This July will mark 28 years since President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. According to the Computer History Museum, five months after the ADA was enacted, Tim Berners-Lee prototyped the “WorldWideWeb” featuring a server, HTML, URLs, and the first browser. These two momentous events have changed the course of how society functions on a day-to-day basis, leveling many a playing field by providing easier, more expedient access to public accommodations, government services, and information. While they’ve existed in parallel, the ADA and the web have now collided….

Researchers Find Herpes Viruses In Brains Marked By Alzheimer’s Disease
June 21, 2018 | Source: NPR
Two common herpes viruses appear to play a role in Alzheimer’s disease. The viruses, best known for causing a distinctive skin rash in young children, are abundant in brain tissue from people with Alzheimer’s, a team of scientists reports Thursday in Neuron. The team also found evidence that the viruses can interact with brain cells in ways that could accelerate the disease. “Our hypothesis is that they put gas on the flame,” says Joel Dudley, an author of the study and an associate professor of genetics and genomic sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai in New York City…

How Feds Can Ensure Everyone Can Access Tech Tools
June 22, 2018 | Source: FedTech Magazine
Agencies have been making their IT systems accessible to users with disabilities since 1973, when Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act made it a requirement. Now IT teams have a new challenge with regard to accessibility. The U.S. Access Board released a new set of Section 508 requirements in 2017 designed to meet modern accessibility standards. Compliance with those standards became mandatory for federal agencies on Jan. 18. (Legacy technology that complies with the original standard is exempt.)…

‘Dying at your desk is not a retirement plan’
June 15, 2018 | Source: Washington Post
Low incomes, paltry savings, high debt burdens, failed insurance—the U.S. is upending decades of progress in securing life’s final chapter. Americans are reaching retirement age in worse financial shape than the prior generation, for the first time since Harry Truman was president. This cohort should be on the cusp of their golden years. Instead, their median incomes including Social Security and retirement-fund receipts haven’t risen in years, after having increased steadily from the 1950s…

However, once you or a loved one encounters an illness or disability that results in dependence on a wheelchair, your perspective is likely to change dramatically. Fortunately, there are numerous options you can explore to improve mobility and accessibility if you or a loved one becomes reliant on a wheelchair or other assisted mobility…

A wounded veteran finds salvation on the golf course
June 22, 2018 | Source: Golf World
Learning to play golf with two good hands is hard enough. Imagine trying it for the first time with only one hand. This was former U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ramon Padilla’s introduction, and, amazingly, it took just a handful of swings before he flushed a 5-iron 150 yards and was awestruck. “I thought golf was a sissy sport,” says Padilla, a football and baseball standout in high school whose nickname was Ramon Chingon (Badass Ramon). “But when I hit that shot, the flight of the ball was one of the most gorgeous things I’d ever seen in my life.”…

How Can Developers Build Accessibility Bridges for Deafness and Gaming?
June 25, 2018 | Source: DualShockers
As someone who has a first-hand experience with deafness and gaming — someone who wears hearing aids — I’ve found myself cowering behind shelter in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds as a friend instantly pinpoints the direction of a sniper from miles away; meanwhile, I can’t locate them on just audio alone. I’ve played plenty of narrative-driven games like Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and had to squint and move closer to the TV to read the puny subtitles…
The Real Reason You Use Closed Captions for Everything Now
June 26, 2018 Sourced: Wired
In this moment, there is only one thing I wish to know, and those are the words coming out of Sylvester Stallone’s mouth—if indeed they are words. I’m watching Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Incomprehensibly, Stallone has a small part in it, speaking, as he often does, incomprehensibly. But, gosh, he looks very important. Therefore he must be saying something important. Probably the whole of this film depends on it. So I rewind Netflix, one of life’s more torturous little rituals…

Greenville County polling place challenged to meet ADA requirements during primaries
June 26, 2018 | Source: Greenville News
At least one polling place in Greenville County was forced to come up with a temporary solution to comply with federal requirements for voting accessibility during Tuesday’s primary runoffs. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, a polling place must hold voting on the same level as its building’s entrance. If that’s not possible, there should be an elevator that can take people to the correct level. Temporary fixes, like portable ramps, door stops and alternative entrances are also allowed under ADA…

We want to hear from them, and we want them to have a say in the decisions that are made for things that are being planned for them.”…

June 27, 2018 | Source: New York Times
Michael Golfo, who is legally blind, began to inch off the curb at Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street on his way home from work on Tuesday after sensing the whir of traffic moving to his left. Then he felt a tug of resistance from his guide dog, Tom. “I did not have the light,” said Mr. Golfo, 43, recalling how Tom “basically stopped me from going any further into danger.” On Wednesday, Mr. Golfo was among the plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit alleging that the city is violating the rights of the visually impaired by failing to update most of the city’s crosswalks with accessible pedestrian signals that use vibrating surfaces, noises and other vocal cues as a safety guide.

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Our digital and web accessibility services cover
- Accessibility Audit Services — Our comprehensive audit will map all findings to internationally recognized WCAG 2.0 AA standards and equip you and your technical and content teams to know what areas need to be brought into compliance.
- Accessible Elearning Development — Does your online training reach all learners, whether they’re your employees, resellers, students? Let us help you design effective, engaging training that works for everyone.
- Accessible Website and Application Development — An inaccessible website or application is increasingly seen as violating the ADA. Let’s talk about creating an online presence that reaches all your customers and reduces your litigation risk.
- Audit and Testing Services — A thorough accessibility audit against recognized accessibility standards will show you where you may be under-serving your customers and putting your organization at risk.
- Accessible Document Services — Digital assets such as Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, PDFs, and audio and video files need to be accessible to individuals with disabilities, too. We can help you establish creation processes or remediate historical documents so that they meet accessibility standards and are usable by people with disabilities.
- Remediation Services — Whether for a time-sensitive response to a legal action, or for proactive remediation, we can fix what doesn’t meet accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Training — Contact us to get your teams introduced and informed about accessibility best practices.
Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
