July 10, 2022 Source: Daily Mail
She recently described how the ‘brutal’ reaction of fans to the cancellation of her Las Vegas concerts had left her feeling like a ‘shell of a person’, but Adele has now drawn praise for having sign language experts at her gigs. Two signers appeared on big screens last weekend as they took turns to translate the star’s 17-song setlist during her concerts at London’s Hyde Park as part of the British Summertime festival. Sources close to Adele, 34, said it was important to the singer that her deaf fans were able to enjoy her performances…

How the ride-sharing revolution failed passengers with disabilities
July 11, 2022 Source: The Verge
It’s the year 2022, and Henry Claypool still has trouble getting ride-sharing companies to send a wheelchair-accessible car to his home. Smartphone apps like Uber and Lyft were supposed to democratize transportation for marginalized groups — but for wheelchair users like Claypool, this was always a false promise. “I live in Arlington, Virginia, still inside the square that makes up DC just across the river,” said Claypool, who is the former director of the Office on Disability in the US Department of Health and Human Services. “And I’ve never been able to hail a wheelchair-accessible vehicle to my location.”…

My son is 15. He is also an autistic boy with Down syndrome. This is not the technological future we were promised when he was born. We thought by now we’d have devices, apps, and pharmaceuticals that would help him learn and communicate more easily, while also keeping him safer in a hostile world…

That all changed when the store started using an automated accessibility tool, often called an accessibility overlay, that is created and sold by the company accessiBe. Suddenly, the site became too difficult for Mr. Perdue to navigate. The accessiBe overlay introduced code that was supposed to fix any original coding errors and add more accessible features…

Accessibility challenges persist for students with dyslexia
July 14, 2022 Source: K-12 Dive
Before introducing new tools and resources into the classroom, educators should ensure they’re accessible for students with all learning abilities, including dyslexia. Early screening can help identify struggling learners, including students with dyslexia, so they get the support needed. But if new platforms or services aren’t fully researched before being introduced to classrooms, they may need to be retrofitted to learners’ needs. Asking students what they think they need is a solid first step, said Lindsay Kubatzky, director of policy and advocacy for the National Center for Learning Disabilities…

Accessibility with dignity, inclusivity at heart of new Wascana Pool
July 8, 2022 Source: Regina Leader Post- Canada
Accessibility is one thing, but accessibility with dignity is another, says Eric de Waal, a facilities project consultant with the City of Regina. “That’s kind of the nuance around accessibility right?” de Waal said Friday as he took media on a tour of the new Wascana Pool currently under construction. He used the new zero-depth entry leisure pool as an example. “If you had a pool tank that only had a lift and someone wants to get in that pool, their only option is to get in a harness and be lifted,” de Waal said…
