Accessibility in the News — 9/15/2023.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced a proposed rule, titled “Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability in Programs or Activities Receiving Federal Financial Assistance,” to update and strengthen provisions under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This rule aims to ensure that individuals with disabilities have equitable access to healthcare and social services, addressing issues such as biased medical treatment decisions, web accessibility, accessible medical equipment, and the most integrated service settings.

Sisu, the beauty clinic chain owned by entrepreneur Pat Phelan, has settled a claim in the US that alleged its online services were inaccessible to people with visual impairments. James Watson, a legally blind man, sued Sisu’s US business in July alleging that the company’s website was inaccessible to people with visual impairments. Watson, who has filed similar lawsuits against other businesses, claims the design of Sisu’s digital services was discriminatory and in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)…
Lincoln Park Zoo creates free pilot program for people living with dementia

The Lincoln Park Zoo has created a free pilot program for people living with dementia. The monthly event joins a roster of accessibility programs aimed at making the zoo inclusive for all guests. The zoo said its new pilot program fosters a safe and welcoming space for guests to connect with wildlife and build community through socialization. NFL Accommodates but May Not Understand ADA Stadium Accessibility, Survey Says

NFL guests with disabilities or those who bring disabled people to games have mixed views about stadium accommodations. A majority of those impacted have a positive view about considerations, though nearly half don’t feel like the league understands their needs. Gaming Today wanted to know how well NFL stadiums were doing at making those accommodations. Making data more accessible by turning it into sound

When you go to a museum or visit a science center, it’s not uncommon for graphs, charts and other visual data displays to be included in the exhibit. But those displays can be inaccessible for blind and low-vision visitors. EEOC Sues Walmart For Disability Discrimination

Walmart, Inc. and Walmart Stores Arkansas, LLC, a multinational retailer, violated federal law when it subjected a nationwide class of employees with disabilities to unlawful testing, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it filed today. According to the EEOC’s lawsuit, in 2015, Walmart collaborated with a third-party entity to create the “Pathways Training Program,” including a test called the “Pathways Graduation Assessment.”…
Closed captioning requirements in Toledo show importance of accessibility

The city of Toledo enforces a closed captioning ordinance that requires all public buildings in the city limits to have closed captioning enabled on TVs. The ordinance has been in effect since December 2022 and means that any Toledo restaurants, bars, educational institutions, hospitals, healthcare facilities, entertainment venues and public transportation facilities should have the accessibility feature on televisions in their premises. Supreme Court E-Committee Conducts Regional Digital Accessibility Training For Visually Challenged Court Staff
