Inside NYU’s Mission To Make Navigating New York City’s Subways Accessible To All
September 18, 2023 | Source: Forbes
For John-Ross Rizzo, riding New York City’s subways by himself is scary. Rizzo, an NYU professor who’s known for his engineering work for disabled people, has been legally blind for the last two decades with a condition called retinal dystrophy. In an interview with me last month via videoconference, Rizzo described his functional vision as “sort of like looking through a big bubble tea straw… I have very little vision left.” As is common with Blind and low vision people taking public transit, Rizzo is constantly worrying about being pushed around the subway station and standing too close to the track…

The Taxi and Limousine Commission Misses Deadline to Make Half of All Taxis Wheelchair Accessible, Again
September 21, 2023 | Source: The City
The city has hit another delay in meeting a mandate established more than a decade ago to make half of the yellow taxi fleet wheelchair-accessible by 2020. The latest slowdown in the landmark 2013 settlement to a federal class-action lawsuit comes after the city blew a June 30 extension to ensure that 50% of all 13,587 medallion cabs can carry people in wheelchairs or motorized scooters. “We gave them a two-year extension and they still didn’t do it,” said Jean Ryan, a motorized scooter user and head of Disabled in Action, a plaintiff in the class-action lawsuit filed in 2011…

Why accessibility on social media can’t be an afterthought
September 15, 2023 | Source: Shots
Threads launched in July with a bang, with Meta’s challenger to Twitter amassing more than five million users in a matter of hours. It became the fastest app in history to reach 100 million users (according to Zuckerberg, reaching this milestone in just five days. It took the previous record holder, ChatGPT, two months to reach that landmark. With Elon Musk divisively remoulding Twitter into X, it felt as if Threads had struck and disrupted with perfect timing. But it hasn’t been as easy since for the new kid on the social media block…

Increased accessibility on Capitol Hill should be a priority, not a joke
September 15, 2023 | Source: Roll Call
Last week, Roll Call published a “Capitol stair lift” cartoon illustrating members of Congress utilizing a chair lift and mobility aids. It featured a flippant depiction of the United States Senate as a “Senate Assisted Legislative Facility.” The cartoon was ableist and careless. Regardless of its intent surrounding a wider public discussion about the age and critical faculties of members of Congress, the cartoon implies that disability and the use of mobility aids impede one’s ability to effectively legislate and serve the American people…
Feds Urged To Classify Disability As A Health Disparity
September 18, 2023 | Source: Disability Scoop
Disability advocates are asking the Biden administration to step in after a government advisory panel squashed plans to put more resources toward addressing the persistent disparities people with disabilities face in the health care system. The National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities rejected a plan earlier this month to designate those with disabilities as a health disparity population…

September 18, 2023 | Source: The Wilderness Society
When we talk about outdoor adventures, we usually envision breathtaking landscapes, thrilling hikes, or serene lakes. But for people with disabilities, accessing and enjoying the wonders of nature can be a real struggle. In the United States alone, more than one in four adults have some form of disability, with Black and Indigenous people having higher rates of disability. Disabilities can range from mobility differences to neurodivergence. It’s important to recognize that people with disabilities are a diverse group with a wide range of needs, and ensuring access to the outdoors and welcoming spaces remains an ongoing challenge for many…

Laws have changed around parking for disabled Texans over the years. Here’s how it looks today
September 20, 2023 | Source: Texas Tribune
For millions of disabled Texans, accessible parking is vital to navigating daily life. A lasting impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act passed in 1990, the blue signage and crosshatches between spots have become more common than ever. They make it possible for people with a range of disabilities — some visible, some not — to access everything from hospitals and clinics to movie theaters and amusement parks. In Texas, almost 28% of people have a disability, according to a 2021 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention…

Plaintiffs Ralph Yaniz and Douglas McCormick filed a class action lawsuit against the White Sox, claiming most accessible single-game tickets are also not available for sale online. Instead, those with disabilities must call and get whatever White Sox tickets are available via phone instead of being able to view and choose from all available tickets online like other ticket purchasers can do…
New PROWAG Guidelines a Major Advance for ADA (and All Pedestrians)
September 20, 2023 | Source: Strong Towns
The landmark Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law in 1990, and the changes in the built environment it spawned have made the United States a world leader in enabling access to users with mobility limitations. Design features such as ramps at building entrances, automated doors, and seating areas for wheelchair users in auditoriums and stadiums have become commonplace. Despite some monumental strides, disability-rights advocates have long argued that there are still many holes in public policy and challenges in the physical landscape…

Gateway removed the complaint to federal court and moved for dismissal…

The term ‘neurodivergence’ encapsulates cognitive and developmental conditions like color blindness, ADHD, and autism. About 15%-20% of the world’s population is neurodiverse. But the financial industry rarely keeps the needs of this consumer segment in mind when designing its products and services. The fallout? Neurodiverse individuals find financial services and products difficult to use, which negatively impacts their financial health. About 38% of those with cognitive conditions in the US report feeling financially vulnerable…

A day out in Dublin as a young wheelchair user: Broken glass, dog poo, full buses and out-of-order ramps
September 16, 2023 | Source: The Irish Times- Ireland
I’m waiting for a bus in a south Dublin suburb with my friend Emma. The sun is shining, and I’m excited at the prospect of a day out in Dublin. I’d like to say excitement is all I’m feeling but as a teenager with a disability – I have cerebral palsy – and a wheelchair user, there are mixed emotions: fear and worry with a generous side order of existential dread. These feelings are not groundless. They are based on years of trying to navigate the city I call home on four wheels…

Yet, she had always felt that the government’s training programmes were not suited to the differently abled employees…

When Phillip Emmerson travels on the sidewalks in southwestern Manitoba’s biggest city, it takes constant vigilance to ensure his wheelchair doesn’t catch on any obstacles. His journeys in Brandon are full of impediments. At one point he wheels over an uneven railway line before hitting a piece of raised sidewalk. He speeds up before the crossing to ensure he has the momentum to cross it — but he risks crashing if his front tires catch where the street joins the sidewalk…
