April 15, 2022 | Source: The Washington Post
One morning in June 2000, Tara Burglund was driving through a thunderstorm on her way to work just north of Sioux City, Iowa. She could see the dark clouds looming overhead and feel the 74 mph winds trying to roll her car as she pressed on the brakes. But she couldn’t hear the cracks of thunder or the urgency of the severe weather alerts. Burglund is deaf. While she followed her instincts to pull over into a parking lot, she didn’t know what was going on…

April 15, 2022 | Source: Yahoo
Days before his birthday in August 2019, an employee at a Kentucky-based laboratory asked his office manager to not arrange a celebration for his birthday. It wasn’t the fear of getting older, but rather an anxiety disorder that can spur “panic attacks in stressful situations,” according to court documents. The employee, who was hired in October 2018 by Gravity Diagnostics, did not want a celebration because “being the center of attention” can trigger his disorder, the documents state…

April 16, 2022 | Source: TravelPulse
Several studies have indicated that the accessible travel market is poised to grow dramatically over the next few years. These analyses have been conducted in Europe and the Americas, and the results are all telling the same story: growth in the billions of dollars. Since over 600 million people worldwide require a level of physical accessibility assistance (due to a permanent, temporary or situational disability), it is no wonder that so many hoteliers, tour operators, OTA’s and destinations have included accessible travel as a vital part of their strategic plans…

When Scarlet Watters, who is deaf, started making TikToks in March 2020, she was “terrified” at the prospect of creating content on a video-sharing platform that had not yet introduced closed captions. At first, Watters posted videos of herself dancing, “since that’s what everyone else was doing.” But with lip-syncing videos being one of the most popular genres at the time, she decided to dip her toe into making “ASL covers” — using American Sign Language (ASL) to sign along to song lyrics while lip-syncing…

April 18, 2022 | Source: TechCrunch
The U.S. General Services Administration, which procures and investigates tech for things like government websites and online services, is making a two-pronged push for accessibility in its recently released Equity Action Plan. Websites must be made accessible beyond the bare minimum, it said, and bias in facial recognition systems means the feds will be avoiding it wherever possible. The Action Plan is the result of a bit of introspection at the GSA, which “conducted equity assessments and identified a set of actions for three high-impact focus areas,” one of which is “federal technology design & delivery.”…

April 19, 2022 | Source: Design Taxi
When advertisers promote their products, they seem remarkably adept at targeting the right audience—except when accessibility comes into play. It’s often expected that the abled persons in the circles of people with disabilities would see those commercials and buy those products for their friends, but the intended users are far more capable than others credit them to be. Mastercard walks the talk with a thoughtful spot that encapsulates what its accessibly-designed, differentiated cards are all about…

The state health department has submitted language that will make applying for Michigan disability assistance more accessible. The change would let interviews conducted during the application process take place over the phone instead of just in-person. Detroit Disability Power director Dessa Cosma said people who have medical or transportation issues or are concerned about COVID-19 need that flexibility. “It’s important that we have options so that we can be safe and so that we can get our needs met without having to put ourselves in harm’s way, Cosma said…

Schools are struggling to hire special education teachers. Hawaii may have found a fix
April 21, 2022 | Source: NPR
A few years after Heather Carll started teaching special education in Hawaii public schools, she called it quits. She needed a break from the meetings, paperwork and legal responsibilities that make teaching students with disabilities one of the toughest jobs in education. “I felt like, ‘Let me get away from [Individualized Education Programs] and see what it’s like to teach without that responsibility, without that extra added stress to my job,’ ” she says…
Disabled and low-income residents raise Chapel Hill parking accessibility concerns
April 19, 2022 | Source: The Daily Tar Heel
For disabled veteran Darice Johnson, finding parking in downtown Chapel Hill can often be a challenge due to congestion on the small streets. Although accessible parking is available, heavy foot and car traffic typically crowd the downtown area. This causes Johnson to try and avoid downtown altogether. “It’s very stressful trying to drive and park in those areas — that whole 10 block radius,” Johnson said. And while Chapel Hill residents know the struggle of finding parking downtown, the issue is even greater for those limited by a disability or cost…

April 20, 2022 | Source: Allure
As an above-elbow amputee who loves beauty, I’ve spent a lot of time studying products in order to find ones that are great in terms of both quality and ease of use with one hand. There’s nothing worse than struggling to open your lip gloss and finally dropping the wand on your white pants. But in my ventures to find accessible products for myself, one thing constantly bothered me: Some things that were great for me sometimes weren’t accessible to those living with other needs, such as people who are visually impaired…

I was raised by a pretty health-conscious family, going all the way back to my grandmother. That was always a part of my life. What made me fully understand the power of the right wellness routine, though, was an experience my mom went through with her autoimmune disease. When I was a teenager, my mom switched over to seeing a more holistically minded physician and had an incredible improvement in her symptoms. Because of that, I decided I wanted to be a doctor and help people through this lens of holistic health…
Circuit Courts Split on Standing to Sue in ADA Title III Website Accessibility Claims
April 20, 2022 | Source: Jackson Lewis
On standing to sue under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), two U.S. Circuit Courts have arrived at opposite conclusions where the plaintiffs did not allege any concrete injury and said they had no intention of visiting the hotels whose websites were the subject of their accessibility lawsuits. The courts based their decisions on the same U.S. Supreme Court case law and nearly identical facts. After the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Spokeo, Inc. v. Robins, 578 U.S. 330, 340 (2016), courts have decided a number of cases on the issue of standing vis à vis “concrete harm,” which is harm that is “real, and not abstract.”…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
