April 6, 2018 | Source: AdvisorHub & Financial Advisor IQ
A legally blind man in New York has sued Morgan Stanley for negligence, alleging that its online wealth management services are largely inaccessible in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the state’s Human Rights Law. The complaint, which seeks $9 million in damages, was filed in U.S. Eastern District Court in Brooklyn on Thursday by Albert Rizzi, founder of a 501c(3) nonprofit organization called My Blind Spot. The organization seeks to “promote awareness among leaders in business, education and government about the critical importance of making their digital content accessible and usable to the disability community.”…
As Accessibility Falls Short, Students Take Charge
April 6, 2018 | Source: Georgetown University The Hoya
Anna Landre (SFS ’21) knew Georgetown University was her dream college — cobblestone paths, steep hills and all. Landre, who uses a motorized wheelchair, understood inaccessibility would be an issue at Georgetown. Still, the Hilltop felt like the right place. “I came to Georgetown because it’s arguably the best foreign service school in the U.S. — in the world — and I want to pursue foreign service,” Landre said in an interview with The Hoya. “It just seems like the best place to be.”…
Building better maps for the disability community
April 6, 2018 | Source: CNET
Occupational therapist turned disability rights activist Alanna Raffel has spent her career thinking about accessibility. So for her 30th birthday last year, she turned her passion into action. Raffel had worked with disabled clients for years in Philadelphia. It wasn’t till late 2016, however, when she became more involved in advocacy, that she learned how difficult it was to find meeting spaces that could accommodate people of varying abilities. It’s particularly challenging in an old city like Philadelphia, where many of the buildings were built more than 200 years before the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed…
Web Accessibility: The effort at Capital One Bank
April 6, 2018 | Source: SDTimes.com
Web and mobile development focuses on technological inclusiveness, such as across operating systems, browsers and devices. Yet, as organizations become even more digital over time, human accessibility still isn’t getting the attention it should because there’s a general lack of awareness about the issue and how best to address it. Capital One began its journey creating its digital accessibility team in 2010 with the goal of establishing accessibility as a fundamental part of its digital delivery and providing all customers with equal access to its website and apps….
Proposed rollback of Americans with Disabilities Act is permanently stalled
April 6, 2018 | Source: The Architect’s Newspaper
After the House voted earlier this year to pass H.R. 620, or the ADA Education and Reform Act, the proposal seems to have permanently stalled after 43 Democratic Senators have pledged to filibuster the measure. As first reported by Rewire.News, Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) has successfully wrangled the votes required to keep the Senate from bringing up H.R. 620 for a vote. As AN first reported back in February, the passage of H.R. 620 would have required written notices to be given to places of business found in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)…
This wearable device can respond to your thoughts
April 6, 2018 | Source: The Verge & ScienceDaily
MIT researchers have created a wearable device called AlterEgo that can recognize nonverbal prompts, essentially “reading your mind.” The system is made up of a device that loops around a user’s ear, follows their jawline, and attaches underneath their mouth, and a computer system. The wearable device has electrodes that pick up neuromuscular signals in your jaw and face that are triggered by internal verbalizations (aka saying words in your head) but can’t be seen by the human eye. These signals are then given to a machine learning system that analyzes the data, associating specific signals with words…

Housing Selection for the 2018-2019 academic year wrapped up last Thursday. In advance of Housing Selection, Transylvania University disclosed to students that several of the buildings available for upperclassmen were not accessible under the standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Four campus housing options offered for the 2018-19 year, and at least one academic building are largely wheelchair inaccessible. Private colleges and universities, like other public accommodations, fall under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and are subject to the ADA Standards for Accessible Design…

April 8, 2018 | Source: Boston Herald
Erich Manser of Littleton sees the world as though he’s looking through the tiny hole of a drinking straw — a progressive genetic condition that has left him nearly blind. But this year, he’ll complete the Boston Marathon with the help of a remote set of human eyes, thanks to a smartphone app that will be free in Boston April 9-17. “The Boston Marathon is unique in that it’s such a large field, and there’s a crowd of supporters and spectators. It’s a uniquely challenging race,” said Manser, 45, who holds the blind Ironman record. “In terms of a marathon setting, something like this is transformative.”…
From a wheelchair, Lowell man’s a force for accessibility
April 9, 2018 | Source: Lowell Sun
In April 2013, Dino Theodore was admitted to the Saints campus of Lowell General Hospital with a fractured hip and femur. It wasn’t the typical patient experience. As Theodore, of Lowell, who is paralyzed from the waist down and restricted to a wheelchair, began to recover, he found “despicable” problems with the facility, including bathroom doors and walkways too narrow to accommodate a wheelchair. “I could not take a shower, I could not go in to use the facilities,” he said. Theodore, who describes himself as an aggressive advocate for access, wasn’t the typical patient from the hospital’s perspective, either…

In making Yale more digitally accessible, everyone benefits
April 10, 2018 | Source: Yale News
As a molecular biophysics and biochemistry major, Yale sophomore Brennan Carman has encountered websites and online course materials that relay scientific information via graphs, diagrams, and pictures. For Carman, who is visually impaired and uses screen-reading or magnifying software, accessing that information can take double the time to get through — and often longer. It thus comes as a relief to Carman and hundreds of other Yale students and staff members that the university has made a commitment to continue its work to make university websites and web applications accessible to people with disabilities…
Does DOT’s Rule Allowing Drivers to Park in Front of Curb Ramps Violate Accessibility Laws?
April 10, 2018 | Source: Streetsblog NYC
DOT rule allowing drivers to block curb ramps at unmarked crosswalks may conflict with laws that mandate access for people with disabilities, according to a local disability rights expert. About 10 years ago, then-City Council member Vincent Gentile got the idea that unmarked crosswalks should be appropriated “to open up more parking spaces.” He introduced legislation to make it happen, but before the bill could come to a vote DOT went ahead with a rule change in 2009 that made it legal for drivers to park at T intersections…

But Maha said that for his talk at the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce April luncheon, he wanted to go beyond just his organization’s founding and sensory-friendly programs…

April 11, 2018 | Source: Generocity
When Yvonne Hughes attended an independent living program for people who are visually impaired in Baltimore, she only spent six weeks of the scheduled eight months learning with her peers. Hughes, 63, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, which is a hereditary, progressive eye disease that causes visual impairment and light sensitivity, at 26 years old. The diagnosis changed her life, she said, but never hindered her abilities…

April 12, 2018 | Source: Seyfarth Shaw
Over the past few years, we have frequently written about the proliferation of demand letters and lawsuits alleging that a business denied a usually blind or vision-impaired individual access to its goods and services because the business’ website was not accessible, in violation of Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and state laws. One firm that pursued many web accessibility actions under Title III and California’s Unruh Act (including a success in the Bags N’ Baggage case decided in plaintiff’s favor by a California state court) is now going after employers…

Last month Frank Gardner, the BBC’s security correspondent, was stuck on board a flight arriving at Heathrow for a full 100 minutes after ground staff sent his wheelchair to the baggage reclaim half a mile away. This week, following a backlash, the government promised a review, with new measures to improve air travel for disabled passengers…

Assurances that people with a disability could access all Commonwealth Games events have already hit a hurdle with reports of people in wheelchairs being directed to car parks they can’t use. South Brisbane resident Daniel Henshall arrived at the Yatala park ‘n’ ride to travel to the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.
