Accessibility in the News — 4/14/2023.
The US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois has found the city of Chicago liable for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and Rehabilitation Act by failing to provide accessible pedestrian signals at its signalized intersections. Accessible pedestrian signals (APS) provide safe-crossing information in a non-visual format, such as through audible tones, speech messages and vibrating surfaces. The city was sued by the American Council of the Blind on behalf of three individuals in 2019. The advocacy group claimed that less than half of 1% of Chicago’s signalized intersections have APS and that blind and low vision pedestrians were put in danger of crossing against the light, in the path of cars, every time they crossed a street without APS.

A Manhattan federal judge on Friday approved a settlement to a class action lawsuit that locks the MTA into equipping 95% of subway and Staten Island Railway stations with elevators or ramps — with a deadline three decades away. The approval by U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos caps one part of a long-running push by advocates for people with disabilities to improve access to a transit system where merely a quarter of the nearly 500 stations comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990…
Chasing rainbows- Apparently, the very idea of colorblindness is hard to visualize. Take a shot at looking through my eyes.
April 7, 2023 | Source: The Verge
Living with colorblindness feels like you’re constantly being pranked by the world in subtle, irritating ways. The other day, I was booking a flight on Kayak, trying to figure out which dates are the cheapest by looking at their low fare calendar. See any issues? Oh, sorry — that’s what it looks like to me. You probably see it more like this. I opened up Chrome Dev Tools, changed the cheap fare colors to something I could actually see, and eventually booked my flight. A few weeks later, I’m off to the airport. Conveniently, the parking structure added colored lights to help find empty parking spots…
Blind man says he was stuck in Atlanta hotel elevator without braille due to digital control panel
April 7, 2023 | Source: ABC7 Chicago
A visually impaired man is calling for change after he claims he was stuck in an Atlanta hotel elevator without braille. Mario Bonds was in town late last month for work and was staying at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Midtown Atlanta. He said he didn’t have a problem when he checked in because someone helped him to his room on the 17th floor. However, he said the hotel’s elevator became a “safety hazard” once he tried using it on his own, WANF reported. “I don’t appreciate what I had to experience,” Bonds said. “I got scared. I felt vulnerable.”…

How container gardening can increase accessibility for gardeners with mobility concerns
April 8, 2023 | Source: The News Courier
Container gardening is an increasingly popular form of creative gardening, especially for those dwelling in rentals or homeowners with limited land. “Planting a container garden is much like creating a floral arrangement. However, live plants are enjoyed for a whole season. Almost any plant grows in a container when proper conditions are provided and adds a versatile splash of color and art wherever desired,” Kerry Smith with the Auburn Extension said in “Container Gardening.”…

April 9, 2023 | Source: Greenwich Time
More than 30 years after the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in 1990, Greenwich Public Schools buildings are still not ADA compliant. However, district officials are taking steps to address accessibility concerns, starting with examining how accessible the school buildings are. Accessibility issues at the schools abound, and have even garnered the attention of federal authorities. Two years ago, the federal Office of Civil Rights filed a complaint against the district because of its failure to comply with ADA standards at Old Greenwich School…
The dream of wiping out polio might need a rethink
April 10, 2023 | Source: NPR
The global campaign to eradicate polio has been incredibly successful except in one key way: It hasn’t actually eradicated polio. Some prominent scientists who’ve spent their entire careers battling polio are now saying it’s time to rethink the multi-billion dollar fight against the disease. When the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched in 1988, the goal was to extinguish polio by the year 2000. At the time, polio was still paralyzing hundreds of thousands of people a year, and some cases were even fatal…
How Can Fashion Week Be More Accessible?
April 10, 2023 | Source: Fashionista
For me, attending New York Fashion Week is a lifelong dream realized: being immersed in stunning artistry, sitting in the same rooms as A-Listers and seeing icons at every turn… It’s an extremely privileged experience, and it’s one I’m so grateful to be a part of. But as luxurious and thrilling as the runways and presentations can be, there’s one thing I couldn’t help but notice throughout the week: all the stairs. As someone who deals with chronic pain, climbing up several flights of stairs at a time can be, quite frankly, debilitating…
Republican Colorado Lawmaker Rips State’s Disabilities Bill In Bizarre Speech
April 11, 2023 | Source: HUFFPOST
A Colorado State Representative apparently decided the best way to protest a bill designed to help disabled people is to attack their intelligence. On Tuesday, Rep. Richard Holtorf (R) spoke out against HB23-1032, a bill that clarifies the remedies a person with a disability is entitled to under current Colorado law regarding discrimination in public spaces. Holtorf felt so strongly the bill was a bad idea for Colorado residents that he protested it by … using “Spanish” law?…

The platform she’s built on TikTok and across social media since then is dedicated to strength and positivity, as well as advocacy for those within the disability community. Ableist attitudes: Take our quiz to understand disability bias
April 12, 2023 | Source: Washington Post
Can you recognize when you’re being ableist? Even well-meaning people can exhibit unconscious bias against people with disabilities. Ableism is rooted in the assumption that non-disabled people are the ideal. The Washington Post consulted 25 disabled activists and scholars, including representatives from several national disability organizations, to create a quiz that can help someone learn more about ableist thinking. Read each example and think about how you would typically react to the situation. Then read how people in the disability community feel about the same scenarios…

Almost 500 days before the Paralympic Games, Patrice Tripoteau, deputy general manager of APF France handicap, warns of the current situation in terms of accessibility for people with disabilities. There is a first obstacle which is the barrier that they put themselves: very often, they do not even have the idea of doing a physical activity because they think that they are not capable of it. If they take the plunge, they are then faced with multiple obstacles: there must be infrastructure to welcome them, but also transport to get there and sometimes human assistance to help them put on sports clothes…

Henry Goldstein, 22, has high support needs. He has difficulty with expressive language and uses only one to three words at a time to express himself. He also has epilepsy. He understands most spoken language, but requires a lot of visual cues in order to understand a set of instructions. He needs to eat something high in protein every few hours, and his epilepsy sometimes causes him to freeze while walking, making group activities a potential challenge. Yet, Goldstein was able to travel to Israel with a group of similarly-challenged young adults on a Birthright Israel trip this past February, accompanied by a one-on-one companion…

April 12, 2023 | Source: Jordan Times- Jordan
In this era of information, accessibility should be a priority in website design to allow for more inclusive opportunities for persons with disabilities, says 33-year-old Ahmad Masri, a computer programmer with a disability. “From the womb of suffering, hope is born,” is Masri’s motto, he told The Jordan Times. Masri was born with a complete visual imparity and has had a passion for programming since the eighth grade. As a result, the full potential of the Internet remains largely inaccessible for people with disabilities…

Jess Casey: People with disabilities still face challenges getting into third level
April 13, 2023 | Source: Irish Examiner- Ireland
Major gaps remain when it comes to getting students with additional care needs to third level, despite advances in support, access, and outreach in recent years. The issue was raised at the Fórsa education division annual conference by special needs assistants (SNAs), who work closely in classrooms with students and who witness both their successes and the barriers they face…
