Similarly, within the push for greater digital accessibility and improvements in assistive technology, 2023 has ushered in immense successes and unfortunate failures among the industry’s leading forces and pioneers — a clash of creativity and profit alongside a wider cultural conversation on the need for increased support and visibility for the disability community…
Nonprofit fighting for access for disabled says Foxboro state police barracks needs a ramp
June 11, 2023 | Source: The Sun Chronicle
A non-profit group fighting for wheelchair accessibility is pushing for the state to install a ramp at the Foxboro state police barracks. Citizens for Access Inc., a Newton-based non-profit, says the barracks is not in compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act because it lacks accessibility for the disabled. The landmark 1990 legislation prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in everyday activities. Maryan Amaral, president of Citizens for Access, says the solution is simple: install a wheelchair accessible ramp at the front of the Route 1 building…

Despite Gaps, Telehealth Can Increase Access to Care in Minnesota
June 12, 2023 | Source: mHealthIntelligence
A study from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) indicated that amid the growth of telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic, in-state residents reported a relatively high level of satisfaction, along with increased usage of telehealth for behavioral health services. A new law in Minnesota extends audio-only telehealth coverage beyond the expected end date of June 2023. This, along with increased telehealth use throughout the last several years, led the Minnesota Legislature to ask MDH to conduct a study examining telehealth and its future in the state…

How Dealers’ Concerns About Accessibility Pushed Basel’s Liste Art Fair to Relocate
June 12, 2023 | Source: ARTnews
A video artwork by French artist Florian Fouche at Parliament gallery’s booth at the Liste Art Fair shows the artist’s father, who is hemiplegic, navigating the streets of Paris in a wheelchair. It is unlikely that Fouche’s father—or, for that matter, any wheelchair users at Liste’s VIP preview today—could have navigated the art fair’s previous venue, a maze-like former brewery. The fair’s decision to stay in the convention center where Art Basel is held for several more years, as opposed to returning to its longtime home, hinged in part on dealers’ concerns about accessibility…

Why disabled users joined the Reddit blackout
June 13, 2023 | Source: The Verge
The Reddit blackout is in its second day as more than 8,000 communities go dark to protest the tech giant’s plans to implement API pricing that users say is too high, too fast. It’s created a ripple effect from bored people not being able to access r/relationships to academics missing r/AskHistorians. In the process, it’s also highlighted an issue that often lurks in the darkness: accessibility. Subreddits like r/blind, r/HardofHearing, and r/deaf are relatively small, but their concerns loom large in the protest…

June 14, 2023 | Source: New York Post
As the owner of a Manhattan small business, Tiffany Keriakos realizes the city isn’t for the meek. But rampant crime, merciless hackers and a looming federal lawsuit are pushing her luxury consignment shop to the brink. Keriakos sells preowned luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Dolce and Gabbana and Burberry at Designer Revival on the Upper East Side. This month a shoplifter stole three bags valued at a total value of $8,000 from the E81st Street store. Creating inclusive communities: Advocating for accessibility and dialogue in NJ
June 15, 2023 | Source: northjersey.com
When we examine the word “disability,” it is striking that it contains the word “ability.” It reminds us that individuals with disabilities possess unique talents and capabilities. However, not everything within our communities is accessible to individuals with disabilities. As a 35-year-old woman with a physical disability, I yearn for increased accessibility within our municipalities, enabling me to lead a more independent life. Whether the absence of hearing loops for the hearing impaired or the lack of ramps to access places of worship, numerous barriers prevent me and others from fully participating and engaging independently in community life…

RightHear Is Israel’s ‘Waze For The Blind’

Every morning in prayers, Jews recite a blessing thanking God for “opening the eyes of the blind.” The Talmud asks if a blind person should recite this blessing given that the blind cannot actually see. And so, RightHear is doing just that in fulfillment of the spirit of this blessing. As Israel marked “Blind Day,” the Knesset launched a new audio guidance system, one of the many accessibility facilities and initiatives in use in the parliament complex…
