Accessibility in the News — 10/20/2023.
The Department of Justice has successfully negotiated a $475,000 settlement with Maryland-based developer Humphrey-Stavrou Associates Inc. and related entities, addressing alleged violations of the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The claims center on the failure to provide necessary accessible features for individuals with disabilities, particularly those using wheelchairs, at six multifamily housing complexes in Maryland. As part of the agreement, the defendants will undertake extensive retrofits to remove accessibility barriers at three properties they still own and three they sold to third parties. This settlement aims to enhance accessibility and equal housing opportunities for individuals with disabilities, ensuring that approximately 1,300 residential units in Maryland become more accessible.

In the early 2000s, Indian-American researcher and author CK Prahalad’s book, The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid sparked a global conversation about the role of businesses in addressing poverty. It has since influenced the strategies of many successful companies. For the uninitiated: Prahalad argued that the world’s poorest people constituted the “bottom of the pyramid” (BoP) and presented a massive opportunity for the world’s wealthiest companies…
What adults can learn from kids about inclusivity | Do children hold the key to improved accessibility?
October 13, 2023 | Source: SMA News Today
Growing up, I loved the library’s summer reading program. I’ve always been a bookworm, so logging hours of reading and being rewarded for my hobby was a highly satisfying endeavor. My favorite prizes were, of course, new books. Last year, I was thrilled to learn that this program from my childhood had been expanded to include adults, and a winter edition had also been added. Both programs have an app where I can easily track my progress and enter the tickets I win into various raffles…

The team started their work last fall and generated 4,110 images from text prompts input to Midjourney…

No lights and music at rides and games at NC State Fair for AccessABILITY Day
October 15, 2023 | Source: ABC11
A unique atmosphere at the NC State Fair on Sunday. While there were big crowds throughout the day, for part of the fair, no lights or music were on any rides and games to make the fair more accessible. It’s called AccessAbility.
The first time, Hannah McCalip brought her son 8-year-old Remi McCalip, she says she only brought him due to AccessABILITY Day. “Absolutely, we wouldn’t have come out otherwise, definitely less sensory overload just with the lights being down, music being down and then crowds can get really overwhelming because it’s that sort of chaotic energy where children with autism don’t know how to react to it,” she said…

Watching TV While Blind
October 19, 2023 | Source: Consumer Reports
In 1985, there was not a 7-year-old on the planet with a better working knowledge of the goings on in Genoa City, the fictional setting of “The Young and the Restless,” than me. The daytime drama was my grandmother’s favorite. It was my job to watch with her and provide visual commentary, because my grandmother was blind. When the words weren’t enough, I helped her set the scene in her mind by answering her questions. “Were his eyes opened when they kissed?” she’d want to know. “Can anyone in the courtroom tell she’s lying?” We played this game of TV Show and Tell whenever the set was on…

Life in a metro: Accessible yet constrained
October 15, 2023 | Source: Deccan Herald- India
Every day, I park my two-wheeler at the Baiyappanahalli metro station, take a train to MG Road, and then walk the last 50 metres to my office. This morning I did the same thing, only to realise when I reached the station that I’d forgotten to pick up my metro card at the last minute. This is a good time to let you know that I don’t use a smartphone. I decided to give it up a few months ago in return for control over my mental and physical health, expenses, and time…
