Blind Navy veteran Joel Price has filed more than 120 lawsuits against city and county governments and businesses, saying their websites aren’t accessible to the visually impaired. That’s because those websites don’t work with screen reader programs. Some local governments have already settled and spent tens of thousands of tax dollars to make the changes. Florida School for the Deaf & the Blind Assistant Technology Coordinator Patrick Turnage relies on screen reader programs to access information online…

Attention businesses: Are your websites and mobile apps ADA compliant?
May 10, 2019 | Source: Philadelphia Business Journal
In January of this year, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit held in Robles v. Domino’s Pizza, LLC, 913 F.3d 898 (9th Cir. 2019), that Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”) applies to businesses’ websites and mobile apps. Title III prohibits discrimination against disabled individuals in “places of public accommodation,” and until a recent wave of litigation over the last few years filed by creative plaintiff’s lawyers, very few businesses even considered the possibility that websites (let alone mobile apps) were subject to the ADA…

May 10, 2019 | Source: Fashionista
“People ask me all the time if it is the larger things that trip me up when it comes to having a disability,” says Shannon Dawn. “It really isn’t. It is the smaller things, like tying shoes, putting on underwear — little things that you wouldn’t expect.” That’s where Slick Chicks comes in. The adaptive underwear line is pushing the boundaries of accessibility in the undergarment world and educating its customers along the way. The term “adaptive clothing” refers to garments designed with people with physical disabilities and limitations in mind…

The Americans With Disability Act Of 1990 Poses Legal Challenge For Winery Websites Today
May 10, 2019 | Source: Forbes
You might ask: what does the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) have to do with selling wine? Plenty, is the answer from Barbara Snider, at Hinman & Carmichael, LLP. According to Snider, “ There is an on-going ADA regulations battle being waged against commercial websites ; including those operated by wineries and other alcoholic beverage industry members.” Many small companies have been targeted by ADA compliance lawsuits lately, but Snider says, “Wineries and alcoholic beverage industry members are the new targets…” and it’s happening online…

Mobile apps give the blind and visually impaired a new sense of freedom
May 13, 2019 | Source: CNET
Ask anyone who was around before smartphones, and they’ll tell you life was different. But for Nutsiri “Earth” Kidkul, who went blind eight years ago, life-changing doesn’t begin to describe the impact of mobile apps. Before specialized apps came along, Kidkul would have to plan and prepare much more for basic tasks like grocery shopping, traveling or reading documents. What’s more, Kidkul often needed assistance from other people to go about her day…

KABC reports on Fessenden’s push to design braille menus for local restaurants, so that he and other patrons can read the menus at favorite establishments. In a world of rapidly advancing technology it’s crucial to ensure companies and organizations are doing their best to make digital developments accessible to everyone. While browsing the internet, catching up on social media, or texting on mobile devices might seem like second nature to some, accessibility-related barriers prevent millions of people with disabilities from easily using basic forms of technology and, in some cases, even discourage them from going online…

When the first iPhone came out in 2007, Erin Lauridsen was frustrated. As someone who’s blind, she was worried cellphone technology would leave people with disabilities behind. Thankfully, when the iPhone 3GS rolled out two years later, it came with VoiceOver, a screen reading technology that’s part of Apple’s iOS mobile operating system. Ten years later, Lauridsen uses her iPhone XR, along with free or low-cost accessibility apps from the App Store, to check her calendar, send emails and follow maps…
Is Your Business Organizationally Ready to Hire People with Disabilities?
May 13, 2019 | Source: CEOWORLD Magazine
People with disabilities are the largest minority in the world yet in the U.S., these individuals are twice as likely as their non-disabled peers to be unemployed, often referred to as being underemployed. I see it as being underestimated. Executives are typically not thinking about people with disabilities as college educated, skilled, high-potential leaders who have unique, innovative ideas ; rather if they do think of this segment in an employment context, it’s about compliance-related issues and requirements and/or bias (conscious and unconscious), due to fear of the unknown…

“Inclusive” playgrounds go beyond accessibility to helping communities thrive
May 14, 2019 | Source: Franklin Home Page
While the Americans with Disabilities Act may have been well-intentioned with its guidelines for children’s play space that became law in 2010, the whole idea of it actually has been quite limiting. That’s part of the message that Jill Moore, marketing and inclusion specialist with the Minnesota-based Landscape Structures, delivered at Franklin Tomorrow’s FrankTalks session Monday at High Hopes Development Center. The theme focused on inclusive playgrounds, which are part of the plan for Franklin’s proposed Southeast Park…

In January it became illegal to park in a van accessible space if you do not have a van accessible sticker on top of your handicapped plate, but one woman said she still sees people misusing these spaces. “Most people, when they park in these spots, they’re like ‘Oh, it’ll be just for a minute, or there’s tons of spots it won’t really affect anyone,’” Marti Boren said. Designing products for people with disabilities has never been so important
May 16, 2019 | Source: TNW
In March 2019 IKEA was praised for partnering with nonprofits to develop accessories that make its products more accessible for people with impairments. It’s a novel step forward but I can’t shake the feeling we need to reframe the conversation on accessibility in technology entirely. Accessibility should be a topic at the forefront of design. Here’s why: Roughly one in five people in the US have registered with a disability, with a similar figure for the UK…

Boston is the birthplace of American independence. Established nearly 400 years ago, it’s where angry colonists revolted against British tea taxes, where the Revolutionary War commenced and where a judicial decree made Massachusetts the first U.S. state to abolish slavery. For residents with disabilities, however, Boston hasn’t always lived up to its promise of liberty. To them, Boston won’t be a truly free city until it’s a truly accessible one. “The city of Boston is an old city,” says Boston native Christos Koutrobis, whose father John Koutrobis has lived with multiple sclerosis for about 36 years…

Laws alone aren’t the answer for improving disability access, expert at Ottawa summit says
May 9, 2019 | Source: Ottawa Citizen- Canada
When it comes to accessibility, casinos lead the way. “Las Vegas figured out a long time ago that older people and seniors were the ones who sit at slot machines,” said Brad McCannell, vice-president of access and inclusion for the Rick Hansen Foundation. “They started accommodation long before the ADA because they saw it’s the little things, McCannell said, referring to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The casinos replaced the standard slot machine stools with sturdier chairs with back rests and armrests that older people need to push off to stand up…

Kaushik, a senior application developer with an e-commerce platform in the UK who works with complex software, is blind. So he has no use for a screen or a mouse. And he can code just as fast — and well — as the next guy who can see. Coming to his aid is assistive software called “screen reader” that converts written text into speech. So, too often, they are unable to access the same services or information as easily as everyone else. A recent study by Ofcom, for example, found that disabled people are less likely to use websites and apps due to widespread, alienating web design…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
