Students with physical disabilities can’t fully access most NYC schools-
August 23, 2023 | Source: Chalkbeat NY and NY1 and NY Daily News and City and State NY and FOX 5 & amNewYork
Fewer than one in three New York City public schools are fully accessible to students with physical disabilities, according to a report released Wednesday by Advocates for Children that calls on the city to ramp up funding for building upgrades. With the city expected to release its initial five-year capital plan for schools in November, the group is pushing for $1.25 billion to more quickly address major gaps in building accessibility. That funding, which would run from 2025 through 2029, would allow roughly half of the city’s schools to be fully accessible according to the report…

The definition of clinical trial diversity must include disabled people-
August 17, 2023 | Source: STAT
There are people in your life who influence and shape how you see the world. For me, one of these people is Terry Moakley, a warm and welcoming family friend, a veteran of the Vietnam War, and a fervent advocate for people with disabilities. After he became a quadriplegic as a result of an injury, he began a decades-long career dedicated to improving disability access. Terry was a champion for the often-overlooked disability community. Over the years, he helped set the standards for public transportation in New York City, contributing to the codification of accessible design…
For deaf children in Texas foster care, limited accessibility compounds trauma-
August 18, 2023 | Source: The Texas Tribune
In early 2019, a small group of foster parents clustered in the governor’s office, hoping months of working with the state would improve things for children like theirs: deaf or hard of hearing and traumatized by a system that struggled to care for them. In prior meetings held between these foster parents, the governor’s office and state agencies, leaders from Texas’ Department of Family and Protective Services waffled on their methods of tracking deaf children in foster care and the number currently in the system…
Deaf community feeling excluded at Renaissance Festival after decades of free accessibility-
August 18, 2023 | Source: FOX 9
The Minnesota Renaissance Festival is about to kick off its seven-weekend run in Shakopee. But members of the deaf community feel like the festival is excluding them. For 30-plus years, volunteers carried the load of making the festival accessible for the deaf community. But when they told the festival’s ownership the interpreters should be getting paid — and not just in turkey legs — they got nothing but silence as a response. In the suburban Shakopee field where castles rise out of the dirt, Leslie Yount found a joy she wanted to share…

August 18, 2023 | Source: CleanTechnica and The Messenger
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) Commissioner David Do this week announced the newly proposed rules for “Green Rides,” which requires the transition of New York City’s rideshare fleet to either zero-emission vehicles or wheelchair accessible vehicles by 2030. This initiative lays crucial groundwork in creating a cleaner and more accessible transportation system for New York City. The proposed rules will also make New York City the first large city in the world to have a rideshare fleet that is entirely either zero-emissions or wheelchair accessible…
Using stem cells, doctors restored vision to people with devastating eye injuries-
August 18, 2023 | Source: NBC
It was the Fourth of July in 2020 when Nick Kharufeh’s life changed. Just 23 at the time, he was at a family party when an errant firework struck his left eye. It wasn’t painful, but he couldn’t see out of it. It was so dark outside that his dad couldn’t tell how bad the damage was, so Kharufeh, of Rancho Cucamonga, California, headed inside to ask his mother to take a look. She fainted. After he was rushed to the hospital, Kharufeh, now 26, found out he hadn’t completely lost his eye, as everyone feared — but doctors told him that they might have to remove it and that there wasn’t much they could do…
Local museums, art installations push for accessibility for disabled guests-
August 21, 2023 | Source: Santa Fe New Mexican
Nina Moulton has a few favorite exhibits at the Santa Fe Children’s Museum. The 8-year-old loves the bubble table, where metal wands sit ready to create enormous soapy shapes. And she loves the Discovery Market, a child-sized facsimile of a store where small groceries become props in playing pretend. It’s a space where Nina, who has Down syndrome, has been welcomed and included, said her mother, Nicole Moulton. Nina even spent two weeks at a Santa Fe Children’s Museum summer camp this year, with one-on-one aides to provide her extra support…

Invisible Disabilities: A Challenge For Restaurant Accessibility-
August 23, 2023 | Source: LEO Weekly
Think about accessibility for disabled people in restaurants and other businesses, and you’ll probably visualize that familiar blue-and-white stick figure in a wheelchair. That’s not too surprising. The Americans With Disabilities Act, popularly known as the ADA, passed in 1990, is a civil-rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life. That means all people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else, says the ADA National Network…

August 24, 2023 | Source: Top Class Actions
Plaintiff Kevin Yan Luis, who is legally blind, claims Bombas’ website contains access barriers to screen-reading software used by individuals who are blind or visually impaired to use the internet. Yan Luis argues the alleged access barriers on the Bombas website deny individuals who are blind or visually impaired with equal access to goods and services provided to the company’s non-disabled customers, in an alleged violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)…

August 24, 2023 | Source: KRCC
Imagine hiking while blind. Without sight, trails get a lot trickier, and for some, the outdoors are simply inaccessible. A new option at Bear Creek Park in El Paso County is making one trail just a little more usable. The Songbird Trail already existed at the park. It consists of wooden planks that help keep the trail clear and easily traversable and occasional signs describe the local flora and fauna. Now, with a few quick updates, the trail has been adapted for a wider audience.

People with disabilities face barriers trying to book accessible hotel rooms in Halifax-
August 19, 2023 | Source: CBC- Canada
People with disabilities are raising concerns over the lack of accessibility in Halifax hotels, and an apparent policy that can bump them out of an accessible room if someone books a longer stay. These problems became clear to Elaine Murray and her husband Gordon, who live in the Clayton Park neighbourhood, after they tried to book an accessible room in the city while their roof was being repaired this spring. Gordon has a rare neurological disorder that affects his mobility and uses a walker…

Despite touting accessibility, some Montrealers say new REM isn’t adapted to their needs-
August 21, 2023 | Source: CBC- Canada and Global News
Julien Gascon-Samson moved to Nun’s Island in part because he could use the new light-rail train, known as the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), to get to work in downtown Montreal. Gascon-Samson, who uses a motorized scooter, was stoked to hear that the REM branded itself as fully accessible, but was quickly disillusioned. He says it is “officially impossible” to use the REM daily as the elevators often break down and there are few motorized doors in many stations. Most stations only have one elevator, leaving no alternative if it stops working…

Dis Life: ‘Spurs Disabled access makes fans feel like Beyonce’-
August 23, 2023 | Source: The Mirror- UK
I know, I know, I write about wall-to-wall bad news about Disabled people all the time. It’s impossible to run into a Disabled person without a random horror story being thrown up and at you. At the moment, I’m chasing anyone with a disability round supermarkets and cafes to tell them about a local access group I’ve set up, and the stories are coming thick and fast. (I’m still trying to fathom how the amputee I spoke to yesterday can’t get a powerchair or scooter funded through the state. What is he supposed to do? Hop?) But sometimes – very occasionally – I have cause to hope…
Beyond Barriers: the world’s first wheelchair-accessible safari-
August 24, 2023 | Source: Condé Nast Traveller- Africa
Defining disability has long been a contentious and polarising endeavour. For some, the word carries a heavy burden; for others, it’s a source of pride. Each person’s relationship with the label will be as complex, personal and nuanced as their impairments themselves. There is no single definition, no one size fits all, but in recent years our community has agreed to move away from the medical model of defining disability and towards the social model. This new way of looking at the term outlines that disability is created by society and the environments in which we live – not by our individual impairments…

Accessible Independent Travel Is for All Ages and Abilities-
August 24, 2023 | Source: Atlas Obscura- India
Let’s face it, you don’t get to more than 60 countries across six continents without a lot of planning, perseverance, and creative thinking. From her home in Bengaluru, in southern India, Sudha Mahalingam has explored some of the world’s most remote destinations, from the temples on China’s sacred Mt. Emei to the towering dunes of Namibia, and its most iconic cities, from Chicago to Venice. The retired professor and economist is something of a travel anti-influencer, eschewing selfies for immersive experiences, such as sailing up the Mekong River on a trip of “leisurely discovery.”
