AITN Quote of the Week
“When we say we want to build for everyone – we mean it. Accessibility is written into our mission statement and core to our values as a company. We don’t think a problem is solved until we’ve solved it for everyone. Technology’s great promise is to give everyone the same power to achieve their goals. As long as there are barriers for some, there’s still work to be done.” — Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google

Flying Tips for Wheelchair Users, From Wheelchair Users
March 8, 2019 | Source: New York Times
People often say that traveling is all about the journey and not the destination, but for wheelchair users, navigating air travel is often more of an adventure than they would like. Rolling through large crowded airports, hauling luggage, waiting in long lines, receiving a pat down, being strapped into a tiny aisle chair and then sitting for hours unable to move is exhausting. We’ve learned that the best way to circumvent some of the inevitable issues is to know what to expect, and prepare accordingly…

March 8, 2019 | Source: Bulletin
Junior Makenna Presnell is like other Gonzaga students. She studies for tests, eats at the COG and talks with friends. But Presnell said she doesn’t want to be seen as just another GU student. She was born with cerebral palsy, a lifelong disorder which affects the brain’s ability to communicate with other parts of the body. It’s because of this she doesn’t want to be treated like everyone else. She wants the university and her fellow students to start treating her like who she is: a GU student with a disability…

Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)-based discrimination claims alleging inaccessibility of business websites have exploded onto the scene over the last several years as one of the latest entrants into the so-called “drive by” (or, in this case, “surf by”) ADA litigation trend. Thousands of these claims, usually involving visually impaired persons, were filed nationwide in 2018, primarily in New York, Florida and Pennsylvania, with more than 1,500 cases clogging the dockets of the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Every business with a consumer-facing website is at risk…
Four Things I Learned When I Started Thinking about Museum Accessibility
March 8, 2019 | Source: American Alliance of Museums
I first started working with the Disabilities community in 2011. Over the years, I’ve worked with individuals of all ages in their homes, at their jobs, and in their communities. The state I live in, Rhode Island, has had to radically restructure the way it cares for older teens and adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD), from a network of segregated day facilities to a model of community integration, after the Department of Justice found the old practices violated the Americans with Disabilities Act…

Utah study finds most K-12 websites difficult to use for disabled community
March 10, 2018 | Source: Deseret News
In the 21st century, navigating a school’s website is an essential part of education. But a new study from BYU and Utah State University says certain web issues are alienating the U.S. disabled community. The study found that more than 95 percent of U.S. K-12 school websites had errors that made the page difficult for a person with a disability to use. Examples of these issues listed in the study anecdotally include no video transcript or caption options for a hard of hearing student, or text size formatting options for a visually impaired student or parent…

Voting Technology: The Innovations Set To Revolutionize Us Elections
March 13, 2019 | Source: Voices
To no one’s surprise, the U.S. presidential election is the most widely followed of any country on the planet. What is surprising is it also has one of the lowest voter turnout rates in the developed world. A large factor contributing to the low voter turnout is the inaccessibility of voting information and physical polling stations. According to a Metova survey of over 1,000 connected citizens, 67% of the citizens who didn’t vote in the last presidential election would have if they could have voted on a mobile device…

The real victims of the college admissions scams are people with disabilities

The experiences of 57 million Americans with disabilities are not just costumes to wear to get preboarding access to a plane or extended time on a test. Accessing those rights could become a lot harder now, thanks to well-heeled parents who are charged in a scheme to abuse disability accommodations in order to fake their children’s scores on college admissions exams. The ugliness of this alleged scam is even more apparent when we consider how expensive it is to have a real disability…

Microassist Digital Accessibility Services
Have you received an accessibility demand letter because of your website or application? Please contact us for any questions you have about our accessibility services and how we might support your organization.
Services include:
- Accessible Website and Application Development— We rely heavily on accessibility best practices and using HTML5 and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) standards to build WCAG-compliant and human-tested accessible environments. Our teams are proficient in open source technologies such as WordPress, Drupal and Moodle, as well as custom frameworks in .NET, PHP, AngularJS, and other frameworks. Our Learning and Development team can also help you create accessible custom training.
- Accessible Document Services— Whether you’re dealing with a few or a warehouse of Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, or other files, there are several ways Microassist can enable your team to offer documents and materials that meet stringent accessibility standards.
- Accessibility Remediation— Our accessibility remediation services help you fix existing materials so that they conform to WCAG, Section 504 and 508, Department of Education OCR, and ADA Title II/III requirements. We remediate websites, applications, documents, and elearning, recommending re-creation when that is more efficient and economical. Especially for website and applications, to find out what is in need of remediation, we’ll start with an Accessibility Audit.
- Accessibility Training— With several courses available for developers, testers, and content creators, your team can become equipped to consistently and expertly produce accessible digital products and online environments.
- VPAT®Evaluation Services— Primarily used by government purchasers and government vendors during the procurement and sale of ICT products and services under Section 508, a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template® (VPAT) attests to the accessibility of a given product or service. Contact us to make sure the VPAT you write or review is accurate and meaningful.
