January 31, 2019 | Source: Scarlet and Black
Most students have probably visited the third floor of the Joe Rosenfield ’20 Center at least once in their time at Grinnell, whether they were picking up their room key, gaining permission to have a guest stay over or visiting one of the many resource offices housed on that floor. One of those offices is the Office of Accessibility and Disability Resources, which provides assistance to students with disabilities in many different facets of their lives at Grinnell. Writing about her position as Assistant Dean of Disability Resources at the College, Autumn Wilke described the responsibilities of her job…

Website accessibility lawsuits nearly tripled in 2018
February 7, 2019 | Source: HR Dive
As we had predicted, the number of website accessibility lawsuits (i.e. lawsuits alleging that plaintiffs with a disability could not use websites because they were not coded to work with assistive technologies like screen readers, or otherwise accessible to them) filed in federal court under Title III of the ADA exploded in 2018 to at least 2258 – increasing by 177% from 814 such lawsuits in 2017. Plaintiffs filed these federal ADA Title III lawsuits in fourteen states—New York and Florida being the most busy jurisdictions with 1564 and 576 lawsuits, respectively…
People with disabilities use lived expertise to make public spaces better
February 1, 2019 | Source: BU News Service
The Institute for Human-Centered Design’s West End office has no stairs – only ramps. Round white panels hanging from the ceiling absorb sound to reduce echo and make communication easier. “We have built-in bidets in our toilets. We have automatic faucets and lights,” says Valerie Fletcher, the Institute’s executive director. “We learn all the time, though, about how we can modify things to make them better.” Their office is part of their mission to promote inclusive design…
Videos help faculty understand importance of inclusive technology
February 4, 2019 | Source: Colorado State University
Since it was first implemented in 2004, Colorado State University’s electronic information and technologies accessibility policy has helped make more learning materials available to all, including individuals with disabilities. The need for accessible materials has evolved over that time, on two fronts. First, there is the issue of compliance with federal regulations, including the Americans with Disabilities Act: Fifty universities were sued in November 2018 over accessibility of their websites, in addition to countless complaints filed with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights over the years…
Disabled angry over lack of access at Polis inaugural
February 4, 2019 | Source: Pueblo Chieftain
Disabled people could not participate in Gov. Jared Polis’s inauguration on Jan. 8 because the event had no access for them at the state Capitol, according to the Colorado Cross Disability Coalition, which offered in December to help the governor’s staff plan the event. “I think there ought to be some kind of apology,” said Kristen Castor, a Pueblo woman and advocate for the coalition. “I’m tired of it. The Americans With Disabilities Act is nearly 30-years old and we’re still dealing with problems like this.”…
Google debuts new Android apps for the hard of hearing
February 4, 2019 | Source: Engadget & Mashable
Over the past few years, Google has created multiple applications with accessibility in mind. Yet, most of these apps have focused on users who have physical or visual impairments. Examples include last year’s Voice Access and Lookout apps. Now, the company wants to provide better support for users who are deaf or hard of hearing as well. As part of this effort, Google is rolling out two new apps — Live Transcribe and Sound Amplifier — starting today…
Websites need to be more accessible for people with disabilities
February 5, 2019 | Source: Vox
Beyoncé got an unwelcome New Year’s present in January: a lawsuit from a blind woman who says her website is inaccessible because it’s presented as a “purely visual interface” that makes it impossible for blind and low-vision people to use. According to the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), these kinds of barriers to access are a violation of civil rights, limiting communication and participation in society. Instead of abating over time thanks to increased documentation on web accessibility and pressure from the disability community, this problem is only getting worse…
Accessibility in Retail
February 5, 2019 Source: Rehacare
It’s often the small things: demand bells and mobile ramps, sign language operation or trained staff dealing with customers with various disabilities –all of this can ensure that the stationary retail becomes more accessible. And the demand is there. Which solutions are already being implemented can be found in the current Topic of the Month February: Accessibility in retail., a series of articles about how the retail industry is incorporating accessible solutions into their stores…

February 5, 2019 | Source: FlaglerLive (PDF) & Daytona Beach News-Journal
Flagler County government will pay $15,700 to settle a Napoleon-quoting federal lawsuit filed by a legally blind Daytona Beach man who charged that Flagler was violating the Americans With Disabilities Act by making some of the documents posted to its website inaccessible to the blind, because computer software can’t read the pdf’s. The County Commission Monday approved the settlement. But it’s on the first step in what will be a lengthy and potentially very expensive road to compliance…

State plans to ensure ‘universal access’ to Walden Pond
February 5, 2019 | Source: Wicked Local Concord
Walden Pond, where Henry David Thoreau spent two years in the 1840s, is one of Concord’s most-iconic landmarks. But steep entry ramps and stairways have made accessing the pond difficult for visitors who use wheelchairs or other mobility assistance devices. Fixing that and providing “universal access” to Walden Pond is the latest in a series of improvements proposed by the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation. In a Jan. 30 presentation, the DCR highlighted a number of flaws with the current facilities…
New Bill Would Phase Out Subminimum Wage for Workers With Disabilities
February 5, 2019 | Source: Truthout
Many members of the general public are unaware that it’s legal to pay disabled people subminimum wage. Indeed, a loophole in the Fair Labor Standards Act enables employers to offer people pennies on the dollar just because they’re disabled. Thanks to the Transformation to Competitive Employment Act, introduced in the House by Rep. Bobby Scott (D-IA) and the Senate by Bob Casey (D-PA), that’s about to change. This legislation would eliminate this exception in the law, requiring fair pay for disabled people — an estimated 420,000 of whom are being underpaid on the job…

February 7, 2019 Source: Gothamist
The MTA is jumping the gun by declaring more than 100 subway stations accessible when some only provide accessibility options to trains in one direction, according to a new survey by Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer’s office. Staff with the borough president’s office surveyed conditions at 42 Manhattan subway stations that the MTA has deemed accessible. Each stop was judged on criteria based off of constituent complaints and conversations with advocates, including functioning elevators, station signage, and appropriate features for vision-impaired riders such as raised braille and bright paint that delineates stairs…
Gary council to consider making itself more accessible to the disabled
February 6 , 2019 | Source: Chicago Tribune
The Gary Common Council will be studying what needs to do more to make its services more accessible to disabled residents. Councilwoman Rebecca Wyatt, D-1st, introduced a resolution Feb. 5 that calls for all meetings, public notices and legislation handled by the council be prepared in ways that all people can comprehend it. She said that currently, the city does the bulk of its government business in the printed word, which is a problem for people whose vision is limited and cannot easily read the ordinances and resolutions the council ponders…
Businesses ‘sitting ducks’ for lawsuits because websites aren’t ADA compliant
February 6, 2019 | Source: WLFA
The disabled plaintiffs call themselves activists working to improve society for the disabled, one lawsuit at a time. Critics call it “legal extortion,” now targeting small business owners who feel they are “sitting ducks” for ADA lawsuits regarding their websites that are not accessible to some with disabilities. Last year, there were 2,285 ADA website lawsuits filed in federal courts across the nation, an increase of a 181 percent from 2017. The majority of lawsuits originate in Florida and New York…
California Companies Likely to See More ADA Website Accessibility Suits in 2019
February 6, 2019 | Source: Law.com
Only 10 website accessibility lawsuits were filed in California’s federal courts last year, according to a new report—but that number could rise in 2019, lawyers said. A U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruling last month found Domino’s Pizza Inc.’s website must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, reversing a lower court’s decision. Kristina Launey, a labor and employment attorney at Seyfarth Shaw in Sacramento, said the ruling could make California’s federal courts a more attractive destination for website accessibility lawsuits…

The image, which the BBC has chosen to blur, was posted on Facebook earlier this month with the caption, “If you can see what’s wrong say I see it”, and has since been shared more than 33,000 times. It has led to a number of people explaining that mobiles and other technology can be used by visually impaired people, and, in some cases, can be a lifeline…
A Librarian’s View of E-Book Accessibility
January 31, 2019 | Source: Ebsco- Canada
As a librarian in the University of Queensland (UQ) Library’s Learning and Research Services team, I work directly with academic staff and students, and I believe that accessibility awareness needs to be present in everything we do. Universities have policies stating their commitment to equity for students and staff with a disability; when it comes to published material, it is often libraries who have the role of delivering on this commitment in practical terms. For example, will a student with low vision be able to access the wider reading required for an assignment, in a format they can use?…
E-book suppliers and digital platforms can now provide better accessibility support for disabled students
January 31, 2019 | Source: Jisc- UK
Digital content should be more accessible than hard copy print, allowing all students – and particularly disabled students – to be more productive and independent. But universities and colleges find it difficult to guarantee that disabled students will find books on their reading lists that are compatible with assistive technologies. The ASPIRE (accessibility statements promoting improved reading experience) project used an open, crowdsourced approach to turn a negative problem into a positive collaboration across 49 higher education institutions and a wide range of academic suppliers…
Lessons learned on accessibility, inclusion and diversity at RedMonk’s Monki Gras – listen up and take action
February 1, 2019 | Source: Diginomica- UK
We at diginomica talk a lot about the importance of diversity in the technology industry. One, because we think it’s important and the right thing to do. And two, because we believe that as more and more services move online, they should be designed by people that broadly reflect the society we live in. However, attending RedMonk’s annual Monki Gras event in London yesterday, I realised we have unintentionally missed out on covering the importance of accessibility and inclusion…

With the government recently announcing plans to make Changing Places toilets mandatory in all new large public buildings, Nicholas Bungay, director of strategy and external affairs at Habinteg, examines how to ensure venues are open to everyone. It’s reasonable to expect to be able to use a toilet when you’re out and about, whether for a football game, concert, show, public gathering, a visit to the shops and, well, for any everyday activity. If you agree with that statement, it should follow that there are a range of toilet facilities that meet everyone’s needs at all the above-mentioned venues…

Canada’s pending accessibility law comes off as the Liberals just fulfilling an election promise
February 7, 2019 | Source: CBC- Canada
Canada is finally on the verge of passing federal disability legislation. So why aren’t I, a disabled woman, celebrating? Because Bill C-81, the Accessible Canada Act is not the legislation many disabled Canadians asked for or need. Instead of being a consistently applied right, accessibility in Canada is still a “special treat” that some of us get to experience, sometimes. The hope for the ACA was that it would define accessibility broadly and specifically, spell out expectations, apply those widely and give disabled people the power to say…
