April 15, 2025 | Source: The Bulwark
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Thursday at a White House cabinet meeting he is months away from determining the cause of the “autism epidemic.” The audacious claim came with a prediction from Kennedy – that he would “eliminate” future “exposures” that he said were responsible for an alarming uptick in the number of US children diagnosed with autism in recent decades. At a televised Trump administration cabinet meeting, Kennedy said he was working tirelessly to tackle the issue – one he has controversially commented on for decades…

DOGE abruptly cut a program for teens with disabilities. This student is ‘devastated’
April 14, 2025 | Source: NPR
If you visit the website for Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), you’ll find a “Wall of Receipts” listing more than 7,000 federal contracts it has terminated. Little detail is provided, besides the “savings” from each cancellation, and it’s hard to determine the cost or collateral damage of all these cuts. But for some families, there has been a cost. One of these programs, cancelled on Feb. 10, was called Charting My Path for Future Success…
Facing Our Dobbs Moment for Disability Rights
April 14, 2025 | Source: Nonprofit Quarterly
The impact of the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision that overturned the constitutional right to an abortion extends far beyond reproductive rights. This legal decision revealed the compounded barriers that individuals at the intersection of disability, race, and gender face. By enabling state-level abortion restrictions, the court’s decision raised alarming parallels for disability rights advocates, particularly regarding individual autonomy in medical decision-making, access to essential healthcare, and the protection of established legal rights…

There was a time George Finley Jr. was on the honor roll. After the seventh grader started having epileptic seizures a couple of years ago, he experienced memory loss. Now, he’s far behind where he should be academically. The Detroit Public Schools Community District agreed in November to pay for outside tutoring to help him catch up, records show. That still hasn’t happened, and the school year is near its end. “My son is not progressing,” said his mother, Sheri King…

They are advocating for more accessible crossing signals that provide an audible alert to cross. Mentions of race, gender and, in some cases, disabilities have been scrubbed from an upcoming report from a federal task force aimed at improving veterans’ access to parks and other outdoor recreation, according to copies of different versions of the report reviewed by Military.com and a task force member who resigned in protest of the changes. The censored report from the Interagency Task Force on Outdoor Recreation for Veterans is the latest example of how the Trump administration’s efforts to curtail what it frames as diversity efforts run amok…

April 17, 2025 | Source: Vogue
With the rise of MomTok and mom-influencer chic, the cultural conversation around parenting has seemingly never been louder. Still, the voices of disabled parents—who number in the millions across the United States—far too frequently go unheard. Jessica Slice’s new book Unfit Parent: A Disabled Mother Challenges an Inaccessible World cuts boldly and beautifully through that silence, inviting readers to imagine what our world might look like if we met every family where they are, rather than assuming that all parents are similarly abled…
California’s workforce transformation must include people with disabilities
April 17, 2025 | Source: The Business Journal
We have something in common with Gov. Gavin Newsom and his views on reimagining the California workforce. Like the governor, we believe California needs a workforce transformation that drives economic prosperity and access to good-paying jobs. That includes people with disabilities, with full mentally acuity or developmentally disabled, sighted or blind and beyond…

April 11, 2025 | Source: ABS-CBN News- Philippines
Move as One, a coalition advocating for sustainable and inclusive transport in the Philippines, has called for a more proactive approach to mobility accessibility. It emphasized that their needs must be integrated into city planning rather than treated as an afterthought. “Lagi nating ginagamit ang salitang ‘inclusive’ pero minsan pakiramdam namin, parang tokenism lang. Naiisip lang kami kapag may insidente, kapag may nakita ang media. Pero paano kung wala? Kasama ba talaga kami sa plano?” said Dr. Maureen Ava Mata, the coalition’s communications consultant, who relies on crutches for mobility…

Former Chief Justice of India, Dr. DY Chandrachud, has spoken candidly about his family’s ongoing struggle to find a residence in Delhi that accommodates the special needs of his two differently-abled daughters, even as he prepares to vacate his official bungalow by April 30. “We have two beautiful daughters, who have needs, but it has been difficult to find a house to cater to their needs. Every public space is the same. For too long, our society has kept the disabled under the curtain of ignorance and suppression,” Justice Chandrachud said while addressing a panel discussion titled “Disability Rights and Beyond”, hosted by Mission Accessibility…

Kids sought out oversized, 3D-printed eggs that make beeping sounds. They could then trade the eggs in for chocolate. “It provides children that may or may not have had the opportunity to do an Easter egg hunt because of their sight loss or other abilities that they may have,” says Craig Peterson, CNIB Alberta/Sask. executive director…
When design excludes: Why accessibility must be taught in tech and design classrooms
April 13, 2025 | Source: The News Minute- India
When a routine software update rolled out for a leading banking app last year, a person with visual impairment found himself suddenly locked out of his finances. The update had removed screen reader compatibility—a basic accessibility feature that allowed him to navigate the app independently. Overnight, he lost access to his salary account, savings, and credit cards, all because accessibility was not part of the design team’s considerations. Unfortunately, this experience is not an exception…
Paul Challinor: Why I Created Deaf Careers – A New Job Site by and for the Deaf Community (BSL)
April 15, 2025 | Source: The Limping Chicken- UK
As a Deaf person, I know first-hand how frustrating the job search can be. So many job sites aren’t built with us in mind – no BSL, no visual-friendly layouts, and no clue about accessibility. It often feels like we’re expected to squeeze into systems that were never designed for us. That’s why I created Deaf Careers – a UK-based job board built for the Deaf community, by someone who understands exactly how broken the system can feel. I wanted to build a platform that actually works for us – and more importantly, with us…

Accessibility plans criticised at council meeting
April 17, 2025 | Source: Bristol24/7- UK
Councillors voted unanimously by 57-0 last October for a motion to improve how accessible the city is. A meeting of the full council was told disabled people faced barriers getting around. Many of the suggestions focused on transport, such as exploring whether to extend the Diamond bus pass, valid only from 9am, to 24 hours and investigating whether to allow disabled drivers through bus gates. Bristol City Council’s transport and connectivity committee is doing this work but an update on the broader policies, including giving people with disabilities more of a say in the authority’s decisions, was given to the strategy and resources committee…

Prioritising Accessibility Of Differently-Abled People As A Right
April 17, 2025 | Source: CodeBlue- India
An accessibility audit conducted by the Punjab University a few months ago revealed shocking details of apathy towards people with physical disabilities: of 99 buildings that were surveyed, none was found to have facilities that would aid people with different degrees of disabilities. Additionally, the university campus lacked Braille signages, pavements and tactile paving. Earlier this year, the Comptroller and Auditor General’s office found “pre-access audits” on 80 per cent of public buildings were not conducted before retrofitting them to make them accessible by persons with disabilities (PwDs)…

The Mayor and Mayoress of Eastleigh have been shopping in the town’s centre wearing goggles designed to impair their vision. They want to improve accessibility for those living with a visual impairment (VI) and raise awareness among other town councils.
