Surge in remote working due to COVID fuels record employment for the disabled
December 15, 2022 | Source: Los Angeles Times
After generations of being overlooked and sidelined in the job market, Americans with disabilities are enjoying an unprecedented employment boom — thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Widespread acceptance of remote working and an overall labor shortage have opened up historic opportunities for some of the nation’s most skilled and underutilized workers. “I’m proud to be able to go out and earn a living now, especially teleworking, and do it as a blind man,” said Bobby Pellechia, 39, a data analyst in Central Texas who has had three remote jobs since the pandemic began, each time moving up in position and pay…
I’m a Blind Scientist and Inventor. More Disabled Kids Should Have the Opportunities I Had
December 16, 2022 | Source: Time
As a little kid, I was fascinated by the inner workings of every device in my family’s home. I would spend hours disassembling and reassembling radios, toasters, and other household appliances, trying to figure out how they worked. Some sighted adults marveled at this, but to me, a blind kid exploring the world, it felt perfectly natural. Blindness is a hands-on process. The model kits for steam engines and rockets I received on birthdays didn’t come with braille instructions…
Accessibility in Chicago: a local shares favorite spots for blind and visually impaired visitors
December 16, 2022 | Source: Choose Chicago
I grew up in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst. When my oldest sister moved to Chicago, she took it upon herself to expose her baby sister to the Chicago architecture and art scene: the Old Town Art Fair, the lakefront, the Chicago Cultural Center, The Art Institute of Chicago, and beyond. I knew then that I’d live in Chicago someday. What I didn’t know is that I’d be blind by the time I made that move. In 1985, I was diagnosed with a rare eye disease called retinopathy. Efforts to save my eyesight failed. I’ve been totally blind ever since…
How public radio stations can serve deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences
December 16, 2022 | Source: Current.org
Two public radio stations looking to improve the accessibility of their broadcasts for the deaf and hard of hearing have found new ways to provide live captioning of their programming. WAMU in Washington, D.C., is testing an automated speech-to-text technology developed by Enco, while KQED in San Francisco is promoting Google Chrome’s Live Caption, available since March 2021. Enco’s technology, enCaption, is a hard-wired system that generates captions from a feed of WAMU’s live broadcasts…
Aiming for inclusion in space, AstroAccess conducts weightless test flight in Houston with disabled crew members
December 16, 2022 | Source: Houston Public Media and Space
Renee Horton aspired to be an astronaut while growing up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a few hundred miles away from NASA’s headquarters in Houston. A hearing impairment has so far kept that childhood dream from becoming reality, but Horton has nonetheless pursued her goal and become involved in the field of space exploration. She earned bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in scientific disciplines and now works for NASA on its electric powertrain flight demonstrator project…
How to Keep Your Sidewalk Clear and Accessible for Disabled People
December 16, 2022 | Source: Q105.7
Something many of us can agree on is how difficult it is to climb over an unshoveled sidewalk in the winter time. However, something most of us don’t have to worry about is how to get through it in a wheelchair, or with mobility issues, or with a walking cane, or with a guide dog, etc. The point being, even though it’s something we might not consciously think about, we should always try to keep our sidewalks clear and accessible for everyone, especially individuals with disabilities who might have extra difficulty making the trek through the snow…
A Call for Greater Accessibility for Iowans with Disabilities
December 17, 2022 | Source: KMA Land
Iowans with disabilities said the state could be doing more to make public places more accessible and inclusive. In the new legislative session, the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council also wants lawmakers to make more money available to address dramatic staffing shortages. For the 12.5% of Iowans living with a disability, lack of accessibility is an ongoing issue. Brooke Lovelace, executive director of the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council, said the state can help increase access to affordable, reliable and convenient transportation so people can be more mobile in communities where they live and work…
Unemployment for blind people is staggeringly high. NewView Oklahoma works to change that
December 17, 2022 | Source: The Oklahoman
After Hannah Kinsey graduated from college, it took her five years to land a job. That wasn’t for lack of trying. Kinsey has been blind all her life, and she knew the daunting unemployment statistics for people who are blind or live with vision loss. One of the biggest hurdles she faced was just getting through the online applications for job postings. Many were impossible to use with her screen reader. “You can’t even get in the door, because I can’t fill out your application,” she said…
The School That Calls the Police on Students Every Other Day
December 17, 2022 | Source: ProPublica
On the last street before leaving Jacksonville, there’s a dark brick one-story building that the locals know as the school for “bad” kids. It’s actually a tiny public school for children with disabilities. It sits across the street from farmland and is 2 miles from the Illinois city’s police department, which makes for a short trip when the school calls 911. Administrators at the Garrison School call the police to report student misbehavior every other school day, on average…
‘It’s hard on my body’ | Push to get accessible van for 72-year-old grandma caring for disabled granddaughter
December 19, 2022 | Source: 11Alive
It’s a 30-minute process to get Moriyah McGuire in and out of the car. Her grandmother Joycelyn does it by herself every time they go to the doctor’s office and when she drops the 9-year-old off at school. Their routine is new for both of them after Moriyah was profoundly disabled in a car crash that killed her mom a year ago this week. It’s a routine, they hope, they won’t do by themselves for long – now that her teachers are stepping in to help. Moriyah just started at New Hope Elementary before Thanksgiving break but in those short weeks, she made a big impression and is inspiring a big movement…

December 20, 2022 | Source: Miami New Times
Rhonel Cinous, a podcaster and former radio host, has always been a techie. His interest in adaptive and voice-controlled technology arose after he experienced a severe spinal cord injury in a snorkeling accident in 2016 during his first visit to Haiti, his family’s home country. Following his recovery, the Miami-based Cinous never imagined he would contribute to a NASA space mission. But this month, he found himself at the Johnson Space Center in Houston as part of a virtual team testing out Callisto, a communication technology project for the Artemis I mission’s Orion spacecraft…
Disabilities lawsuit plaintiffs hope their case makes buildings more inclusive in Michigan
December 20, 2022 | Source: WDET
Disability activists are suing the State of Michigan and other local governments for violating building requirements, saying in a federal complaint that they do not have “simple access” to courtrooms and offices throughout the state. The lawsuit focuses on the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in downtown Detroit, arguing that the building lacks “disability-accessible, barrier-free” amenities. “Until recently, the disability community hasn’t been centered in discussions about serving people with disabilities,” Ashley Jacobson, an attorney specializing in disability services, tells WDET…

Revolutionizing the Workplace: Why Long COVID and the Increase of Disabled Workers Require a New Approach
December 21, 2022 | Source: American Progress
Burnout, quiet quitting, and labor shortages have all been repeated in news headlines in the past few years. But underneath these clickbait perspectives on the labor market is something that should be much more concerning: Americans are in the thick of a mass disabling event—one of the largest since the AID5 and polio epidemics—due to post-COVID-19 symptoms creating a condition known as long COVID. In the face of an increasing casualty count and so-called labor shortages, it is essential that employers reevaluate their workplaces to create more accommodative workplaces…

Traveling is tough for anyone, especially around the holidays. Yet, for people in wheelchairs or walking around with canes, it’s even more of a challenge. For this reason, AUS added three mobility assistive areas…

December 16, 2022 | Source: The Peninsula- Qatar and Gulf Times
Before every kick-off at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, two fans in the accessibility seats have been invited to meet their heroes and be a part of the pre-match ceremony. It is a small gesture – but one which means an incredible amount for those lucky enough to experience it. Ten-year-old Aiden Bell was chosen to line up with England ahead of their quarter-final match against France at Al Bayt Stadium – and for his dad, George, seeing his son next to Three Lions captain Harry Kane was a mind-blowing moment…
Diary of a wheelchair traveller: 7 accessible spaces in India
December 18, 2022 | Source: Money Control- India
Given that I’m a person with a disability, travelling is a little too paradoxical because I can’t go to the adjacent room in my house but want to roll in the city in the adjacent state! But given the connoisseur of hope that I am, I have travelled to some exciting places in the country which gave me not only memorable memories but also learnings, experiences, and lessons. As a woman with a disability, travel is nothing short of a roller-coaster of ebbs and flows, barriers and accessibility, of joy and sigh. But for me, grabbing a glimpse of a beautiful sunset or sway as the car drives through the meandering ghats, always comes first!…
Accessibility card scheme connects businesses with thousands of ‘forgotten’ customers
December 19, 2022 | Source: Stuff- New Zealand
It’s not about being politically correct – the people behind an accessibility scheme says businesses are missing out on the patronage of tens of thousands of people. Hāpai access card founder Loudon Keir says in Canterbury alone there are over 90,000 people with accessibility needs. Among them are people who are reluctant to go to cafes or entertainment venues with their friends and whānau for fear of being turned away or receiving poor service, he said.
Through the scheme – which celebrated two years in December – people with accessibility needs are linked to businesses which will accommodate them…
Calgary app developers want to make the city more accessible for people with disabilities
December 19, 2022 | Source: CBC- Canada
When Nabeel Ramji goes anywhere, he says he usually spends a day planning exactly how he’ll interact with the space he’s visiting. Ramji has cerebral palsy and uses a power wheelchair. Knowing the best place to get dropped off, if there are accessible bathrooms available and whether there’s an elevator nearby are incredibly important. “It causes a lot of anxiety on my part,” he said in an interview with the Calgary Eyeopener. It’s a feeling he’s hoping to ease by co-founding a new app called Pedesting…
