayor Van Johnson says the purpose of the initiative is “to listen, and we’re going to do what we can to improve the experience of people with different abilities in Savannah.” Paul Rockwell, a Savannah resident who requires a wheelchair to get around, says he hopes to change dangerous infrastructure. He is one of more than 20 members of the task force…

Quemuel “Q” Arroyo, 31, told The Post he came to a career of advocacy for people with disabilities after a 2007 mountain bike accident left him confined to a wheelchair. “My perspective was completely turned on its head,” Arroyo said of the spinal cord injury, for which he spent 10 months recovering at the hospital…
New tactile book helps blind children better grasp the world
February 3, 2021 | Source: ZME Science
Blind children are at an obvious disadvantage from their sighted counterparts, the latter of whom have access to more learning opportunities thanks to their extra sense. Aiming to narrow this gap, researchers have devised books with tactile illustrations that make it easier for children to follow along by exploring 3D mini-scenarios with two fingers. This approach is particularly useful for studying history, the researchers said. The advent of tactile writing systems, such as Braille, for the visually impaired was a game-changer…
Resort Companies Must Pay Paraplegic Worker Over Job Site Access
February 4, 2021 | Source: Bloomberg Law
A wheelchair-using call center worker for a hotel and resort booker in Maine is entitled to the $500,000 he was awarded after a jury found that his employer failed to respond to his request for push-button, automatic entrance doors to his workplace, the First Circuit ruled. The evidence showed that Ocean Properties Ltd. and AmeriPort LLC never followed up with Ryan Burnett on three separate occasions regarding his accommodation request, the court said. Burnett, who is paraplegic as the result of a dirt bike accident years ago, first sought a change to the heavy wooden doors at the main entrance…

Special Olympics Israel to transform accessible healthcare
January 31, 2021 | Source: ISRAEL21c
Yona Rabinowitz, 20, has won medals in Israeli Special Olympics swimming competitions since she was seven. Like any athlete, her physical condition is paramount. This problem can seriously impact the quality of healthcare for athletes like Rabinowitz, who has Down syndrome…

January 31, 2021 | Source: VOCM- Canada
Newfoundland and Labrador is in the midst of a winter election, and the timing of the campaign is raising concerns about accessibility. Debbie Ryan with the Canadian National Institute of the Blind says there are a lot of people in the province who are blind or living with low vision and she wants to make sure they’re able to get out and vote. Ryan has been in contact with Elections NL to discuss accessibility. She says special ballots are available for those who for whatever reason can’t vote in person while resources will also be available for in-person voting…
Education inequalities linked to increased cognitive aging in women
February 1, 2021 | Source: Medical Xpress- UK
Improvements in access to education for girls over the last century in the UK are likely to have reduced differences in cognitive aging between men and women, potentially reducing sex disparities in dementia risk, finds a new large cohort study led by UCL. Though previous research indicates women are at higher risk of dementia than men, the study, published today in The Lancet Public Health, found that historical inequalities in levels of education were partially responsible for differences in cognitive aging between men and women, potentially contributing to sex disparities in dementia risk…

The city’s transportation department is pleased with the results from the first year of the pilot project in 2020, leading staff to suggest an expanded e-scooter program in 2021. Travel company says it’s not responsible for Peabody man’s botched vacation
February 3, 2021 | Source: The Salem News
A judge is considering whether an online travel agency should be liable for a botched vacation trip for a Peabody man who uses a wheelchair. Thomas Muxie was forced to return home early from his trip to Cancun in 2017 because the hotel was not handicapped-accessible, despite assurances from the CheapCaribbean travel agency that it could accommodate wheelchairs, according to a lawsuit filed in Peabody District Court. The company is not disputing those facts…
