The plight of the blind gamer
November 29, 2017 | Source: The Routine
I remember when kids first started showing up to my elementary afterschool program with the marvel that was the Game Boy. One of them finally parted ways with his for a moment and let me have a turn at Super Mario Land. I had never experienced anything so cool — the Game Boy was like my prized NES at home, except it was portable. But I quickly realized the game was noticeably harder than anything I had ever played. The enemies in the foreground blended in with the background. The dot matrix screen was blurry. And everything was just so small…

This is a real Christmas gift. I’m very thankful for a device like this.”…
Surf’s Up! Don’t Become The Next Victim Of A Surfing Suit
December 1, 2017 | Source: Fisher Phillips
The past few years have seen a steep increase in litigation brought against hospitality businesses under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These suits often contend that certain aspects of a building, bathroom, or parking lot do not comply with the ADA’s detailed standards and regulations. With the goal of creating a physical environment that is navigable by all, Title III requires private businesses to accommodate guests with disabilities visiting their property by removing barriers to goods and services where such removal is “readily achievable” or “easily accomplishable and able to be carried out without much difficulty or expense.”…

This tool helps him get information online, work on his projects and carry with his daily tasks as editor for AccessWorld, a magazine of the American Foundation of the Blind (AFB) that provides technology news for the blind and visually impaired…
Sign language interpreter delivered gibberish in Florida
December 4, 2017 | Source: ABC News
earing-impaired people tuning in to a news conference about the arrest of a suspected serial killer last week in Florida got a message of gibberish from an American Sign Language interpreter. As Tampa police Chief Brian Dugan announced the arrest of Howell Donaldson Wednesday night, interpreter Derlyn Roberts was there beside him, making signs that made no sense. “She sat up there and waved her arms like she was singing Jingle Bells,” Rachell Settambrino, who is deaf and teaches American Sign Language at the University of South Florida, told the Tampa Bay Times through an interpreter…

December 3, 2017 | Source: LA Daily News
A simple view of the Hollywood sign. Building Legos… It’s stuff we might take for granted. Not these children. For nine visually impaired young people from the L.A. area to the Inland Empire, seeing objects up close became a reality last week. Western University of Health Sciences and Sight Savers America came together at WesternU’s L.A. Eye Care Insitute to offer training in using the Freedom Scientific Onyx HD Electronic Video Magnifier. Don’t let the big name turn you off…
City offers Uber a deal in wheelchair battle
December 4, 2017 | Source: Crain’s New York Business
The Taxi and Limousine Commission is offering a deal to a coalition of ride-hail and car-service companies, but it’s not clear Uber and its new allies are going to take it. A controversial plan to require wheelchair-accessible service across the hired-car industry appears to be heading toward a vote despite objections from operators. But even as the Taxi and Limousine Commission has offered an alternative as a compromise, Uber and its allies are saying it’s not enough. They’re not the only unhappy ones. Disability advocates object to the city’s offer…

ADA compliance still an issue on campus with older buildings
December 4, 2017 | Source: The Wichitan
Living with a disability means there is a certain dependency on ramps, braille, elevators and automatic doors in buildings. But although the Americans with Disabilities Act has now enforced buildings to include these things, students with disabilities are still faced with buildings that are not ADA compliant. President George H.W. Bush signed ADA into law in July 1990. The act enforced an end to discrimination against people with disabilities in the workforce and public education system…
Chicago institutions strive for inclusion
December 4, 2017 | Source: The Columbia Chronicle
When Christena Gunther moved to Chicago from New York City in 2012, she was distressed by the city’s lack of access to cultural spaces for people with disabilities. The issue had been her passion since childhood, and she had worked on it for the Metropolitan Museum and Lincoln Center. So in April 2013, she founded the Chicago Cultural Accessibility Consortium to work with local cultural institutions to promote accessibility. In the years since, Gunther said, some larger organizations have improved access…
New York stores caught in web of litigation
December 5, 2017 | Source: Crain’s New York Business
After President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, businesses spent big sums installing wheelchair ramps and clearing impediments that prevented disabled people from entering their stores and offices. But many firms never got around to making their websites usable for the blind—an emerging issue in this era of e-commerce. Now a Manhattan lawyer is hauling local companies into court over this. Jeffrey Gottlieb last week brought suits against grocers Fairway Market, Gristedes and Key Food for operating websites that allegedly violate the ADA…
Feds OK plan to fix Magnet School accessibility
December 4, 2017 | Source: Foster’s Daily Democrat
The federal government has reportedly approved the Rochester School Department’s plan to partially renovate Maple Street Magnet School to deal with some, but not all, of the school’s accessibility issues. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights has been investigating Maple Street, a public K-5 school and the state’s only magnet school, because the two-story school has no handicapped-accessible ramps or entrances, no bathrooms on the first floor that are accessible to wheelchairs, and no elevator despite its cafeteria’s location on the second floor…
How City Planning Can Change an Anti-Aging Culture
December 4, 2017 | Source: Next City
U.S. cities can be unkind to elderly residents, with services and social opportunities spread out and access difficult for people without a personal vehicle or the ability to drive. Transit in many cities doesn’t fill the gap. People with limited mobility are poorly served by streets, sidewalks and other public spaces built with lax adherence to the accessibility requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Housing affordability can be a struggle for a senior citizen on a fixed income…

The rules target federal agencies, but are intended to be a reference point for states and cities…

Seniors living at home with peace of mind
December 7, 2017 | Source: ECM Publishers
As all of us grow older, one or more aspect of life can either be lost or compromised in varying degrees. The senior and special needs communities are no exception. Physical, cognitive and social deficits are only a few areas where people can experience profound loss. Grieving over how “life used to be” is also an issue that individuals and their families face at the onset or progression of a disability or chronic illness. But one aspect of life that both elderly and those with special needs cherish is independence…
Flying the Unfriendly Skies
December 5, 2017 | Source: New Mobility
I wasn’t looking for a platform. The platform came looking for me. When I was booking my first post-injury flight in the spring of 2016, a cross-country trip from Seattle to the East Coast for United Spinal’s Roll on Capitol Hill, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The dream vacation I spent months planning and thousands of dollars on in travel and lodging for my girlfriend, two caregivers, and me turned into every wheelchair traveler’s worst nightmare when United Airlines damaged my head-controlled Invacare TDX so badly that I wound up spending 11 of the 14 days without it at all…

December 1, 2017 | Source: Reliefweb- Samoa
The transport sector in Samoa, and within many Pacific Island countries, currently does not adequately cater to the needs of persons with disabilities. Championing the cause of people with disabilities, these companies show the way
December 1, 2017 | Source: Your Story- India
India is home to 2.7 crore people with disability, be it physical or mental, according to the 2011 Census. Making workplaces more inclusive: a work in progress
December 3, 2017 | Source: The Hindu- India
People with disabilities are not different from others in the workplace. They need the same things — to use the lift, talk to colleagues and business contacts, work on documents, be part of team training, apply for leave online, read the employee newsletter, even sip a beverage or enjoy a meal in the canteen — but may need the workplace to give them that access in different ways. Inclusion happens at multiple levels: societal, organisational, in teams, and on a one-to-one basis…
