Disability Advocates Demand Public Apology From CDC Director After ‘Hurtful’ Comments
January 14, 2022 | Source: Huffington Post
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky apologized to disability advocates after calling it “encouraging” that most vaccinated individuals who have died from COVID-19 “were unwell to begin with,” but they say the CDC needs to do more. Walensky drew ire from many with disabilities after an appearance earlier this month on ABC’s “Good Morning America” where she discussed a new study looking at the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines…

11th Circuit’s ADA Reversal Curbed Florida Litigation in 2021, but Digital Accessibility Suits Are ‘Here to Stay’
January 14, 2022 | Source: Law.com
It’s been a busy 12 months for Americans With Disabilities litigators across the country, who filed about 15% more digital accessibility lawsuits than they did in 2020—equating to more than 10 lawsuits per day. And yet, Florida hosted substantially less litigation after the U.S. Court of Appeal for the Eleventh Circuit overturned a landmark ruling in Gil v. Winn-Dixie. In it, the appellate panel found that websites generally aren’t covered by the ADA, Title III of which governs accessibility of public spaces and prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability…
How You Can Help Make Birding More Welcoming and Inclusive
January 14, 2022 | Source: Audubon
“Birding is for everybody!” Right? It’s easy to think that everybody feels welcome and included in the birding community and the outdoors just because we say things like that. But sometimes it’s not enough to assume folks know they’re welcome; we must be intentional about it, too. There are concrete actions we can take—as individual birders, members of birding groups, and organizations—to ensure that everybody feels that they belong in the birding community…
The Visual Delay That Explains “Change Blindness”
January 14, 2022 | Source: Technology Networks
Like our social media feeds, our brains are constantly uploading rich, visual stimuli. But instead of seeing the latest image in real time, we actually see earlier versions because our brain’s refresh time is about 15 seconds, according to new research from the University of California, Berkeley. The findings, published Jan. 12 in the journal Science Advances, add to a growing body of research about the mechanism behind the “continuity field,” a function of perception in which our brain merges what we see on a constant basis to give us a sense of visual stability…
How a Lititz-based voice actor is helping make movies and TV more accessible and inclusive
January 16, 2022 | Source: Lancaster Online
Some of the most iconic movies scenes have no dialogue. Think about the standoff in the classic Western film “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” the crop duster plane scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “North by Northwest,” or the penultimate scene in “The Silence of the Lambs.” Tense movie scenes often rely on the audience’s ability to see what’s happening on screen, but for people who are blind or have visual impairments, these scenes don’t really work. Luckily there’s a feature being added to movies and TV shows to help audience members with vision issues more fully enjoy their entertainment — and it’s becoming more mainstream…
California’s disability community doesn’t need more tech. We need less discrimination
January 17, 2022 | Source: Sacramento Bee
I’m frequently asked about the latest disability technology being covered in the media. People expect me, as a blind person, to share their excitement about such innovations. Most find my frustration and lack of enthusiasm perplexing. They don’t understand that in the excitement that accompanies supposed technological solutions for the disability community, the true problem — ableism — is often overlooked. Researchers at Stanford, where I’m a student, recently developed a $400 self-navigating “smart cane” intended to help the blind community, for example…
Inspired by lack of representation, deaf teen publishes her own American Sign Language book
January 17, 2022 | Source: Fox 2
“My name is Khyiana Tate,” she said in sign language. Khyiana Tate is an 18-year-old senior in high school, about to get her driver’s license. She’s pretty excited about that. She’s also excited about this – her new book – “Signing with Khy.” “Black and brown individuals aren’t always represented in books,” she said. “Like I’ve seen other books and I wanted to see myself in a book – books that I like – that I like to read.” But she wasn’t seeing herself – a person of color – in books about American sign language – so she made her own, with family and friends signing the alphabet. Even little brother MJ has some letters…
Lesson of the Day: ‘At-Home Coronavirus Tests Are Inaccessible to Blind People’
January 18, 2022 | Source: The New York Times
At-home coronavirus tests have become a way for people to quickly know their Covid status before socializing or going to school or work. However, these tests rely on conducting complex steps and interpreting visual cues that often make them inaccessible to people who have limited vision or are blind. In this lesson, you will learn about some low- and high-tech developments that could make at-home Covid testing more accessible. Then, you will reflect on other ways to make testing for the coronavirus more accessible for all people…
California freezes hundreds of thousands of suspicious disability insurance claims
January 18, 2022 | Source: The Hill & Fox 2
California’s labor department froze 345,000 disability insurance claims the state suspects are connected to fraudulent actors looking to exploit the system. The state’s Employment Development Department (EDD) said in a news release on Jan. 13 that it suspected “organized criminal elements” of filing false claims using stolen credentials from doctors or other medical professionals. The department froze 27,000 suspicious medical provider registrants and 345,000 claims associated with those providers or other suspicious activity…
Lanette Pinkard, CODA, and Deaf Ally Believes in Equality in Customer Service
January 18, 2022 | Source: The American Reporter
We live in a world today where most people blessed with all five senses have little to no exposure to Deafness, Deaf individuals, or the Deaf community unless it is through TV. Unfortunately, the lack of exposure to Deafness breeds a lack of education about Deaf culture. A lack of education leads to language accessibility gaps for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. What would happen if most of the population were Deaf? How would hearing-abled individuals view communication equality or the lack thereof if the shoes were reversed?…
For Deaf Vermonters in Recovery, Accessible Support Services Are Often Out of Reach
January 19, 2022 | Source: Seven Days
When Patricia Lambert started her recovery in 2004, she went to Alcoholics Anonymous every day. The goal was 90 days of meetings, or “90 in 90” — a common practice for AA newcomers. It took a year and three 90 in 90s before Lambert felt comfortable calling herself sober. “It saved my life,” the Wallingford resident said, as relayed by American Sign Language interpreter Elizabeth Fox. “If not for them, I probably would still be drinking to death. I’d be in trouble with the law — like, who knows?”…
Uber calls demand for wheelchair-accessible rides unreasonable
January 19, 2022 | Source: Courthouse News Service
Making Uber provide wheelchair-accessible rides in two gulf cities would cost too much and set a dangerous precedent, an Uber lawyer argued on the first day of a bench trial over federal disability access laws. “If the court grants plaintiffs the relief they’re seeking, there’s no reason the same relief won’t be requested in any city USA,” Uber attorney Ethel Johnson said. “As a consequence, the potential burden on Uber and other companies is magnified far greater than what the court will hear at this trial.”…
The Language of Disability in the Workplace
January 19, 2022 | Source: ATD
According to the World Health Organization, over one billion people live with some form of disability, which corresponds to about 15 percent of the world’s population. Yet many of us struggle with how to talk about disability in the workplace, unsure what words or phrases to use and which ones to avoid. Part of our hesitation stems from differing direction on the most respectful way to refer to disability. While language specifics vary across cultures, opportunities exist for everyone to develop greater awareness about disabilities in the workplace…
ADP Settlement Offers Framework for Future Digital-Accessibility Agreements
January 20, 2022 | Source: The Wall Street Journal
When a lawsuit alleged that human-resources software company Automatic Data Processing Inc. had failed to make its products accessible for people who are blind or have low vision, the case joined a growing body of litigation over accessibility in the digital world. But its recent settlement, and the path that the opposing parties took to get there, could do more for digital accessibility than many of the cases that came before it, some advocates say. The sides used so-called structured negotiations—a strategy in which parties agree to cooperate with one another, usually without a lawsuit on file—that resulted in a settlement without further litigation in court…
La Crosse to undergo massive reevaluation of accessibility around city spaces
January 20, 2022 | Source: Lacrosse Tribune
The city of La Crosse will do a major reevaluation of the accessibility of all city spaces, a staff member reported to the Committee for Citizens with Disabilities on Thursday. This initiative is part of the city’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) transition plan, a federally required update that La Crosse has been slowly working on for several years. But staff said work on the project has largely been “stagnant” until now. The city has recently hired the firm Tindale Oliver to take inventory of the current accessibility conditions around the city…
How one young actor is using American Sign Language in animation
January 20, 2022 | Source: Salon
It only 12 years old, Shaylee Mansfield is already breaking new ground with the animated series “Madagascar: A Little Wild.” Despite her youth, it still took her a while to get here. In an interview with Salon, she said she started acting “by accident,” but according to her mother, Mansfield was “born with a camera.” At a young age, she began making videos with her family for their YouTube channel ASL Nook, which teaches American Sign Language (ASL) and aspects of Deaf culture. Mansfield was born deaf to deaf parents. Her younger sister is hearing…

Select committee on accessibility not very accessible, advocates say
January 14, 2022 | Source: CBC- Canada
A call for submissions to the legislature’s select committee on accessibility in New Brunswick wasn’t very friendly to people with disabilities, according to advocates. The committee asked for submissions about accessibility, but disabilities advocate Abby Bourque-Coyle said time was limited to get the submissions in, and the committee required them to be in writing, making it difficult for some people with disabilities. Accepting written briefs only — and in either French or English — left many people out, she said…
Adults have ADHD. We should have accessible care, too
January 15, 2022 | Source: The Globe and Mail- Canada
I spent most of my life feeling like I was barely getting by. No matter how much effort I put in, I was always falling behind, everything just beyond my control. I couldn’t keep up with school readings. I handed in essays and articles with spelling mistakes, having written them the day they were due. I felt friendships slip away and scrambled to reel them in, answering texts or calling people back weeks late. Even everyday chores spiralled and accumulated, a few dishes becoming a sinkful. I struggled to keep up with what everyone else seemed to find easy, my friends and peers breezing through the same small tasks that overwhelmed me…

Some people with mild colour deficiencies can see colours normally in good light but have difficulty in dim light while others are not able to distinguish certain colours in any light. In the most severe cases, person sees everything in shades of grey,” said Dr Shalinder Sabherwal, Head of Community Ophthalmology and Associate Medical Director, Dr Shroff Charity Eye Hospital…
How increased screen time is changing kid’s eye shape and potentially causing early blindness
January 17, 2022 | Source: Times of India
The outbreak of the pandemic caused massive disruptions worldwide. Schools were shut and kids of all ages started to spend more time indoors in front of screens especially as many schools shifted to virtual based learning. With the rise in online video-based learning, ophthalmologists in India have reported a drastic rise in myopia in children in the past year. Some doctors report as much as a 25 per cent rise in onset and a 100 per cent progression in children with myopia…
Help make British Sign Language an official language
January 17, 2022 | Source: The Big Issue- UK
Every day, deaf people fight to be heard, to be listened to and to be understood. As both of my parents were profoundly deaf, British Sign Language was my first language. Growing up I saw first-hand the difficulties deaf people face and continue to face, but I also saw how incredible British Sign Language (BSL) is as a language and how amazing the deaf community is! I often joke that the deaf community abducted me at birth and that deaf culture shaped me into the person I am today…

How to support deaf people in your life
January 18, 2022 | Source: Reader’s Digest- UK
Imagine waiting for years, to have the representation you craved growing up. And that time finally happened in 2021, as Rose Alying- Ellis became the first deaf contestant and winner of Strictly Come Dancing.
Many deaf people are pigeonholed to what society deems the norm and Rose’s Strictly success has challenged the conversation around deafness. As someone with a moderate hearing loss, I am often met with frustration by hearing people for simply not hearing them the first or third time but just imagine the difficulties deaf and hard of hearing people deal with daily, from listening fatigue, lack of understanding, mental health issues and more…
Calls for universal accessibility design for Auckland public playgrounds
January 19, 2022 | Source: RNZ- New Zealand
Eight-year-old Ella is cheeky and independent. She was born at just 25 weeks and suffered a brain bleed which left her with cerebral palsy. Ella relies on a wheelchair to get around and occasionally uses a walking frame. Like most children, Ella loves going to the park. That is despite the fact that most in her home city do not cater to her needs. Of the 887 public playgrounds in Auckland, just 128 are considered accessible for children with disabilities…
Simple eye test measuring the retina’s age reveals how long you’ll live
January 19, 2022 | Source: Study Finds- Australia
A simple eye test may provide doctors with a clue into how long you have left to live. An international team has discovered a link between the biological age of a person’s retinas and their risk of death. The membrane at the back of the eye contains light sensitive cells that begin deteriorating during middle age. A study of almost 47,000 adults found that people whose retinas were “older” than their actual age were more likely to die over the next decade. The discovery could lead to a routine screening tool for a host of life-threatening illnesses – including Alzheimer’s disease…
How Niagara-on-the-Lake can take charge in Ontario’s quest for full accessibility by 2025
January 19, 2022 | Source: Niagara This Week- Canada
The clock is ticking for the province of Ontario, a clock critics say the government hopes to hit the snooze button on. Ontario is coming up on its 20-year anniversary since passing the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) in 2005, which stipulates Ontario must become fully accessible for people with disabilities by 2025. With three years left until then, disability advocates say the provincial government isn’t moving fast enough to make it happen…

He uses a wheelchair and communicates using New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), but says “the only barriers in my way is society which has decided to put barriers up, out of ignorance”…

Bionic eye implant enables blind UK woman to detect visual signals
January 20, 2022 | Source: The Guardian- UK
An 88-year-old woman has told of her joy at becoming the first patient in the UK to benefit from a groundbreaking bionic eye implant that enabled her to detect signals for the first time since going blind. The woman from Dagenham suffers from geographic atrophy. The condition is the most common form of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which affects millions of people worldwide and can cause loss of sight. The breakthrough, which experts say offers hope of restoration of sight to people suffering vision loss because of dry AMD, involves a revolutionary chip that was implanted behind her blind left eye…
