The agency says that one elevator will bring users from the street-level to the station’s mezzanine, one will connect users from the mezzanine to the uptown F and M platform, and one will connect users from the mezzanine to the all-directions L platform…

The U.S. Department of Transportation published a proposed rule on Aug. 22 to incorporate accessibility guidelines for pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way, including sidewalks, crosswalks, pedestrian traffic signals, transit stops and on-street parking. The guidelines that DOT looks to incorporate were issued last year by the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board. Those guidelines, which became effective Sept. 7, 2023, fall under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which applies to state and local government facilities among others, and the Architectural Barriers Act, which applies to many federal facilities…

With DAS Rule Change, Disney Rejects Disability Inclusion Efforts
August 23, 2024 | Source: WDWINFO
When I read the news in May (followed by worsening ongoing coverage) about Disney’s DAS (Disability Access System) policy change, my heart dropped. I slowly realized that Disney had more than merely adjusted DAS to prevent cheating of the system, as that would have involved truly updating their disability qualification process (such as medical documentation, which is what they implemented at Universal and other theme parks). Instead, they decided it was more cost-effective to exclude most disabled people from the theme parks by denying an important accessibility accommodation…

August 26, 2024 | Source: WVXU
Planning a Labor Day vacation, day trip, or simple excursion takes a lot more work when you need to think about more than just throwing some sunscreen in a bag and jumping in the car. The U.S. has become a lot more accessible in the more than 30 years since the Americans with Disabilities Act went into effect, but there are ever-changing challenges. “There’s some apps that are rolling out that are starting to gain traction in terms of accessibility,” says Patricia Dawson with the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities…

What does a truly accessible new home look like?
August 28, 2024 | Source: Inside Housing- UK
By 2050, a quarter of Britons will be over 65. We all know about the pressures an ageing population places on the NHS, but what is being overlooked is that many people’s homes will no longer be fit for purpose. Their reduction in physical dexterity and the beginnings of issues like cognitive impairment may quickly make houses difficult to live in safely and independently. The way we design and construct houses needs to be radically reinvented and placed at the heart of the new government’s pledge to reform planning rules and build 1.5 million new homes…

Why sport must be (re)imagined in ways that make it more accessible for all disabled athletes
August 29, 2024 | Source: The Conversation- Canada
The increased media coverage of the Paralympic Games makes Paralympic sport seem “inclusive.” But, the continued reliance on segregated sport and narrowly defined classification categories suggests ableism remains.
