My son’s smile means everything. Lucas is 14, nonverbal and full of joy. He doesn’t use words to express his happiness. It’s written all over his face. His smile is part of his language, and when I see it, I know that he and I are doing something right. We’ve learned to communicate in our own way. Gestures. Silent routines. Sometimes, it’s just instinct. Like a friend across the room during a boring business meeting, I can tell what he’s thinking simply by looking in his direction….

It also raises awareness for those who want to learn more about the disease. One Madison epilepsy leader talked with Fox 47 on Thursday about what it’s like to look at the glass half full when his diagnosis flipped his life on its head…

April 19, 2025 | Source: The Berkshire Eagle

What President Trump’s Department of Education Closure Could Mean for Student Broadband Access
April 19, 2025 | Source: CNET
There’s a stark disconnect between our era of internet connectivity and a looming sense of detachment, separation and seclusion for some students in K-12 schools. On March 20, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to close the US Department of Education and return education oversight to state and local communities. A signed executive order will not lead to an immediate shutdown unless Congress approves. However, with this executive order in motion, it’s only a matter of time before it sets the stage for a potential homework gap worse than we experienced during the pandemic…

He says the conditions at Hamilton Station – with escalators that have been out of service since September 2021 and July 2024 – are unacceptable. “I use a cane sometimes,” Reiter said. “My grandson, who’s in a wheelchair, it would be very difficult to get up the flight of stairs if the elevators weren’t working.”…
The State of Accessible Travel
April 21, 2025 | Source: Travel Weekly
Last December, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced the Safe and Dignified Assistance Standard, a new rule that requires airlines to provide training to airline employees and contractors who provide assistance to travellers in wheelchairs, ensuring they are not injured while being assisted and that their wheelchair or other assistive device is returned without delay or damage. The rule was slated to go into effect on Jan. 16. Flouting the mandate would have resulted in an automatic violation of the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA)…
Special committee would give disabled veterans a voice on accessibility challenges at VA facilities
April 21, 2025 | Source: Stars and Stripes
Check-in counters for appointments at Department of Veterans Affairs medical buildings often are too high and out of reach for people in wheelchairs. Inadequate curbside parking for vans with mechanical lifts makes it difficult for veterans in wheelchairs to enter some VA clinics and hospitals. Exam tables many times cannot be adjusted to handle the transfer of paralyzed patients. That is the message from veterans advocacy groups urging lawmakers to adopt legislation for reviewing disability accommodations at the VA and make recommendations for improvements…

Despite recent claims to the contrary, Mayor Cam Guthrie believes local accessibility advocates aren’t being ignored by city staff or council when they raise concerns. It’s just that their input isn’t the sole consideration when deciding city issues. “Council is the elected final decision body, and we have to weigh a lot of factors into our role before we make a final vote on something, and we appreciate all of those factors,” Guthrie said. “I think that we have a good advisory committee process and that we value all of them.”…
